$5 Friday for Sweety’s HW treatment! 🪱 $500 goal!

https://www.facebook.com/share/18fdPvgsUb/?mibextid=wwXIfr

Even though we aren’t going to BARC, we have a few more dogs from there to fundraise for, and one in foster that we’re hoping to get placed with a rescue.

Sweety (now Freya) was saved from the euthanasia list in late October. At the shelter she tested HW-, but unfortunately a retest in January showed she is now HW+. ☹️ This happens sometimes, as heartworms take 6 months to fully develop. Her post didn’t get many shares or pledges, so Bark About It Rescue really needs help getting this covered. She’s already in Pennsylvania where treatment will be more expensive than it would be in Houston - approximately $700. This is on top of the $300 already spent on transport. So she unexpectedly turned into a $1000 dog. We’d love to raise $500 to offset just half her costs for them. She’ll be getting injections this month, and as you can see below she’s worth every penny, and doing great! This is her last hurdle to get through. Please donate a few bucks if you’re able, and share this post so we can hit goal! Thanks y’all for the support! ❤️

New changes at BARC:

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/12DKp6dsXAf/?mibextid=wwXIfr

We’re sure y’all have noticed we haven’t posted anything since last month. Unfortunately the shelter decided to make adjustments to their policies, and one of those included not sending the euth lists & updates to volunteers. The lists are now sent to their partners 24 hours in advance, versus the 48 we were all getting prior, making it harder to form plans by deadline. They removed access from their evaluation building, which consists of half the animals, usually the “behavioral/medical” who don’t always make it over to adoptions. Basically the underdogs, which we like to meet and promote. There are of course loopholes, such as going under a rescue group, but it’s the principle for us. And the fact we can’t transparently market a dog without all information on hand. It makes no sense, when rescues tag only based off the content we provide. We’ve been networking the euth list for years - sacrificing our free time and sanity, and to be cut out like we were is very disappointing, to say the least.

A few of our volunteers did orientation at Montgomery County Animal Shelter Texas this last weekend, and they really need more boots on the ground there. They co-kennel and have 400-500 dogs at all times, some which have been sitting for 200-300 days. They don’t have big lists, but the dogs aren’t getting walked daily, and shelter life is stressful. They need out. The community has been a breath of fresh air though. They’ve been very welcoming and volunteers work alongside the shelter for positive outcomes.

We’ve also signed up to go to Pasadena Animal Shelter. They’re having to do euth lists twice a week now, and are losing several dogs.

In fact, every shelter in Houston is full to the brim and struggling, which makes us question why volunteers would be limited in any way from assisting. It makes us sad for the dogs, and we hope these changes are reconsidered, for their sake.

In the meantime, we’ll continue to advocate for the places that give us the tools and resources to do so. Thank you all so much for your support up until now - together we’ve saved tons of lives, and we hope you stay with us as we figure things out. We all love dogs, that’s why we’re here. They need us, and we aren’t going to stop helping them. ❤️

📝 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀:
Martina is so small (under 30 pounds) that I can actually pick her up with one arm. She’s super people friendly and loves other dogs. When I approached her kennel, she was laying down but quickly got up to say hello. She was all wiggles at the door. She was very polite and didn’t jump or bark. Out in the runs she met a dog through the fence and wanted to play. She’s an excellent dog!

📝 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀:
2/11 - Friendly and wiggly. Walks well on the leash.
Martina greets me at the kennel door with a fast wagging tail and a calm demeanor. She lets me leash her and walks
2/21 - loosely to and from the potty yards. Inside the potty yards she can be seen doing her business and interacting with her
neighbors.
2/23-Martina greeted me at the front of the kennel door with a wiggly body, wagging tail and soft open mouth. Taking Martina out to the dog run, she maintain a relax body with and walked in a loose leash.

📝 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀:
Shelby is over motherhood! She was just separated from her puppies because she's growling at them. She did a great job raising them, but now she’s ready for her forever home. I met Shelby in a small kennel on the side of her puppies. I had seen her earlier and she’s been quiet and sitting at the front of her kennel. I leashed her up and we went outside for some fresh air. We walked by several other dogs, and she was very relaxed. Out in the runs she was wagging her tail sweetly while getting pets.

The puppies are such cute fluffy potatoes. The minute you open the kennel door they rescue you to try to get attention and love. Perfect little chicken nuggets! She and her three puppies are all on the euthanasia list for Friday.

💜 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀
Quiver is such a floppy young puppy. I hate to see these five month old puppies in the shelter right now. They seem to be there for way too long and just want to get out and play. Quiver would really benefit from playgroup with other puppies. He played roughly with his siblings but is very submissive to adult dogs. We introduced him to an older dog through the fence and he immediately laid down and went belly up. Walking by the kennels he wanted to make friends with every dog we passed (watch video). He’s a very happy loving puppy.

⭐️𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀:
Quiver was possessive with treats and toys, vocalizing, snapping, pawing at sibling. Passing kennel, he jumped onto the kennel door and vocalized. He was vocal towards other dogs passing his kennel. Will separate when feeding.

📝 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀:
Stephan is the cutest, saddest boy you could ever meet. He hadn’t even been at the shelter for 24 hours before he was put on the euthanasia list for an injury to the tips of his back paws. The eval kennels are so loud and this boy hasn’t adjusted yet. I opened the kennel door and little Stephan (33lbs) was sitting with his head down. I started baby talking him, and he was wagging his tail and taking treats from me. That’s when I knew he was a good boy. He was hesitant to come out of the kennel, not because of his paw pad injury but because of all the noise on the outside of the kennel from the other dogs. I sat down and coaxed him out and he walked with me. He said hello to the other dogs sweetly. Stephan is a very petite boy and looks younger than his kennel card says. He has such a small injury and it’s heartbreaking to think he’ll lose his life over it without even getting another chance.

📝 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀:
Jary is a great girl! This girl came in pregnant and was spayed here at the shelter, so she lost her babies. She’s gentle and sweet and deserves a second chance.

Coming up to the kennels Jary was quietly sitting on her bed. We had no problems leashing up and walking by the other dogs. We gave her a break from her cone and she was so happy to get some fresh air. She’s a very relaxed, easy-going girl. She just loves getting pets and attention. Her fur is gorgeous, like a white bridle. So exotic! She does a great sit. This girl is so friendly that when I try to get a photo, she wants to come over and kiss me instead, so it’s hard to capture it. Love this sweet mama!

2/17 - Dog was laying down in the kennel. Got up when I went to leash her. She was walking on a semi forward leash and went straight to potting. In the runs she was walking around sniffing. Bringing her back in she walked on a semi loose leash. Going into the kennel this time she paused and looked at me with a slight tense body. After some baby talk she went in.

Update: adopted! 🎉

🆘 Belly showing volunteer favorite on the euthanasia list Wednesday 2/26 🆘

❤️🐶 Bella -
2/12 Owner Surrender | Staffie Mix | Female | 2Y | 68lbs | HW+

💜 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀: I freaking love Bella. Any dog that shows me their belly is a heartbreaker, but Bella is a heartbreaker x10. She’s an owner surrender and definitely feeling it. She was in her kennel and as all of the dogs around her were standing at the front, barking and wagging, she was on her bed with her belly up. It was SOOOOOOO CUUUUTE!!!!! As I stepped inside she showed her belly even more and wagged her tail so hard. I got close to her and she army crawled to me, letting me leash her but taking quite a while to gain the confidence to start walking. We went outside where she was such a Velcro dog. She wouldn’t leave my side. I’d step back and try to take a pic of her and she’d plaster herself right back against my legs again. She’s such a love. She did ok on her temp test with another playful dog, offering some nervous tail wags but was often a little too scared to get close. It all seemed like insecurity and lack of confidence to me, so if she can make it out of here I could see her opening up to dogs way more. She might be one who will need some crate training just because of how much she adores people, but all of her staff notes indicate she’s been silent and perfect in her kennel. I absolutely love her!

📝 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀:

2/14 Approaching kennel, Bella was in the back of her kennel pressed to the wall. I opened the door and began to baby talk her, her tail started to slowly wag. With baby talk she slowly came forward but pancaked at the front of her kennel. I then slowly entered kennel and scooted her forward, she then stood up and began to follow me as I baby talked her. She walked well and slowly. While outside, she began to wag her tail more and kept looking up at me. I squatted down and she then came to sit closer to me. She looked at me with a soft look and began to paw at my hand. Bella was seeking affection, I then began to pet her and she leaned into me. She did really well with pets and also began to lick my face and hands. Coming back inside, she froze for a bit and then began to crawl with her body close to the ground. I had to baby talk her to her kennel. Approaching her kennel, she panacked outside so I had to scoot her in.

2/17 When I approached her kennel, Bella was laying down in her Kuranda bed. I leashed her and she walked on a loose leash with her tail tucked until we got outside. Once outside, she was walking very slowly, occasionally pancaking, but when I baby talked to her she would start walking again. She frequently walked in front of me and pressed her body against my legs. When walking back inside, she walked on a loose leash without stopping. Throughout the day, Bella was usually napping in her Kuranda bed when I walked by.

2/24 Removing adopt eval due to improved behavior. Quietly lying on her bed in the AM until it was her time to be walked, loose leash and quiet out in the runs. Walked back with loose leash as well and was lying on her bed throughout the rest of cleaning. Once I placed her rope toy in her kennel she stretched neck without getting up to grab the toy and pull it onto her bed with her.

📝 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀:

Poor Ginna was an owner surrender. Understandably, they’re always the ones who struggle most in the shelter environment. She’s in good shape, is well fed, is spayed and HW-, so she was obviously loved at some point. Now she’s scared at BARC and isn’t showing well. When I first approached her kennel, she low growled at me. I sat down next to her, reassuring her that it was okay, as I gave her a few treats. I let her get up and smell me, which she did curiously, as I started petting her. Once she realized I was okay, I got tail wags fast. I leashed her up and she immediately jumped up to hug me. ☹️ she was a total different dog once we were outside. She knows “sit”, and was so sweet and affectionate. She met a few other pups through the kennel and seemed a bit nervous, but gave them sniffs and light tail tags. When we were walking, a dog lunged at her and she cowered back. I think she’d do best with nice calm dogs who aren’t intimidating. She’s rescue only due to her behavior, which honestly surprised me, because my experience with her was good. Regardless, she’ll need a foster for a group to be able to tag. I truly think she’s acted the way she has only due to fear of her new surroundings, and that in a quiet home she’d be fine. I hope she gets a second chance after being failed once already.

📝 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀:

2/18 Approaching kennel, Gina comes to me with a wagging tail and low ears as I babytalk to her. Dog walked gently on a loose leash and would hold some eye contact as I walked her around the courtyard as well as back.

2/19 For am feeding Ginna was wiggly upon apporach I was able to enter kennel and feed her. A little later after I was walking by with another employee and she began top be forward in kennel with hackles raised and a tight closed mouth forward barking. For walking I was able ot leash her and she walked loosely to the outside runs but when I was coming back for her I went to leash her and she immediately shook it off and took off running off. She ran around the area and I had to call for help another ACT was able to use chicken to lure her back and leash her up.

2/22 When i approached Gina, she would low growl. she had dilated pupils and alert ears. she had to get worked up and i had to muzzle her, every time the Tech was getting closer to her, she would jerk away each time. after i took her for a walk and she presented a much more relaxed body, she pottied immediately when we got to the grass.

2/23 Gina greets me at the kennel door with an uncertain demeanor. She lets me leash her and walks loosely to and from the potty yards. During walking she relaxed and her demeanor changed.

Update: Gabriel was 1 of 7 euthanized 💔 We are so sorry buddy. May you run pain free forever.

🆘 Injured sweetest boy on the euthanasia list Monday 2/24 🆘

💙🐶 Gabriel- , Rescue Only
2/20 Stray | Staffie Mix | Male | 1Y | 41lbs | HW-

🎥 sweetest boy https://youtube.com/shorts/xSKu0dBdvNQ?si=HIhHjk-ui9G2E_qA

💜 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀: Gabriel was found at a bus stop where people were kicking him away. In the car he literally just laid his head down and fell asleep ☹️ I can’t imagine him struggling on the streets. All of the staff have fallen in love with him, saying he’s the best boy and that stands true. He’s goofy and so sweet. He’s a wiggle butt and LOVES treats. He is very treat motivated but he actually takes them so gently from your hand, unlike other dogs with their ribs showing like his. He kept rolling over for belly rubs and trying to give me his paw. His medical notes say that when you walk in the room he rolls on his side to show his belly 😭 Also maybe potty trained! I felt bad because he kept trying to climb in my lap to snuggle but would end up stumbling because of his leg. He gets around well on three legs! He seems young and is a very good boy, it’s sad he’s already had so much hardship. He heard a dog in the lobby who was barking and he perked his ears and seemed so curious. He is a lover boy for sure and will be so worth the save.

📝 Shelter Notes: Gabriel is the sweetest boy! He was turned into the shelter with an injured right rear leg. Despite his injury, he loves people and attention-see video. Gabriel is scheduled for x-rays on 2-23-25, there will be additional medical information at that time.

🚑𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀:

02/21/25 09:19 flops on his side exposing his belly, slow tail wags when I approached kennel. Kennel was clean overnight, no signs of f***s or urine. Food bowl is empty and water bowl was halfway full. I was able to leash him and he walked out on his own. We walked to grassy areas near admin and he immediately urinated and defecated. Walked back into HPD and he immediately when back into kennel. Placed wet food and dry food, which he ate readily. Refilled water bowl. Seems friendly.
