Did you know that ferrets are susceptible to heartworm disease, just like dogs and cats?
Heartworm disease is a parasitic infection carried by mosquitos. Heartworm disease cannot be transmitted to ferrets by other ferrets, dogs, or cats, as transmission requires being bit by a mosquito that is carrying heartworms. One bite by an infected mosquito can unfortunately cause an infection, heart disease, and death. No effective treatment exists for ferret heartworm disease and we strongly recommend keeping ferrets on monthly prevention year-round. Mosquitos easily make their way indoors, especially in the greater Houston area, and can still pass infection despite your ferret never going outside.
