Do Our Pets Feel What We Feel? (Spoiler: YES — and Then Some)

Ever have a rough day… and your dog quietly curls up next to you? Or your cat suddenly won’t leave your side after an emotional moment?

It’s not your imagination. Our pets are little emotional detectives — they feel what we feel.

We recently saw a sweet Lab mix named Max whose owner had just experienced a major loss. She seemed okay on the outside, but Max? He was pacing, wouldn’t eat, and wouldn’t let her out of his sight. His labs were normal — his heart was just riding the same wave as hers.

Science backs this up: dogs can read facial expressions and even mirror our stress. Cats? They catch the vibe, too — they just offer support in their own mysterious way.

But here’s the best part: they also feel our joy. The tail-wagging, treat-happy, couch-cuddling, goofy walk kind of joy. They’re not just watching us live life — they’re living it with us.

So next time your pet seems “extra,” take a moment. Maybe they’re just letting you know:
“I see you. I feel you. I’m here.”

Have you ever had a moment where your pet picked up on your emotions? Share it with us — we’d love to hear your story.

This month (on April 11th) is National Pet Day! Our pets rule our lives, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. They take up the best spots on the couch, expect snacks on demand, and somehow have more pictures on our phones than we do. Drop a pic of your furry troublemaker in the comments and let’s celebrate the chaos they bring! hearthstonevet.com

Just because your furry friend is getting older, doesn't mean that it no longer needs exercise. These 6 exercises are great to get your senior dog moving without pushing them too hard.

Regular, moderate exercise can help keep blood flowing to senior dogs' muscles, get joint fluid moving, and stave off weight gain that can worsen conditions such as diabetes or arthritis. Here are some outdoor exercises for your older pooch.
