Quill Myths and Facts:
- Do not trim quills. It is does not make it easier to pull out. It does not deflate the barb. It makes it harder for our team to pull them out.
-Do not soak quills. Softening the quills that are visible makes its easier to break. This means we are more likely to leave barbs or quills under the skin and will increase your pet's risk of abscess formation and buried quills.
- porcupines can not throw or shoot quills at you. You have to touch them/attack them.
- It is an emergency if they are near the eye, in the mouth, and located on the chest. Quills can puncture into the chest cavity and lungs. This can cause a life threatening situation where there is free air around the lungs, making it very hard for your pet to take a breath. This medical condition is called a pneumothorax and can require tubes in the chest and lead to life threatening infections in the chest cavity called a pyothorax.
-Don't let your dog paw at their quills. Breaking the quills can make it harder to pull out. It can also increase their risk of buried quills and long term challenges.
-Ingested quills can puncture the gastrointestinal tract and lead to life threatening illness. Do not allow your pet to paw at the quills in their mouth or bite at the ones they can reach to avoid this problem.
-Do leash walk your dogs at dawn and dusk. The porcupines are out and about. Even an innocent sniff from a dog can lead to significant quills.
-Most quill removals require sedation and can take any where from 45 minutes to 3 hours for full removal and recovery.
-Just because your dog "knows better" doesn't mean they can't change their mind! This is a 12 year old dog who has never bothered a porcupine his WHOLE LIFE but decided that he would check it off his bucket list!

Meet Mikey aka “Jack” Crackerjack , He is looking for his forever home. He is less than a year old and in a foster home learning. His foster home has two cats ( he has done well with proper introductions to them )and he has two older dog siblings (5 and 10 yrs). He Is a very energetic boy and loves his chew toys. He kennels well at night and when his foster parents are out. He has learned basic commands, sit , down, off and working on stay. He needs some work on his leash skills but that would come with time. He is a very loving boy ❤️

🐾🐾 Important Notice for Applicants:

Reba wants you to know if you do not follow the instructions on the application you fill out to adopt her, it will be automatically denied without review.

As of 7 PM on August 23, we have received 11 applications for Reba. Upon printing and reviewing a few, we’ve noticed that some are incomplete. These applications will be denied. We just don’t have the volunteers or staff to call each one who made out an incomplete application to ask for the important information needed to process the applications.

When the application asks for an address, you must provide your full address, including the town and ZIP code. Please ensure every section of the application is filled out, including information about each animal you own. Such as animals, name, age, male or female, etc.. 

Following instructions is part of the process of vetting applicants. Please follow the instructions carefully, or your application will not be processed.

We only want the best for the animals in our care. We work for them and they depend on us to find them the best homes possible so they’ll never be mistreated, go hungry, be left in a kennel for 16 hours a day, or tied out day and night for years, or left without vet care.

If you can please help. To day we opened our last case of kitten canned food. With so many mother cats and her kittens coming in daily we cannot keep in kitten canned food. If anyone can help us please do so.

We’re Breaking, and It’s Because of You. We Can Do Better—Together!

Every day, we’re left to pick up the pieces of the heartbreaking abuse and neglect. It’s tearing us apart. While some feel entitled to own pets they can’t afford or care for, it’s us who are up at night, holding and crying over the animals they abandoned and let breed over and over with no basic care. We’re the ones who stay by their side, ensuring they don’t die alone, comforting them as they take their last breath.

We’re working hard to educate and support responsible pet ownership, but we can’t do it alone. If you can’t meet the basic needs of a pet—food, flea treatment, vet care, and especially spay and neuter, which saves lives—please reconsider before taking on that responsibility. It isn’t your right to own and abuse or neglect an innocent animal. The animals pay the price when they’re neglected, and so do we.

Let’s do better, for their sake and ours.

8/23/24 🐾 UPDATE: Meet Otto
Sadly, no one has come forward to claim this beautiful cat. 😢 Today, we had to rush Otto back to the vet as he was peeing blood and not eating or drinking. He’s back with us now and needs all the healing thoughts and prayers he can get. 🙏

We’ve spent the last few days tirelessly running to the vet and caring for animals who have no one else. Your support means everything as we continue to help those in need.

This cat was found after being hit by a car on Route 1 in Amity. He was rushed to the vet and we took responsibility for his care. He suffered a dislocated hip, which has been put back in place, and he will need a month of rest to recover.

🐾🐾 New Arrival Update 🐾🐾

Last night, we welcomed a mother cat and her four kittens into our care. Unfortunately, this entire family was severely flea-infested, leading to extreme anemia. During their intake exam, we noticed that their gums and tongues, which should be pink, were alarmingly pale and almost white.

Fleas are more than just a nuisance; they can be deadly. These kittens had been suffering for a long time, with the relentless fleas draining their energy and life. Sadly, one of the kittens was so weak and lethargic that, despite our best efforts, we couldn’t save it. 😭😭We are now fighting to save the remaining three, and we’re hoping for the best.

This heartbreaking situation is a reminder of the responsibilities that come with pet ownership. If you are considering bringing an animal into your home, please ensure you can meet their basic needs, including flea prevention and veterinary care. Spaying and neutering your pets is essential—not just to control the population but to protect their health. If the cost is a concern, please think carefully before taking on the responsibility of a pet.

For those who may need assistance, there are resources available for spay and neuter.

New Arrival Alert!

Meet this adorable 9-week-old Doberman mix puppy who will soon be available for adoption! 🐾 If you’re interested in giving her a forever home, please fill out an application. Once approved, she will need to be fostered by the approved applicant before adoption.

Why fostering first? We have a policy of not adopting out unaltered pets, and she’ll need to be spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped during her foster period.

Beautiful White Pigeon Found!

This lovely white pigeon came to us today. I’m not a bird expert, so I could really use some help. Can anyone tell me if this is a pet pigeon or a wild one that can survive on its own? Trying to determine if it needs care or can be released safely. Any advice is appreciated!

I was sent information about white pigeons and doves being released at weddings and they won’t survive without humans. I add it below.

**BE AWARE OF SCAMMERS WHO CONTACT OWNER'S OF MISSING DOGS**
Every owner of a missing dog has been receiving scam texts immediately after their missing dog gets posted on Facebook. We are aware of a few of these scams:

**scammer indicates a person in your neighborhood has your dog. They give a first name and indicate they will find out the last name of the person, but they want reimbursement for money they spent on food for your dog.

**scammer indicates they are from Animal Control and have your dog but will text you a google code that you must provide to them as proof of ownership.

**scammer asks if your dog is missing. Then waits for your response. Then tries to engage you in conversation to eventually either ask for money or continue with the google code scam.

There are likely other approaches as well. DO NOT RESPOND TO THESE SCAMMERS!

IMPORTANT NOTE!!! If anyone sees her hanging around any one specific area, please put food and water out so she will stay in that area. Once she is seen in an area over and over we, will get a trap ready in case she won’t come to anyone.

This dog was just rescued - she jumped out the window- ran down the road behind York Ford…. Seen again on route one by Houlton Power sports… ran back down road and fields to houlton water supply behind yorks.
She is wearing a Pink leash she is on the small size- maybe 50lbs.
SHE IS VERY GENTLE BUT A RUNNER!!!!

DO NOT CHASE. Her name is lassie

She was rescued within the last 3hrs so she isn’t aware of where she is plus she hasn’t gotten to know her new owner yet.
