As show breeders, we are often asked how puppy buyers can tell if a breeder is reputable or not. There are multiple resources available to puppy buyers and that most valuable resource is going to be through contact with the AKC national breed club like the American Maltese Association.

So why buy from a show breeder? Show breeders are more concerned with the health and emotional well-being of our puppies than someone who is just breeding puppies for profit. 

How do you tell if a breeder is good one?
Do your research before inquiring about a puppy.  If you’re wanting a puppy to go on 5-mile runs with you each morning, a Maltese may not be the breed you’re looking for.

Don’t be offended when a breeder asks you several questions about yourself, your lifestyle, and your family situation. A reputable breeder is going to be more concerned with the longterm health and well-being of the puppy, not just interested in making a sale. A reputable breeder looks for a lifetime commitment but is also open to taking the puppy back if your situation ever changes.

A reputable breeder will not be more concerned with “getting their life back” by placing puppies before puppies are at least 12 weeks old. While Maltese puppies do not nurse on their mothers that long, they are still watching and learning from their mother while being socialized by the breeder and getting necessary vaccinations.

A reputable breeder will always be willing to provide references from other breeders and past puppy buyers. 

A reputable breeder will always be a resource and a lifetime mentor to their puppy buyers.

Please welcome, Quinn, to AMAR. Poor Quinn was abandoned; tied to a post at the northern end of Central Park in NYC. He ended up in the ACC shelter in Manhattan and we rescued him after his stray hold was up. The shelter shaved him down and you can see he's very skinny, but as sweet and friendly as can be. He's being fostered in NJ and is thought to be a senior. He needs to be neutered, get a dental and has some lumps on him checked out. After that he'll be available for adoption. Thank you to Laura for taking him in for us.

Please welcome Bella to AMAR. She came to us as an owner surrender from the daughter of a woman who had three strokes. She had dropped Bella and apparently, hurt by the fall, Bella became fearful and reactive to the mom. She's in very good hands now with our foster mom, Stephanie M and her family in NJ. Bella's 11-years-old and we're giving her some time to de-stress. She will be vetted (she has some allergies) and will then be up for adoption.
