In this Houston weather, you have to get up super early to tend to the bees. I can’t believe it but we pulled another 10 frames of honey!! This is our third harvest in the last 3 months! These bees are killing it!

This is what a perfect day of beekeeping looks like. We pulled 22 frames packed full of honey that is ready to harvest. That should bee about 90 pounds of honey!! These bees are so docile but also such hard workers (which don’t always go hand in hand). Perfection is the only word that comes to mind. If only all honey harvests were like this. 🐝

What’s my latest obsession? Weight Watchers (again). I’ve lost 16 pounds in 2 months by getting back on track with my diet. What’s the trick? Turning amazing every day recipes into Weight Watchers friendly ones so you never feel like you are making a sacrifice. Here I made a Pineapple Upside Down cake (2 points) for my sister’s birthday. And last night I made Carnitas (4 points) with a Torta de Elote (2 points). This pairs perfectly with ’ 4 point Margaritas! It was amazing. Hit me up if you want a recipe!!!

The spring tomatoes are thriving. Look at these little babies. Here we have Chef’s Choice, Golden Medal and Tomatillos. Can’t wait to bite into these juicy gems. Thank you to for growing these from seed for us. 🍅

First hive check of 2023. The Marie Antoinette queen bee has been a busy gal (can you spot her?). Had to add another super to give her space to grow. My Catherine de Medici hive, on the other hand, seems to have decided to kill the queen and lay a new one. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 🐝 🐝

Today was a very interesting day for beekeeping. As I may have mentioned in a previous post, I have a hive that had to be moved off of my property because it became aggressive. The plan was to find the queen today and kill her. Then tomorrow I was going to install a new queen to replace her. Well, when we opened up the hive, there was no queen. It looks like she died on her own. I have no idea what happened to her but she is gone. The problem is that since the hive became queenless, one of the other bees decided that she would try to take over the responsibility of being the queen. I mean, someone had to step up so you can’t blame her for trying to help. But the problem with the laying worker bees is that they can only lay drones (males). So you would think that my problem solved itself but it’s actually a much bigger problem now because if you install a queen with a laying worker, the laying worker is going to kill the new queen because she has appointed herself as the new queen even though she really isn’t. It’s impossible to find the laying worker so instead we had to install some new open brood from another hive which releases a pheromone that for some reason causes the bees to think that there’s a real queen in there that’s laying eggs. So we basically just tricked the bees so that the laying worker will stop and in two weeks I will come back and try to sneak in a new queen. It may or may not work but if we don’t put new brood in there, the entire hive will eventually die because only boys will be born and they are useless. So…. truth is that the world of beekeeping is complex but fascinating.

Remember my broody girl, Chikira? Well her dream of becoming a mother is just a couple of weeks away from coming true!! @thegardenhen gave her 5 fertilized eggs and she has been taking such good care of them. So I’m going to be a grandmother y’all! 😂
