Here’s a picture of Mark Hollis on one of our European tours; I can’t remember where the location was, or even what country we were in. But the day this photograph was taken I recall very well. Our super efficient tour manager, Barry Mead, had booked us into a remote hotel in the mountains as a rest day between shows. There was not many other guest’s, so we pretty much had the run of the place. It had an outdoor restaurant, perched on a large wooden veranda, and served great beer. There’s not much of a story to tell about our time here, other than we had the perfect of lazy days. As a band we just ate, drank and had fun chatting among ourselves until the sun went down. Snow was on the ground but the temperature was like a mid summers day. Away from all the hustle and bustle that comes with large venue tours, it felt like a ‘stop the world I want to get off’ kind of day, with everyone relaxed, happy and on top form.
Mark was one of the funniest people you could spend this kind of downtime with. Our Essex banter would frequently result in us creasing-up with laughter. He was often the instigator of some comically surreal train of thought that both Lee Harris and myself could chip in on and expand to its logical end. Those unfamiliar with this brand of humour didn’t understand what we were banging on about half the time, which made everything even funnier. Infectiously, Mark knew how to enjoy life to the maximum, and seeing this photo again reminds me of that.
In the studio it was of course a different kettle of fish. He aimed for, and reached the very essence of sound creation in its purest form. With his guiding light and unique talent, he made us feel music like we’d never felt before.
R.I.P Mark, It’s been one year on and the world is very different without you in it, but you left us your wondrous spirit in the music, and that will be eternal.
