We continue our diagnostics talk on teeth with Ora-Nasal Fistulas
These things are GROSSSSSSS but important to talk about!

An abnormal opening between the oral and nasal cavities, this is often caused by bad teeth along the upper jaw due to periodontal disease, trauma, birth defects, or oral tumors. This condition allows food, water, and other oral contents to pass into the nasal passages, leading to discomfort and various health issues. While it can occur in any breed, certain dogs, are more predisposed to this condition.
First symptoms can include inflammation, irritation, runny nose, sneezing, or nasal infection... sometimes it can lead to your pet developing pneumonia when left unaddressed.

These are addressed during an anesthetized dental cleaning. If there isn't an infection present, the doctor will flush and suture it shut to heal closed. However, if there is an infection present at the time, the hole will be left open while an antibiotic regiment is prescribed, and the hole will naturally close on its own.

Today's Topic: Mitral Valve Disease (MVD)

Certain dog breeds are significantly predisposed to heart disease, and one of these breeds is the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, which is particularly susceptible to Mitral Valve Disease (MVD). This condition can lead to heart failure due to the degeneration of the mitral valve in the heart, causing leakage that results in fluid buildup in the lungs and enlargement of the heart.

MVD often affects older dogs, with symptoms potentially appearing as early as age 5 or 6. If you own this breed, regularly monitoring their health and watching for signs, including coughing, lethargy, and difficulty breathing, is essential.

Here’s why protecting your pet against dental disease matters.

🦷Gum disease can make eating, playing and even grooming uncomfortable for your pet.

🪥If left untreated, bacteria can spread to other organs, which can cause life-threatening diseases.

🦷Proactive prevention can save your pet from unnecessary discomfort and you from expensive treatments.

February is National Pet Dental Health Awareness Month, save 30% on your pet’s next dental cleaning when you book by February 28!

Don’t wait for the warning signs--call us to book today! 💙

**We will extend the promotion into March if appointments are made before February 28th. (Due to the availability in appointments)

Today on Wild Wednesdays: Goats, we are talking about their little piggies! Now when I say little piggies, I mean hooves... don't want to cause confusion. 🐐

First things first, hoof trims are an absolute MUST for goats.

When hooves go without trimming and/or the trim is not done evenly, the compensation on the goat's joints can lead to arthritic issues. As a human, we know this isn't fun and we're not even trying to jump on people during yoga class! ... well, hopefully.

During the trim underlying issues, such as hoof ball abscesses, can reveal themselves that otherwise would have gone undetected as the hoof continued to grow.

While having access to gravel or concrete surfaces can help to prolong the amount of time in between trimmings, it is recommended they be done every 8-10 weeks.

Deep Dive into Diagnostics: Teeth - Stomatitis

Today we are talking about Stomatitis - a common, painful disease that affects cats of all breeds and ages, although it can sometimes affect dogs as well. It is most likely caused by bacteria in the mouth from tarter build up and makes the mouth angry.

First symptoms are oftentimes excessive drooling, pawing at the mouth or hesitation or complete refusal to eat their food. If you notice any of these signs, a vet's visit is in order!

Upon exam, the vet will check both the outside of the gums along with the cheeks, tongue and throat. They will be looking for red and inflamed gums and, if bad enough, even ulcers!

Depending on the severity, Stomatitis can be temporarily managed with pain meds and antibiotics, but the doctor will recommend considering a dental cleaning in the near future, if not as soon as possible.

Deep Dive into Diagnostics: Dry Eye and Tear Testing

Another day, another eyeball and this is a very common issue we want our pet owners to be aware of!

Dry Eye is a very common condition, especially in "smooshed-face" breeds of dogs. However, this condition can be congenital as well as acquired.

When the vet is suspicious of this concern, a thorough exam coupled with a Schirmer Tear Test will be performed during your visit. When being done, a paper strip is folded and hooked over the lower eyelid. Once in place, tears begin to "wick" up the filter paper. The distance that the tears wick up over a one-minute period lets the doctor know the tear production rate.

Based on these results, the doctor will create a treatment plan usually involving a combination of topical lubricants and tear stimulants. Once dry eye has been identified, it will be a condition to manage for your pet's entire life - if it goes undiagnosed or is not properly managed, secondary issues (such as ulcers) can occur.
There are a couple symptoms that can be noticed first at home but not always: red/irritated whites of the eyes, and thick/goopy discharge regularly producing in one or both eyes, and squinting/blinking are the most commonly noticed by owners.

This Month on Wild Wednesdays we are talking GOATS!

Before you decide to get a goat for your land, there are a ton of factors to consider, from healthy maintained living space, routine care and maintenance, and emergency planning - farm animals are just as dependent on our due diligence as our cats and dogs.
Prep wise, keep the following in mind:
- It is usually best to provide a minimum 1 acre for up to 6 goats. Sturdy fences are a must BUT keep in mind, with their natural curious disposition, goats are escape artists and you may find them on top of your car one morning when you're trying to get to work!
- Not all hay is good hay! Coastal hay is recommended, and supplements may be encouraged to assist with proper calcium breakdown in the system, especially in males to prevent urinary blocks
- Goats will need vaccines and f***l checks upon arriving on your property. The initial vaccines will need boosters, and then yearly updates along with rechecking the stool. There are certain parasites in Texas that are becoming immune to dewormers, so staying on top of your pet maintenance is a MUST.
- Castration is highly encouraged in males along with dehorning when they are young in order to reduce chances of aggression
-Lastly, have a plan in place to be able to transport to the vet if anything arises. While we offer farm visits for our surrounding area, sometimes we don't have the time available due to appointments but you shouldn't wait to be seen!

Deep Dive Into Diagnostics: TEETH
February is dental month in the animal world and the perfect opportunity to learn more about what all goes on with our furr-baby's chompers.
This week we are talking about Gingivitis!
Gingivitis in animals is just the same as in humans: red/inflamed gums, tarter build up, and receding gumline.
This is a normal process that happens to all pets, it has nothing to do with lack of care!
While we can slow this process down with dental treats and/or brushing the regularly brushing the teeth, a dental cleaning will be something to consider eventually.
When a pet comes in for an exam, our technicians check those teeth for any of these signs and keep track of the progression. Once the rating gets to Moderate, our vets will usually recommend a dental cleaning in the near future.
During the dental cleaning, your pet goes under full anesthesia with the doctor and our LVTs do a deep clean along with any notation of loose or missing teeth. Once they recover from their short nap, you bring them right back home that afternoon.
Wondering where your pet's teeth are rated? Call us!
Think a cleaning is a good idea? Call us and we will get you scheduled for our DISCOUNTED dental cleaning all this month!
