Here are 2 out of 3 examples of ear infections that can occur.
A yeast infection is the most common type of ear infection in dogs. When the ear becomes inflamed and the canal environment changes, the yeast overgrowth and create a brown or gray, greasy ear discharge. Usually accompanied by discharge odor.
The gram negative (rods) ear infection is a special situation because gram negative bacteria tend to have unpredictable profiles. This means an ear cytology and in some cases ear cultures are needed in order to get the right antibiotics. Gram negative bacteria are especially talented at changing their sensitivity. So every time we guess wrong, gram negative bacteria become resistant to multiple additional antibiotics. These infections are also accompanied by ear discharge and odor.
