Here we go! Goose, through the IDT method, embraced the idea a few weeks ago that I am not his predator and was able to work on a lunge line without feeling chased. After a few more weeks of development using the cavesson and surcingle, he has developed enough muscle, flexibility and balance, to reach the next level of collection. I don't believe in using tools that force a horse into position. It causes too many physical problems and "falsifies" collection. At anytime, he can unbend or lose his centeredness, if needed. I then request a reset/return to collection. It's critical to know when to end a session, too. Just like when a person weight lifts, it's important to quit when the horse loses form or the wrong muscling will develop. With such an increase in collection development, he is experiencing topline muscle soreness. Today was his third ride and I introduced the dressage stretch. He LOVES it! For those who don't know, it's akin to the cat pose in yoga.
