It is an audiobook summer! As some of you may know, I've plunged into the ACX platform. Currently I have two books in production: The Golden Doodle Handbook, by Linda Whitwam (an instructional, full-length book) and Postcards from Gliese, by Mark O. Paddock, which is a Sci-Fi adventure featuring a strong protagonist, set on the planet of Gliese. Stay tuned for some excerpts!

When a 24 cent metal screw costs you 2 days of work . . .
Turns out that the Senheiser M66 shotgun has a tiny design flaw by means of a tiny screw that secures the power module cover to the element. Apparently, without the screw, or even if it is not well tightened, it causes an electrical disconnect of some sort that has the irritating effect of a loud, low frequency hum through your entire recording . . . Thank goodness for folks who share on the internet or I'd still be looking for faulty cables, cables too close to each other, unstable surge protector, etc. Apparently, it's the little things that count 😄

Tip for projects involving multiple characters (and voices):
Each time you add a new voice to the project, select a segment that allows you immediate recall of what you did to achieve the desired character.
Create one track dedicated solely to these samples so that you can have a quick and easy reference when the character suddenly reappears after 50 pages😁

Having a good sample you can refer to can save a LOT of time and helps to make your recording more consistent😉

I just completed book for Learning Ally where I had to come up with nearly a dozen kid voices! This technique was a big time saver. Plus, I could also evaluate each of the voices to ensure they were unique and appropriate.
