$5.00 a tote

For everyone in the Houlton and surrounding area who has been asking about delivery, you can now stop by Chadwick’s on Spring Street to pick up one of our totes.

When you stop by, you’ll also have the chance to meet Diesel, one of our alumni—a beautiful black German Shepherd who works at Chadwick’s alongside his mom and dad. He is so handsome and such a good boy.

Our Handsome Black German Shepherd is Looking for His Forever Home! 🐾. BTW We have two Black German Shepherds.😉

Spade is a stunning, 3.5-year-old black German Shepherd weighing 71 pounds. He’s newly neutered and working on his leash skills. While he’s still a little nervous in new situations, he’s already showing great progress with the help of our staff.

German Shepherds are a highly intelligent and versatile breed, originally bred for herding and guarding. They thrive in environments where they have a job to do and respond best to consistent training, structure, and positive reinforcement. Because of their loyalty and eagerness to please, they form deep bonds with their humans.

Spade is looking for an experienced owner who understands the breed’s unique needs, including plenty of mental stimulation, daily exercise, and a structured environment. He would do best in a home with someone who has the time and dedication to help him continue to build his confidence and blossom into the amazing dog we know he can be.

HOULTON, Maine (WAGM) - A local group of kids is helping animals in need in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.‘s National Day of Service.

The Boys and Girls Club of Mailseets hosted a collection drive to benefit the Houlton Humane Society. Items collected included pet food, cleaning supplies, toys, blankets, and other items. The club started collecting items at the beginning of the month, and dropped them off today at the shelter.

“We wanted to do something for the Day of Service for Martin Luther King Day and I thought it would be good to do the animal shelter just to get the kids excited about it, something they see a lot, excited about animals, so we thought that was a good idea. It’s our first one, so we’re hoping for more participation next year, but we were really excited to come here and visit the animals.” says Charity Cyr, assistant director of Boys and Girls Club.

“You guys take care of lots of animals and we really appreciate that.”

A huge thank you to the Boys & Girls Club of the Maliseets for their incredible generosity! They dropped off donations they collected to help the animals in our care. Their kindness and support mean so much to us and make a big difference in the lives of the pets at our shelter.

We are so grateful to be part of a community that cares!

It’s -6°.

If you see a cat in need, please take them in to your bathroom or garage or spare room or basement.

Them living or dying right now depends on a warm place to stay now through Thursday.

If you see a cat frozen to the ground, please don’t pull it up. Pour luke warm, NOT HOT water around them and then wrap them in a towel and crank the heat in your car and get them to the ER immediately.

If you’re feeding outdoor cats, please double up and feed them kitten food. The extra calories will help them stay warm.

If you can, please provide shelter, fresh straw NO BLANKETS. They’ll freeze to them and lower their temps faster. Straw only.

Let’s try to do our part to save as many as we can from the cold this week. I know it isn’t convenient, but it’s less than a week to save an innocent soul from a preventable death and even a garage will do to help shelter them from the wind and cold.

Note: we had a volunteer in today, she went to the post office to mail out tote bags and this is what she found out. 😞

To everyone who has asked about mailing the totes:
We deeply appreciate your interest in supporting our fundraiser! However, due to shipping costs, we cannot feasibly mail the tote bags at this time. Each tote is $5, and the cost to mail just one is $5.50—more than the cost of the tote itself.

We hope you can stop by the shelter during our hours—Tuesday through Friday, 12:00–3:30 PM—to purchase one (or two or more!).

Your understanding and continued support mean the world to us!

Tattoos on cat and dog bellies show the animal has been altered.

Let's talk about the green tattoos... 💉💚

Some of the cats that are adopted from here come with this little green line on their belly. It's a tattoo and it's proof that they have been fixed. The Maine Animal Health Alliance gives a green tattoo on the belly to every kitty that gets fixed.

After a spay scar heals it can be very difficult to tell, because most vets are so good at what they do, that when it heals it's almost impossible to tell. For instance look at this spay incision here. This incision is only a day old and look how neat and clean it is!

Even the male cats get this tattoo. (Although it is much easier to tell with males if they are already altered)

Recently we had a stray female cat come into the shelter and I shaved her belly and found that tattoo!

We think it's so cool these kitties get these tattoos while under anesthesia being spayed or neutered. It doesn't hurt them at all!

🐾A sneek peak at the progress of our new project 🐾

As we eagerly await the completion of our new building, we are thrilled to utilize it as a temporary haven for farm animals, particularly goats, who have been displaced by a recent tragedy and are in need of short term care. We are deeply grateful that the building's progress enables us to provide assistance.
We are discovering that this building will be instrumental to our mission upon its completion.

We still have a long way to get it where we want it. If anyone is in a position to help with donations so we to reach the finish line of our project called Raise The Woof it would greatly appreciated.
