"From what I understood from the vet tech at the final adoption meeting, Lucy was a kitty who had "been on the struggle bus" and then after she was so well cared for, and cleared of all kinds of parasites, and fattened up a little by her foster, she was healthy enough to be spayed and adoptable.

"Lucy is a total firecracker now! Still under three pounds, she pretty much rules the roost, and has tried (many times) to make the crotchety 17 yo resident fur boss cat (Sterling) be a pal. The dogs think she is fun and funny, and she has fit in beautifully with our whole family."

Bretagne (pronounced Brit-nee), the last surviving Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Search & Rescue Canine from 9/11, was laid to rest on June 6, 2016, in Cypress, Texas, just outside of Houston. This heroic golden retriever was a cherished member of the Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department and an invaluable partner to Texas Task Force 1.

At just 2 years old, Bretagne embarked on her first deployment to the World Trade Center site in 2001, alongside her handler and best friend, Denise Corliss. Throughout her illustrious career, Bretagne responded to numerous disasters that impacted the Gulf Coast region and beyond, including Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Ivan.
Bretagne's legacy as a Houston-area hero extends beyond her search and rescue work. After retiring at age 9, she continued to serve her community as a reading assistance dog, providing comfort to elementary school children as they practiced reading aloud. Her dedication to service and her gentle spirit made her a beloved figure in the Houston metropolitan area.

When Bretagne passed away at the age of 16, the Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department honored her with a hero's farewell. Firefighters and search and rescue workers lined the sidewalk, saluting as she entered the animal hospital for the last time. This poignant tribute underscored Bretagne's significance not only to Houston but to the entire nation as a symbol of hope and resilience in the aftermath of 9/11.
