Grapevines may be a beautiful addition to your yard, but they can be toxic to your dog.

If ingested, they can cause kidney failure. But don't worry, there's a solution!

Try trimming the budding grapes before they turn into fruit to preserve the aesthetic value of the vines while keeping your furry friend safe.

As always, it's important to be aware of potential toxins and hazards to keep your pets healthy and happy.

Our furry friends have complex emotions too, and sometimes, they may exhibit signs of fear, anxiety, or stress.

😢 In addition to obvious signs like shaking or hiding, dogs may also use self-soothing motions like yawning or scratching to alleviate nervous energy. They may even exhibit displacement behaviors like sniffing or running in circles.

Other signs of an anxious or fearful dog include stiff posture, avoiding eye contact, lip licking, and a tucked or frantically wagging tail. Stay tuned for more tips on how to help your furry friend feel more at ease.

We all want our furry friends to be healthy and happy, but heartworm disease can be a major obstacle. If your dog is diagnosed with heartworm disease, it's essential to restrict their exercise.

Physical exertion can exacerbate the damage the heartworms cause to the heart and lungs. Treatment is risky, and the dog's condition must be stabilized before starting medication. Dogs with a low worm burden typically have a better prognosis. Stay vigilant and protect your pet's health!

Providing year-round heartworm prevention is an important part of your pet’s health care plan. If you would like to discuss the various preventives, contact our team at Richmond Avenue Animal Hospital by calling (832) 203-7711, so we can determine what protocol would best fit you and your pet’s lifestyle.

Tired of your dog's barking? Try using the "incompatible behavior" training method to help your furry friend learn to be quiet. The idea is to reward your dog for engaging in behaviors that are incompatible with barking, such as playing with a toy or going to their bed.

First, teach your dog the new behavior in a quiet and distraction-free environment. Make it a game and reward them generously for a correct performance. Once they have learned the behavior, start practicing it in areas where they usually bark, such as near a window or at the front door.

Gradually increase the level of difficulty by introducing distractions and cueing your dog to engage in the new behavior as soon as they get distracted. Over time, your dog will learn to associate the new behavior with being quiet, and the barking will decrease.

Remember to be patient and consistent with your training. With a little effort, you can help your dog become a well-behaved and peaceful member of your household.
