A much needed pawsitive pupdate on our friend Lucas 😌🍂🤎
We are thrilled to have gotten this update of Lucas living his best life! 🍂🤎😌
Lucas, to no fault of his own, didn’t always get along with other dogs, so we found it hard to place him here in Houston. The Underdog Connection stepped up and found the most loving home for him in Vermont where he is given the love & attention he deserves!
As many of you know, we unfortunately had to make the decision to essentially close intake, and we thank you all for the continued support and patience while we try to place the last dogs in our care. It hurt us deeply to have to close our doors knowing the immense need that dogs here in Houston have. But, we knew it wouldn’t be fair for our last few dogs to not have our full attention and have every penny go to the bills we owe.
So, who do we have left?
Sadly, Maxine recently passed away due to cancer and we were never successful in finding her a home 😞 So We currently have Marco, Homer, Rex and Chyna left in our care and desperately hope we can find them homes as soon so we can.
We know the holidays can be financially tough as you prepare to host, gift and give your loved ones memories they’ll cherish forever, but even $10 from 10 people adds up to $100, which gets us further than you know.
Whether you monetarily contribute to Blue River or continue to share our posts, we recognize and value every ounce and form of support we get 💙

Abandoned in an apartment by her owners and then put on the euthanasia list ☹️ We need a foster to save her life!

Reginas owners were evicted from their apartment and instead of taking their pet with them they decided to leave her behind 😡 Regina was confiscated by animal control and then placed on the euthanasia list at BARC. We’d like to think her owners leaving her behind maybe was a good thing and this can be her second chance at finding an actual loving family.

This dog was very flea infested. She has a greasy black residue on her back that smelled of motor oil. Treated with capstar today and will repeat tomorrow. She was also given advantage. She should be bathed to remove the motor oil residue

Oh I love this girl so much!! She is SO cute and has the most soulful eyes you’ll ever see. She had a clean kennel and went pee immediately once we got outside. She’s spunky and jumpy, and act like a puppy, but very easy to redirect, and she does a PERFECT sit! She even waits sooo patiently for her treat! She had fun running next to the runs with another female dog. Regina is just a sweet little girl and would love to be part of a family with a big yard to run around and play in!
Josie has left the shelter ALIVE! ✨
Josie was dumped at the shelter by her owners after 7 years, can you imagine how confusing that must be for her? Yesterday she was scheduled to be euthanized and we almost lost her 😓. A tag must be sent in by 1PM, after that any dog on the list can be euthanized at any time. We didn’t make the decision to tag Josie until 4PM because to be quite honest we are beyond full. Thankfully she was still alive, but four others lost their life yesterday. We are devastated for the four who didn’t get a chance, but glad we could at least save Josie. We can’t thank her foster enough for opening up her home and sacrificing her time to save a life with us. Fostering a dog can be a huge challenge and puts you in a vulnerable position but those who choose to do it know how rewarding it can be! We can’t wait to see Josie blossom into a confident girl, she’s going to be the perfect companion for her future adopter! 🥰

Sunny came into the shelter as a stray and was scheduled for euthanasia this Wednesday. We know almost nothing about this sweet senior, but know he deserves a soft bed and a kind touch in his Golden years 💛. We have secured a foster for Sunny but first he will be spending two nights at our vet clinic to figure out where we are medically with him!

Betty and Brett came into BARC Animal Shelter on 7/2 and were set for euthanasia today, 7/7 at 1PM.
It is sad that we are scrambling to save the lives of 3–6-month-old puppies from euthanasia. Unfortunately, BARC is required to euthanize dogs daily for many reasons and they are not the only shelter struggling. When a dog like Brett or Betty walks into the shelter, most likely they are doomed. Our streets are overpopulated with homeless pets and our local rescues, and few fosters can’t keep up. We know this is a repetitive statement, but we need more help, and we need more people to care. One person can save thousands of lives.
Sharing a post is free, fostering for a week can save a life, adopting instead of purchasing a dog helps one less dog die in the back of a shelter or on the street and can influence others to do the same. Donating $1-$5 a week helps rescues a lot too!
We are happy to say Betty and Brett will not be losing their life today but will be coming into our Blue River family. We have two wonderful fosters lined up for them and can’t wait to see these two find a home!

Betty is a 6 mo dermi pup who is super friendly. She has no fear and is Ms Social. Easy to leash and walks like a pro on the leash. Loves treats. Betty was super excited to see her more mellow brother Brett. You can definitely tell Betty rules the roost. She is HW-.

Max 🌟 the next Justin Bieber! 🎤🎶
(Max is still looking for an adopter!)
Max is a little showman with a huge personality. We know it will take a special person to want to take on a special needs dog, but Max's winning personality and huge smile will warm your heart and light up your life!
Max is an 8 year old owner surrender. Unfortunately, Max had become a lot to handle for his owner who is battling Parkinson’s disease. It wasn’t an easy decision to give up Max but his mom felt he needed more than she could provide at this time. It was a very emotional day for his family but we promised them we will help Max find a home that will love him just as much as they do.
Max had a back injury a few years ago and had surgery for it but it was unsuccessful, leaving him paralyzed. He doesn’t let those back legs slow him down though. He loves playing fetch 🎾 and to see him run free when we put him in his wheelchair is priceless! He is a very happy boy and will be the best companion for whoever has time to care for him.
