📝 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀: Oh my gosh this poor dog. What awful breeding. He can barely breathe his nostrils are so tightly closed, and on top of it he definitely has a URI and is blowing snot bubbles. He can’t hear very well as it took him quite a while to wake up from his deep sleep. I think he’s also totally blind, as he didn’t track my hands and acted surprised when I touched him with the leash like he had no idea it was coming. One of his eyes even looks like it’s bulging a little bit. He looks scared in these photos but I think he just needs to hold his head this way in order to breathe. If he was euthanized I know he would finally feel at peace, but I hope a rescue can save him and get all of his medical taken care of. He’ll be quite an undertaking but he’s a sweet boy, taking tons of treats from me and even being willing to walk on a leash even though I didn’t make him.

📝 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀:
8 year old Vesuvius has so many things working against him. He’s been on his own on the streets for a while so he’s looking rough and he’s hw+ but he’s got a great personality. He’s for sure a long shot but when you meet a great dog, you try regardless. This boy was at the front of the kennel when I came by. He has the sweetest eyes and was happy to get outside. He walked great on the leash and in the outside runs he has a nearly identical neighbor that he was really good with. He took treats so gently and gave me kisses. He’s a good boy that needs a second chance!

📝 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀:
10 year old Cricket is such a great dog that two different staff members commented that they love him! He’s a chill boy that takes treats nicely and enjoys baby talk. His little tail nub wags with any praise. His color is beautiful and he’s very gentle in the leash. This poor boy shows some wear from being on the streets and sleeping under cars to get out of the Houston heat. He needs someone to give him some tlc and let him enjoy his senior years.

📝 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀:
In my time volunteering at BARC I've met a ton of friendly dogs. Hades is up there at the tippy top of the list. Top 5 friendliest dogs ever. Mr. social butterfly was jazzed to get out of his kennel and show me his good boy sit. He leashed up easily and was trotting around the runs with a smile on his face. We temp tested him with another unaltered male and he did great. His perfectly curled tail wagging the entire time. Barc has him listed as a husky but I don't see it. Maybe a black mouth cur, but husky....nah. I think he would be the perfect family pup. He'd be a fan favorite at the kid's ballgames and a cuddlebug at night. He was super sad going back into his kennel after our time together. It about broke my heart. Im really hoping he makes it out alive tomorrow, he's a goodboy.

📝 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀:

I looveeee Remi! She’s been at BARC for almost a month, if that tells you anything! She’s only on the list for length of stay. She was very shy when she first came in (to the point staff had to carry her outside) so she has definitely came out of her shell since! She’s still got some work to do on her confidence, but she’s a very friendly girl. I always think it’s the cutest thing when 50lb+ dogs don’t realize how big they are, they’re just literal babies 🥲 She’s always quietly laying on her cot when I see her, and she greets me with a paw and wagging bushy tail in the kennel. She walks great on leash, knows “sit”, and takes treats gently. She’s met two other younger female dogs and did great - lots of curious sniffs and tail wags. She’s not jumpy and gives me mellow vibes, especially given her breed/age. That being said, she is in the sick ward and her 10 days of meds are up and she’s still snotty, so the shelter extended treatment another 5 days. I’m sure some of her personality hasn’t came out, because she’s not feeling her best. She needs out of there and into a home, so she can fully recover. Someone please offer to foster!

📝 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀:

10/12: Approaching kennel dog had a low wagging tail, as i leash her she plotted on the floor and then started army crawl into the hallway she the froze and i carry her into her kennel

10/31: Remi greets me at the kennel door with a gently wagging tail and forward ears. She lets me leash her and walks loosely to and from the potty yards. She returns to her kennel and relaxes quietly on her cot throughout the day.

🚑 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀:

10/31: 10 days of doxycycline completed today. still has cloudy discharge from nose but mild amount. still noted to be hacking in past 2 days from daily kennel record sheet. continue with doxycycline 250mg SID for additional 5 days

📝 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀: we hardly ever post dogs that aren’t on the euth list. There are just so many dogs in need and not enough time.

However, this week when I was volunteering I saw Stellaluna. This girl is beyond gorgeous. It is very evident she has been used for breeding and because of it she is very shut down at the shelter. She leashes and walked gently and let another crazy young male dog sniff and meet her with no aggression. She also met a female dog and she gave her a little rumble when she was all up in her lady bits. She is very calm so I don’t think anything would have come of it, but I wasn’t going to push it. She wouldn’t take treats and just seems really really sad. She gladly accepted some chin scratches but basically walked herself back into her kennel and continued to give me the saddest Eeyore eyes I’ve ever seen . I would love to get her out of the shelter with a good family (or rescue) early. I’m really worried about her being adopted into the wrong hands because of her looks and this sweet girl has been through enough in her life. Please help share her so we can get her outta there and onto a better life.

🆘 Adopted, returned 2 days later after being attacked by owner’s dogs, and now on the euthanasia list for TODAY Saturday, 11/2 🆘

Latto was turned in by her original owner as a euthanasia request on 10-22-24 because their other dog did not get along with her. Latto was so friendly and sweet, she became a staff favorite. Everyone at the shelter was very happy when she was adopted. Her adopter picked her up after her spay and took her home on 10-30-24.

Apparently the adopter left her alone with their other dogs, the same day she was spayed, and she was attacked; she couldn’t even defend herself because she had a surgical cone on from her spay.

📝 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀: Helppp. Latto is on for today. We all love her and she went to an adopter whose dogs totally beat her up. She’s so sore and painful but is wagging today and eating from my hand.

P: rx LRS/cerenia sid x 3, rx convenia sq, rx buprenex sq, rx gabapentin 300mg bid x 14, rx tramadol 50mg 3 bid x 7, wounds appear to not be able to be sutured, will need hydrotherapy at 10-15 minutes bid x 6-8 weeks

📝 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀:
Mama Buffy was found in the middle of a courtyard with her puppies. This girl kept her babies safe and fed until they made it to the shelter. Now she’s all by herself and landed on the euth list. She’s a sweet kissy girl that hopped up next to me on the bench to cuddle. She did great walking by the kennels and stopped to see the puppies in the cage next to hers. Ugh, it breaks my heart that her puppies are off to their forever families and this sweet mama is still here.

📝 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀:
10/27 - Greeted me with wiggly body and fast wagging tail. She had front paws on door and once I presented leash she got on all fours and started to tippy tap. I slightly opened the door and she immediately walked into my leash. She walked on a semi tight leash with wiggly body. While outside, she jumped on me and placed front paws on my chest, she remained with wiggly body and allowed me to pet. When petting her, she leaned into it and was sweet. Coming back inside, she walked loosely and went straight into her kennel.

📝 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀:
What an Angel! Salem has such a sweet personality and I just don’t believe she was a stray. This girl was definitely owned. She’s gentle, smart and even a healthy weight! She’s basically an amazing dog and only on the euth list for length of stay so she’s been good at the shelter. Her notes say all the good things “relaxed”, “walks on loose leash” and “tail wagging and soft”. She’s a sweetheart and did great on her temp test too! When I started baby talking her she was all kisses and cuddles. She’s spayed, hw- and ready for her forever family!

📝 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀:
10/27 Salem sleeps throughout the day . I am able to easily leash her up and she walks out on a loose leash. Once she is back in her kennel she remains relaxed and quiet throuhgout the day. She becomes wiggly once she see's me. Takes treats gently.

📝 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀:
Hazel is a beautiful, well mannered girl! I love her. She was my fav of the day! Of course her stunning eyes pulled me in and I had to meet her. This sweet girl was so easy to leash up and she had no issues walking by the other kennels. She is definitely interested in treats and willing to show her good girl sit in exchange. When I talked to her sweetly she was all kisses. At 3 years old she’s the perfect age where she’s calm but still young. She did great on her temp test with Cocoa. Back in the kennel she sweetly rested her head on my leg. She really is a great dog that’s looking for a human best friend.

10/29 - Hazel is very quiet in the kennel, always presenting a relax body and soft face. She walks well on a loose leash with a relax body, soft swaying tail and soft close mouth.

10/20 - Walked with a loose leash staying close to my body and rubbing against my leg as we walked, circling around me, stopping and looking up at me a few times. Passing kennel in the afternoon, tail wagging, eyes dilated and ears up.

📝 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀:

Cocoa made me sad ☹️ owner surrendered at 10 years old, and probably sooooo confused. I approached her kennel and she became vocal, until I brought the treats out. I wouldn’t have blamed her if she was unsure of interacting, but she started wagging her cute nub, and was excited to leash up and go outside. She gave Hazel a few sniffs and nub wags through the fence, but was pretty uninterested in her overall on the temp test. They both just walked together totally unphased by the others presence. Her owner left a note that she had a uti and that does appear to be the case. I left staff know she was squatting to p*e and was only dribbling a bit of urine and blood. So on top of her world being turned upside down, she can’t be feeling the best. I really hope this frosty face makes it out!

📝 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀:

Cocoa held a wagging bob tail and alert face as I babytalked to her as well as walked her to her new kennel. Throughout the day she comes to me and sits before I offer my hand for a sniff to then reward her with a treat.

🚑 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀:

10/31: geriatric, nuclear sclerosis, generalized worn teeth, apparently spayed.
- owner reported possible UTI. No lower urinary clinical signs noted - no increase in frequency or straining observed, no blood in urine noted.
- dermal skin tag like mass of left front carpus. mobile. nonulcerated.
-recommend private vet care to test for UTI with urinalysis/bloodwork to confirm. recommend FNA cytology for skin tag/mass of left front limb due to breed and high risk for neoplasia.

📝 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀:
I met Addams on accident, and I am sure glad I did. I was tasked with grabbing a friendly dog to temp test Nelson with and Addam's golden amber kind eyes instantly spoke to me. I leashed him and he calmly walked outside. Once outside he was a perfect gentleman. He calmly met Nelson and was slowly wagging his tail our entire time together. He is really really handsome with cool brown undertones in his fur. I didn't read the catchpole comment until drafting this post and honestly I am SHOCKED. He is such a kind and gentle dog; he must have been terrified. I kissed his face and petted him all over and he loved it. He nestled his head in the crook of my arm and didn't want to move. He was my favorite of the day and I hate that he is so sad. I just know he would blossom into the very best companion with time and love. I really hope he makes it out.

📝 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀:
10/26: Addams shook off after leaving his kennel and walked with a loose leash, ears to sides, tail wagging. Coming back from a run he was hesitant to enter his kennel but followed treats. Passing kennel in the afternoon, he was resting on his cot, eyes dilated, and lip licked.

10/16: Had to use catch pole on dog during work up, she began biting the leash and thrashing violently.

P: Move to Tx room and initiate treatment; Rx Doxycycline 250mg SID x 10
days

📝 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀: I ran over to meet Nelson today and woweee this guy is cute. He is 3 years old so past that crazy young dog energy and I'm here for it. We temp tested him with Addams (another unaltered Male - yeah we were living on the wild side today) and he did great. We even had him go over and meet a cat and he was definitely interested but never showed any aggression. It's clear he is still feeling a little under the weather from his URI because he hasn't touched his food, but he still did a good boy sit and nibbled on some treats. I really hope someone agrees to foster him because he would be adopted in 2 seconds outside of Texas. And he deserves a chance at the good life. Love this sweet little buddy.

📝 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀:
10/20: Nelson was quiet during am feeding and walking, when trying to leash he was laid up in his bed. Putting the leash over his head he gets up and walks out of the kennel. On the leashNelson held a loose leash, low tail and ears bent to the side. In
the run he walked right in and did his business.

10/27: Nelson walked with a loose leash, ears back and curled/wagging tail. Passing kennel in the afternoon, he stood eyes dilated, ears up, and open mouth.

🚑 Medical Notes
10/30: K9 has nasal and ocular discharge with minor cough.
START URI protocol:
Doxy 250mg SID x 10 days

10/20: S/O: liquid stool
A: ddx worms/giardia/diet/stress
P: rx panacur 15ml sid x 5, rx metronidazole 625mg bid x 5
