At CHAH rehab we consider each of our clients as members of our patient care team. As part of our extended family, we have some sad news to share with you.

Xena Bean Adourian, Kristina Adourian’s (CHAH Director of Rehab) beloved French bulldog who has served as one of our rehab mascots and overseer of our daily activities, has crossed the rainbow bridge.

Xena came into Kristina’s life eight years ago as a puppy who was brought into rehab for swimmers disease, meaning her legs would not hold her up. Even as a tiny little bean she showed a feistiness and desire to boss others around. Kristina taught Xena to walk by using her dedicated determination you all have seen.

The lessons Xena wanted to teach us extended beyond rehab. When she developed IMHA (immune-mediated hemolytic anemia) at six years old, her medical team at GCVS fought the critical disease with blood transfusions and expert internal medicine. Many of you know she had a relapse of her IMHA earlier this year. Thanks to the exceptional medical care she received from the entire CHAH team she again went from critical to remission.

Two weeks ago, Xena started developing small nose bleeds when playing with her favorite toys. In a very short period of time her symptoms suddenly progressed to difficulty breathing. A specialized CT scan for the head was performed by Dr. Miles at VDS which heartbreakingly showed an extremely aggressive and extensive nasal tumor. The location of the tumor was making it hard for Xena to breathe and its aggressive nature along with her history of IMHA ruled out the option of advanced therapeutics.

We said good-bye to Xena on Saturday, November 26, 2022 with love, tears and a beautiful send off. Xena was smiling, surrounded by her friends and held by her loving parents, Kristina and Tommy.

Xena has left a huge hole, but Kristina wanted to thank you all for the love that you have given her and Xena. She has felt all your compassion when you have constantly checked in on Xena to see how she was doing, especially when she wasn’t present in our rehab room. We knew you would be asking “where’s Xena?” on your next visit. Our answer is: she’s in heaven playing with all of our fur babies and friends already there.

Hugs to all of our CHAH rehab family,
Dr. Marziani

Kristina and Dr. Marziani had the pleasure this afternoon of sharing their passion with zoo veterinarians from around the country at a workshop for the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians annual conference. Special thanks to Piezowave and RockTape for loaning/donating supplies!

Here's an update on what's happening with animals in Ukraine and ways you can help.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine created a crisis in animal care, affecting the thousands of pets carried across borders, shelter animals in war zones, strays reliant on feeding programs, and zoo animals that cannot be moved without endangering them.
