🤔Is That Normal?!” 🧐👀🐴

☑️Look at your horse’s body everyday.
☑️When you groom them before you ride and when you untack them afterwards .
☑️Observe them during feeding time, scan their whole body.
☑️Check their legs, hair, face, especially the right side farthest from the side you buckle the halter.

Early detection is paramount to successful treatment and chance of returning to their previous athletic level. If you see an odd swelling or thickness, early identification and examination by your vet can increase your horse’s chance of return to work.

⭐️Knowledge is Powerful⭐️

If your horse starts displaying signs of discomfort, pain, or even just poor performance, there is POWER in knowing what the issue is! Why?! 👇

⭐️When the issue has a definitive name and diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation can begin immediately, thereby reducing layup time and most likely lessening the severity of the issue.

⭐️Fear of the unknown is real! Mysterious lamenesses, lethargy, decreased appetite can all be so vague and scary! Having a thorough exam done helps identify the problem and that almost@instantly lowers the anxiety you feel about your dear equine partner.

⭐️Monitoring: checking progress routinely throughout your horse’s recovery period is important to ensure no set backs and keep you focused on recovering without accidentally losing behind schedule.

The weather is about to drop drastically. Watch for signs of colic and prepare by making sure your horses are being fed electrolytes and have fresh water available!

Colic is not a disease, but rather a combination of signs that alert us to abdominal pain in the horse. Colic can range from mild to severe, but it should never be ignored, as many of the conditions that cause colic can become life threatening in a relatively short period of time. Only by quickly and accurately recognizing colic – and seeking qualified veterinary help – can the chance for recovery be maximized.

Virtually any horse is susceptible to colic, so management practices can play a key role in prevention. And although not every case is avoidable, the guidelines listed in the graphic can help you maximize your horse’s health and reduce the risk of colic.

As always, remember that every animal is different depending on age, breed and other health conditions, so be sure to work with your veterinarian to address any concerns specific to your situation!

Thank you Vet Tech Institute of Houston for inviting Dr. Guardia to help demonstrate the standard of digital radiography for equine patients. A very BIG thank you to Sound and Christina Lawton for donating the use of this machine for teaching purposes.
