New year, new family! 🎉

Sam came into our rescue over the holiday because his previous owner was in a bad situation and needed to rehome his dogs. Sam’s owner searched for someone who could help but couldn’t find any so he came to the conclusion the only thing he could do was shoot the dogs on his own to avoid them having a worse outcome on the street. Our city is overwhelmed with dogs and it is hard to find help right now, so we do understand why Sams owner felt hopeless and defeated.

We had a foster for Sam so we took him in and today his fosters officially decided they’re foster failing! We are so thankful to have such a solid group of people around us who will help in these urgent situations. Sam is in great hands with the best owners and will be spending his summers on the boat with his new dad!

Congratulations and Happy New Years Sam! 🥳💛

We are thrilled to have gotten this update of Lucas living his best life! 🍂🤎😌

Lucas, to no fault of his own, didn’t always get along with other dogs, so we found it hard to place him here in Houston. The Underdog Connection stepped up and found the most loving home for him in Vermont where he is given the love & attention he deserves!

As many of you know, we unfortunately had to make the decision to essentially close intake, and we thank you all for the continued support and patience while we try to place the last dogs in our care. It hurt us deeply to have to close our doors knowing the immense need that dogs here in Houston have. But, we knew it wouldn’t be fair for our last few dogs to not have our full attention and have every penny go to the bills we owe.

So, who do we have left?

Sadly, Maxine recently passed away due to cancer and we were never successful in finding her a home 😞 So We currently have Marco, Homer, Rex and Chyna left in our care and desperately hope we can find them homes as soon so we can.

We know the holidays can be financially tough as you prepare to host, gift and give your loved ones memories they’ll cherish forever, but even $10 from 10 people adds up to $100, which gets us further than you know.

Whether you monetarily contribute to Blue River or continue to share our posts, we recognize and value every ounce and form of support we get 💙

Meet Gizmo 🖤⚡️
(One week foster needed)

Friday we received a call about a scared pup who would not leave someone’s porch. He had been in the area for days without food or water and it has been so hot, he needed help asap. A volunteer happened to be in the area and scooped him up! He was very scared and hesitant to get in the car at first but now he has completely opened up. Gizmo is a little ball of energy and so loving! He loves other dogs, running laps in the yard and he does great in his kennel at nignt!

Gizmo will be getting his vaccines and neuter this Thursday and if he is heart worm negative he will be transporting with our friends at Animal Rescue Network of New England! 🙌

‼️Transport would be leaving next Thursday so we are hoping to find a one week foster for gizmo! Please let us know if you can help 🙏

Barker: NoRex is a GEM! He has SO MUCH love to give, along with unending and unstoppable kisses. He is very people friendly. He would need to be your only pet, but don’t let that stop you from reading further.

Rex’s Past: Rex has had a hard life and no love for most of it. Adopted young from the city shelter, he was returned after 2 years because the owner did not want to pay a fine for having him on a chain in the yard at all times. Devoid of socialisation, training, and love for all but a few months of his life, Rex proves, yet again, that no one knows forgiveness and unconditional love like a dog does. He was saved from the shelter’s euthanasia list, stayed in boarding for 7 months, and finally came to us in Feb 2023. In his time with us, he has met several friends of ours and stolen everyone’s heart!

Rex’s Present: Rex knows sit and down, is doing great with “Place”. He is crate and potty trained, is very food motivated and learns quickly. He is a very happy, low-maintenance boy who enjoys some activity, as well as snoozing while we work during the day.

Rex has recently been to a 3-week board and train and has done very well. We are happy to provide a recommendation from his trainer.

Rex’s Future: Rex is ready for his own family and deserves a very loving home. He comes with lifetime training support. His trainer will help his adoptive family with tools they may need to continue to help Rex succeed.
Are you ready to give Rex a home?

Chyna said please please please someone foster me 😓

We would appreciate even a two week foster so we can have more time to figure out a long term plan for her!

From chynas current short term foster:
“She is quite as can be in the kennel. She walks in when told. Might need a little push or treats. But she is kenneled with breaks and she doesn’t make a peep, And she is potty trained. Goes everytime we step outside.”

(Cute videos posted in the comments)

We really don’t want Chyna to have to go back to boarding, she’s been doing so well with her current foster!

Please share this post so we can find a plan for this pretty girl!

$5 Friday for Chyna girl! 🩷

Chyna was rescued from BARCs euthanasia list after being turned into BARC as a euth request by her owners 🙄. They put on her papers that the reason for euth request was she was hit by a car a long time ago and they didn’t feel like taking her to the vet. Since tagging Chyna she has bounced from house to house. She has also spent the majority of her time in boarding in between those times. We really need a foster for Chyna so we can get her moving and into the perfect home!! She currently has a temporary foster who will hold onto her until next week and bring her to the vet for a limp she has.

Any donations towards chynas vet costs would be greatly appreciated because we have been struggling financially this past year 🙁

08/16/2023

Maxine originally went into the vet today for updated vaccines and a heart worm test but we ended up leaving with no vaccines and bad news 😓.

The vet believes Maxine has lymphoma and is now hospice. We knew with her age and high heart worm positive status her time was most likely limited but believed she still had a chance to find her forever home. Unfortunately, with this diagnosis we know it is extremely unlikely Maxine will be adopted so now we are hoping someone has space in their home, temporarily, for this sweet girl to live out her final days. The boarding facility she’s currently at is providing a homelike environment and keeping her spoiled and comfortable but she needs to be in a home. After her vet visit she went to McDonald’s and enjoyed a well deserved hamburger and French fries. She is currently still a very happy, hungry girl so we do not have to make any hard decisions yet.

Please keep Maxine in your thoughts and prayers, she has not had an easy life and we were hoping for a better outcome than this for her. Thank you to all who have donated to Maxine over the past year and who have shared her posts. 🙏🩷

🧸Wishlist Wednesday for Maxine!💖

It has almost been exactly one year since we rescued Maxine from BARCs euthanasia list. Despite our efforts to find her a foster or adopter she has had 0 interest. We know her age, breed and low tolerance for other dogs are most likely the reason for this but those who know Maxine know she still deserves a chance! She will be going to the vet today to get her vaccines updated and we are really hoping to hear she is no longer heartworm positive 🤞.

Maxines boarding facility could really use help with supplies for Maxine so we have made an Amazon wishlist! All items will be shipped directly to Maxine. Her food is the most important item on the list but of course she would love comfy blankets or anything else you decide to send!

$5 Friday for Lucas!

Lucas has FINALLY made it to his forever home in Vermont thanks to our friends at The Underdog Connection 🥳

Lucas was with our rescue for a very long time but unfortunately he was not in foster care. We rescued him from BARCs euthanasia list but because of his issues with other dogs we had a hard time finding a foster which resulted in him staying at a board and train facility. Now that he is gone off to his new home we need help paying off his final bills. We owe around 5k to his boarding facility which is one of the main reasons we have closed intake.

We know everyone is struggling financially right now, we appreciate anything you have to offer!

Maxine tried on her dress she bought for the Barbie the Movie premiere and it fits beautifully! The only problem is she has no one to go to the movies with 😔💔

Since Maxine was a little girl she always dreamed of playing with barbies, playing dress up and watching princess movies but instead she grew up neglected and unloved. Poor Maxine has never known what it’s like to be wanted.

Maxine is a ten year old pittie who we rescued from BARC where she was set to be euthanized. Her age, issues with other dogs and breed have made it hard for her to find a family to call her own but we are hoping to find her a solution soon. She is in boarding which also has made it hard for her to get any sort of exposure. If you know of anyone who doesn’t have other dogs and is looking for a mellow friend please show them Maxine!! 💖

Back in January we rescued Vienna, a mama dog who was chained up in a foreclosed home set to be demolished. Thankfully we were able to help Vienna and her baby boy, Chili dog, out of there and into foster homes!

After being spayed and finishing heart worm treatment, Vienna waited patiently in her foster home for the right family to come along and adopt her. Her baby boy was quickly adopted but we knew mama would take a little more time. To no surprise the PERFECT family reached out to us about meeting Vienna and after their meet, they were sold! Vienna will never be on the end of a chain again, she will never miss a meal or be abandoned again.

🥳Congratulations Vienna, you deserve it pretty girl! 💖

We have closed intake but still need major help with the pitties we committed to.

Sometimes, it sure feels almost like a punishment for having rescued a dog. There are more shares,
more pledges, more help when the dog needs out of the shelter, but once out, it’s not the same.

How is it Rex’s fault that he was adopted as a puppy and not socialized with other dogs? How is it Rex’s fault that he was left on a chain for all these years? How is it Rex’s fault that he was adopted HW- but returned HW+? How is it Rex’s fault that the shelter didn’t see the signs of how his life could be, when his owner refused HW prevention?

How is it the rescue’s fault that wanted to save Rex? How is it the rescue’s fault that spent so much money while Rex was in boarding for 7 months, getting him through HW treatment, keeping up with his medical, getting him training, fulfilling his needs. How is it the rescue’s fault that he is not dog friendly?

If it isn’t Rex’s fault, and if it isn’t the rescue’s fault, then why should either of them have to pay the price for what an irresponsible owner did to this poor baby. But they do. With the lack of funds, and no lack of needs, the rescue can’t function.

Rex is such a happy dog, who loves running and playing, that it absolutely breaks me when we have to travel and he has to go to boarding. Because he isn’t dog friendly, we don’t have much luck finding temp fosters, even though he is an angel in the kennel.

He’ll be going to boarding for a couple of weeks over the next month, and we need help covering the expenses of $700. ANY AMOUNT HELPS!

Rex has been with us, his fosters, since February. We were supposed to give him a break from boarding for 2 weeks. But he never left. He is the sweetest, kindest, goofiest boy, who’d steal your heart, if you give him a chance.

He sits and lays on command. Does pretty good with stay. And he listens well. He never wants to upset his humans and will do anything for food. This boy loves his toys more than anyone else I’ve seen.

Thank you for your continued support for all our dogs ❤️

Adopt Hank!

Known in College as ‘Hank the Tank’ or ‘Hanky Panky’, Hank is now a middle aged good boi that is ready to settle down.

Hank is a dog that knows what he wants - snuggles, sunshine naps, and short walks. Like most middle aged males, he’s a little paunchy but he’s working on it. *insert fitness montage with sweat bands* He walks with a loose leash. His short legs are good for short distance, jaunty walks. He also enjoys long naps on the couch and will let you choose what to watch on tv.

Hank’s ready to settle down. It’s ok if you have kids, he can’t have any. Hank grew up in the hood without access to a dentist so he’s got some dental issues that mean he won’t chew any furniture your house. He likes soft things. Soft toys, soft blankets, soft pets. He’s a slow eater and prefers chewy treats. He will marry you on the spot for a rotisserie chicken.

The list of good things continues! Hank is good with other dogs. He’s good solo. He won’t steal your food. He’s house trained. He doesn’t bark. He likes to play, and a little goes a long way. He doesn’t dig. He’s trustworthy alone in the house and he’s also crate trained. He won’t run off…and if he does, he doesn’t go far (to the end of his current driveway) and always comes back. He thinks it’s funny to make his foster mom go outside when she’s not fully dressed.

Don’t miss this opportunity for a once in a lifetime, certifiably good boy!

It’s $5 Friday AND Feel Good Friday all in one! Two of our pups transported recently so we wanted to share some updates 🎉

Wylla is living the good life in Florida with her and beautiful family which include some human siblings

Tilly went all the way up to Massachusetts where they had a hot pink collar and leash waiting for her. She is in a loving foster home and has a meet and greet coming up this weekend!

Both of these dogs had horrible beginnings - waiting at the shelter for weeks for Wylla, and wandering the mean streets of Houston for Tilly - but we are so happy to be a part of their new chapter.

Vetting, transporting, foster supplies, health certificates - it all adds up, so we’d really appreciate any support on this $5 Friday, in honor of Wylla & Tilly ❤️

$5 Friday for spay and neuter bills!

This month so far we have spayed/neutered, fully vaccinated, dewormed and heart worm treated over ten dogs. This costs thousands 😵‍💫. Upside of all of this is those ten babies are now ready to go to their forever homes! Including Tilly 😊

Tilly was found with her sister Penny about two weeks ago when we were driving back from dropping off another stray we found with a partner rescue. One leaves another two come! Tilly (husky) and penny (Bassett hound) were found running along a busy road. They were both flea infested, worm infested, unaltered and unfortunately penny is heart worm positive. Penny is currently in foster care and her foster might be foster failing however Tilly needs a foster!! She leaves on transport with one of our partners in two weeks so all she needs is a place for that short time!! Please let us know if you can help foster!

Adopt Princess Vienna! 👑💖

Vienna was rescued after being abandoned, found chained up in a foreclosed home that was set to be demolish with her puppies. Vienna is the sweetest loving girl! And also a hugger 😊 She’s a pretty girl with a beige coat and honey eyes! She is very well behaved, she listens and is potty trained. She is also crate trained and gives no trouble. She loves to be outside, LOVES walks, and to snuggle on the couch. She is anxious of car rides and the rain (she usually just pants and that is about it) she would love a thunder buddy!! She loves to love, and loves love!

Good with adults: Yes. She loves people!
Good with kids: unsure, she is super friendly with people so I am pretty confident she’d be good with them. She is a hugger so just watch out for hugs on the little ones!
Good with dogs: Yes, has not had any problems with my chihuahua
Good with cats: No
House trained: Yes, no accidents whatsoever!
Crate trained: Yes
Crate aggressive: No at all!
Food aggressive: No
Leash trained: Yes
Energy level: Moderate
Suitable for an apartment: Yes
Can be handled: Yes, she’s super trusting
Barker: No

💙❤️ Adopt Lucas! ❤️💙

Next month, Lucas will have been searching for his forever home for an entire YEAR. We pulled him from the euthanasia list and he has had no interest since 😔 We’re not sure why, cause just look at him! He got a break from boarding today and went on a Doggy Day Out with one of our volunteers. Here’s the report she gave!

House trained: yes! Not a single accident and always went potty as soon as he stepped outside.

Crate trained: yes! He loves to be near you if he has a choice but is quiet when left alone.

Food aggressive: No, and he takes forever to chew his bones and treats so your money will go to good use!

Leash trained: Yes, but can pull a tiny bit when excited (or when there’s a squirrel 😆)

Energy level: low to moderate. He LOVES playing with the ball outside, pouncing on it and chasing it, and gets zoomies after baths, but is otherwise snoozing at your feet or licking his chews on his bed. He is in general super low maintenance other than needing an occasional grooming.

Suitable for an apartment: Yes! His energy level is perfect and he’s quiet. He’s a bigger dog but he never jumps so it isn’t bothersome. He also prefers a dog bed over the couch, which is crazy to me but a good quality for people looking for that!

Can be handled: Yes! When we met I gave him a few treats so he knew he could trust me and then let me lift him into the car with no issue. I bathed him as soon as we got home and he even enjoyed being brushed, giving me face kisses the whole time! Throughout the day he would come to me and rest his head in my lap.

Barker: he would bark at certain noises in the backyard like a normal dog would but that’s it.

Good with adults: yes! He loves a good baby talk and scratch on the head.

Good with kids: unknown from personal experience, but did play with a 5 year old while at the shelter.

Good with dogs: He can be around other dogs on walks but would prefer to be the only pet in the household.

Good with cats: since I knew he didn’t like dogs I didn’t allow much interaction with my cats, but the small interactions they had gave me good vibes’ He was interested but would just stare at them with a soft tail and then turn around and look at me and go about his business. He would sniff their butt, give a soft tail wag and then look back at me. I think with time he could live in a household with cats.

Your favorite thing about Lucas? His puppy eyes! He can win anyone over with that look and beautiful coat. He seriously is such an easy guy that just wants to be your best friend!

Due to no foster or adopter we have been paying for Lucas to stay at a facility while he waits for a home. Any donations to help us continue to care for Lucas are appreciated!

What do you do when you pull a 10 year old off the euth list (because she’s too sweet to die) and end up with a dog who isn’t dog friendly? ☹️

Unfortunately with this senior girl, she has every odd stacked against her. She’s a pittie, she’s old, she doesn’t like other animals, and she’s leery of men at first.

Someone out there has to be willing to give this toothless girl a quiet home for whatever time she has left. She’s calm and easy. She wasn’t rescued just to sit in boarding. That is NEVER the plan. It’s expensive, and it’s not the same as a family.

If you’re interested in adopting, please contact us. If you’d like to donate a day of her boarding, we’d be so grateful. $20 a day adds up fast and she has a $300 outstanding bill.
