I’ve seen a lot of dog trainers and breeders on TikTok say “no dog will load up into a new vehicle without first being desensitized to that vehicle.” In my opinion? That’s a load of bull. All of mine (except for Hex) will load up into ANY vehicle so long as they know at least one person in the vehicle. Take Diablo this morning for example. He has NEVER been in my truck before. Why? He’s stayed with Da since Cinder was 1. So about 5 years now. I’ve had my truck for 3 and a couple months. He ran out the front door at Da’s this morning. I got a call on the way to pay court fees (on a traffic violation) and saw him as I was going down the driveway. All I did was call him over and he IMMEDIATELY loaded right up and sat shotgun on the way to court.

The other day, David came up to the house on a 24 shift with LifeNet. Cinder was loose on the yard playing with Hex. He gets out, calls her over and loads her right up into the ambulance. Mind you, she’s NEVER been on an ambulance before nor had any training around one. She didn’t hesitate for a second.

Hex won’t load up into any vehicle only because she doesn’t even like to ride in mine? Why? She doesn’t like car rides because no matter what she gets car sick 99% of the time so *negative experiences* which is completely understandable.

Which brings me to my point. Every dog is different. Every dog reacts and responds different. Don’t make broad assumptions based off your dog(s) about the general population. Just because your dog(s) won’t do it, doesn’t mean someone else’s won’t too. Train the dog in front of you.

Pics of Diablo on the way to court this morning with me. Cinder was in the backseat.

A vest doesn't make a service dog.

Service dogs are not legally required to wear identification! The training is what makes a dog a service dog.

Hundreds, and even thousands, of hours go into basic obedience, task training, and public access! THIS is what makes a dog a service dog.

Hex is being offered up for cost of spay. She will be spayed prior to placement (9/21 is spay appt). Born 8/29/2020. Female solid black GSD. Being sold without her papers as I haven’t paid for them yet so they aren’t in. She is good with dogs, cats and other animals as well as children. She is being sold as a pet due to her history with having seizures . She has been seizure free for about a year now. She has not been spayed yet so she isn’t quite ready to go but looking for a home for after. Pm for more info.

** yes she climbs ladders onto roofs so she must be watched**

Triton is being offered up. He is a 3 year old intact male solid black German shepherd. He is papered via AKC. Small rehome to ensure good home. Would prefer to sell on neuter but would he willing to sell with breeding to right home. He has HIGH ball and prey drive, started on Bitework but no titles. Started on dockdiving. He is good with other dogs, male and female, Intact and altered. He is good with cats under supervision (he plays rough). He is DM N/N, MDR1 N/N. His final hips and elbows haven’t been done yet. He throws solid, levelheaded biddable pups. He himself is very eager to please.

Pm for more information.

Service dogs come in ALL shapes and sizes.

It's no secret that labradors and golden retrievers are the breeds most likely to succeed as service dogs. However, they are FAR from the only breeds working as service dogs.

Service dogs come in every shape and size, from tiny to giant and everything in between!

A tiny dog may be able to perform medical alert, psychiatric response, and retrieval of light items (like a medication bottle).

A giant dog may be required for more stability with mobility work, and more effective tasking for certain circumstances.

Even dogs previously from shelters can make AMAZING service dogs when carefully selected and placed in the right hands.

Never dismiss a team simply because the dog is not a breed you expected to see working as a service dog!

ID: 1. Three dogs sit side by side (a great dane, a bully mix, and a chihuahua). Text reads "service dogs come in all shapes and sizes!". 2. A black and tan chihuahua sits in a red vest. Text reads "Tiny dog, big job! Service dogs come in all shapes and sizes." 3. A fawn great dane sits in a blue vest. Text reads "Giant dog, big job! Service dogs come in all shapes and sizes." 4. A brindle and white bully mix sits in a green vest. Text reads "From shelter to helper, service dogs come in all shapes and sizes."

I train a lot of Assistance Dogs and I deal with a lot of access issues. I've dealt with barriers to access for assistance dogs in many different situations and with many service providers.

This is what I found.

The greatest barrier to access for Assistance Dog Handlers is other Assistance Dog Handlers

I don't know if Assistance Dog trainers and other people who deal with advocacy and access issues have found this but there is a culture of fake shaming and handler shaming that lies at the heart of the Assistance Dog community.

It's almost a flex to see another dog behaving badly in public and rush to social media to post about it.

Part of me understands. These dogs give people independence and it's very scary to think that untrained dogs are going to take that away. However I feel that this fake shaming has gone a step too far and is removing the ability to access services from disabled people.

So I am going to share a story with you.

Once upon a time, in Wetherspoon's, Ted tried to eat a tomato off my plate

Obviously everything then turned to chaos. People jumped up and started shouting. Children were crying. People were throwing food around the restaurant. The police were called. The restaurant burnt down and I was told to leave in disgrace and never return!

None of that actually happened.

Well I say that....the people on the surrounding tables were outraged!

Outraged that I had not immediately given Ted my tomato. This was obviously completely unacceptable.

That's right the people on the surrounding tables found Ted's enjoyment of the tomato funny and endearing and demanded I hand it over to him immediately.

For the most part, for small transgressions, this is what actually happens. Most people find an assistance dog being slightly naughty to be endearing and hilarious. As a trainer of Assistance Dogs, I see their little smiles all the time.

Nevertheless you would not believe the amount of people who's anxiety levels shoot through the roof when their dog does nothing more than has a little bit of a sniff of the floor or has a little bit of a look at a screaming child or has a little bit of a cheeky peek at the salami on the shelf.

I do not condone assistance dogs being dangerously out of control in public areas. I do not condone aggressive, nervous or stressed dogs being used for public access work. I do not condone dogs helping themselves to salami and behaving in ways that put public access at risk but I also do not condone gatekeeping and policing other people's assistance dogs to the point that they become so scared of their dog doing something wrong they cannot access the services they need.

As a trainer, I assure you no dog is perfect. Not Ted, not Lyra, not yours!

So before saying anything online about another handler remember that dogs are not robots. They have bad days, handlers have bad days, the environment does bad things. Have a little bit of compassion and understanding.

Because your words may stop someone accessing services more than any incorrect assistance dog policy.

[Photo shows Lyra, a black retriever in a red assistance dog vest, lying by and looking up at my friend in the hope some bread will be shared.

Az**el is a 10 mo German Shepherd mix. (Unsure on what mix but I know mom is a GSD) he is current on rabies. He is looking for a forever home. He is medium-high energy and is still intact (he will be sent on a neuter contract unless I get him altered prior). He has a rehome fee to ensure a good home is available for him as his last owners dumped him in Lonoke. Az**el is available NOW. He is working on kennel training but is potty trained. He walks decent on a leash.

Because he is still a puppy he does get excited. He’s good with other dogs and cats. He LOVES attention. He is located in Hot Springs but can be transported outside of HS for a fee. He is microchipped.

I’m picking Az**el back up. He was rehomed to a friend (no longer friends with them). He was under contract to come back to me if he didn’t work out. They rehomed him from under me instead of returning him like the contract required. I got an email today of the “Second Attempt At Contact” (my email has been acting up so I never got the first). He’s at Lonoke Animal Shelter just past Little Rock. I talked to my landlord and he’s on board for me to bring Az**el back home. I go an pick him up Monday. He will be coming back to me for evaluation and work on training until we can place him in another home. He is a German Shepherd MIX. He will be neutered (or on a neuter contract). If you’re interested in more information please DM me. Pictures provided by Lonoke Animal Shelter. The mud pic is when they picked him up.

Az**el is Cinderella’s half brother. Same dam, different sire.

California is tightening down on fraudulent representation of Service Dogs. See AB 468 effective January 1, 2022.

Service Dogs are more than just any dog wearing a vest purchased online.

If your dog has not been specifically obedience and task trained and you do not have an ADA qualifying disability, then your dog does NOT fall under the protection of ADA law.

ESA (Emotional Support Animals) are NOT Service Dogs and fall under the guidance of the Fair Housing Act and are welcome in your home with proper documentation and authorization.

Pets are NOT Service Dogs.

Puppies are NOT Service Dogs.

Pet dogs riding in grocery carts are NOT Service Dogs.

Buying an online "certificate" that your dog is a Service Dog, does NOT make it a Service Dog.

Dogs off leash and out of the control of their owner, are NOT Service Dogs.

Representing your dog to a business as a Service Dog and LYING, is FRAUD.

Educate yourself, do it well and do it right if you need a legitimate Service Dog!

Due to unfortunate messaging over the years, coupled with a lack of knowledge, and compounded by the human tendency for denial/delusion, what should be obvious and commonly accepted is anything but.

A few of the messages:
-There are no bad dogs, only bad owners. Wrong.
-Any dog can be “fixed” if you’ll get your energy right. Wrong.
-Every dog should be saved. Wrong.

The knowledge gap:
-We have a chaotic house, with lots of kids running all over, and we adopted a highly nervous but “sweet” herding breed. Bad.
-My dog challenges everyone in our family, and has bitten us all, but is great with my trainer. Bad.
-We got a guarding/working breed so it can protect the family, even though we’ve never had a dog before. Bad.

A bit of denial:
-He only bites us when we kiss/dance/move too fast/leave the house/vacuum because he had a traumatic early life. Delusion.
-She’s guards her spot on the couch, her toys, and her food, and will bite us if we get too close, but it’s only because she never had things of her own before. Delusion.
-He always growls at or bites my husband, but I’m sure he was abused by a man before I adopted him. Delusion.

Can people improve? Absolutely. Can dogs improve? Almost always. Does that mean that all fits can be made healthy and happy, or are wise? Nope. People and dogs come in many flavors, and many of these flavors work wonderfully well together, some work with certain other flavors, and some (human and dog) don’t work well at all. It’s a sad reality, but a reality nonetheless. We should be choosing the dogs we share our lives with based on an honest and informed assessment of who we are, what our lives look like, and what dog—both breed and individual personality—fits that reality best.

Ignore the silly messages, do your homework, and lose the denial.

Fairytales in dog land often end up as nightmares.
