More myth busting! If your horse is hot 🥵, let ‘em drink! 💦

Have you ever been told to not allow a hot, sweaty horse to drink cold water because it could lead to colic, founder or tie up?

This notion is actually a myth, and a dangerous one too, because it could lead to dehydration and very serious (and real) consequences. A sweaty, hardworking horse needs to be rehydrated without delay (i.e. don’t wait for the horse to cool down first).

The key, however, is to know how much water to allow at one time — because of the equine stomach’s relatively small capacity, offer small amounts of water every 20 minutes until the horse drinks his fill rather than letting the animal drink it all at once.

Remember that water is the most vital nutrient for a horse. A horse’s daily water requirements are influenced by many factors, but the average idle 1,100-pound horse in a cool environment will drink 6 to 10 gallons of water per day. That amount may easily double or triple in a hot environment! Therefore, it goes without saying that providing cool, clean water to your horses at all times is of paramount importance.

Acupuncture has helped so many of our patients with this intense summer heat. This sweet pony was really struggling the last few summers. We now perform acupuncture on him 3-4 times frequently in the end of spring, then monthly after that to keep him sweating. It helps him so much!

Acupuncture has saved Gryf’s summer! Last year he quit sweating and became highly heat intolerant. This year we began his treatments in March and he’s sweating even now. I highly recommend it!

🐴Sometimes our performance exams🕵️are very subtle, detailed, obscure, puzzling, and often frustrating. Other times, the sudden dramatic lameness is as simple as a giant rock stuck in the foot. 😏🤦🏻‍♀️🏇🏾

📣To say we have fantastic clients is an understatement! 🙏🏻👏🏻

Although we still don’t have power at our office, our amazing clients brought a generator to charge our radiograph machine so we could complete their prepurchase examination!

Another client provided a personal fan to cool Dr. G while she processed for a patient. They even hand-delivered homemade honey from the “Bee Someone” local hives🍯🐝. We are so blessed!🙏🏻

⛈️As a mobile practice, we are going to have to stay off of the roads on Monday, July 8th, due to the power Hurricane Beryl is bringing. We will be available for telemedicine consultations if needed during that time. Stay safe where you and your horses are. We should be back to regular business on Tuesday 7/9.

Make sure your horses are shielded from the high winds with eye protection, closed windows, and plenty of water, as well as electrolytes. If you have any significant damage and need a place to move your horses temporarily, we have a few safe barns who have privately reached out to our office to offer help. Let us know if and how we can help you during this storm. ⛈️
Be safe, Houston 🌀

✨Detailed Diagnosis✨

🤔 Why is imaging important?

Have you ever had an exam done on your horse and just had their hocks injected without any diagnostic blocks, radiographs, or ultrasound?
That’s very common!
Yes, you save some 💵 in the short term, but what happens if that doesn’t solve the problem? 🤔

A detailed exam followed by diagnostic imaging helps pinpoint the *exact* anatomical structure that is abnormal, and thereby gives you a *specific* plan that might ultimately be less expensive than joint injections, but is actually treating the problem instead of an assumed issue.

Is it wrong to inject joints based on clinical history and presentation? Not with appropriate case selection and clinical evaluation.

Is there a better way to approach sporthorse performance issues, especially if those injections aren’t as effective as expected? Absolutely! 🎉 Longevity is the goal and we are committed to help you obtain that.

✨Where do we travel?✨🚑🐎

Because our practice focus is sport horses 🏇🏾, we schedule far in advance. We often travel to farther locations like Austin, Waco, Dallas, and other regions of Texas if larger barns need multiple horses seen on a given day. 💁🏻‍♀️👩🏻‍⚕️Sharing is caring 😉

If you’re interested in scheduling with Dr. Guardia, but you’re not in the Houston area, contact our office to see when we can accommodate your horse’s needs. We can also book your barn with others in your area to make the trip more convenient.

🐎Earlier this spring, Dr. Guardia 👩🏻‍⚕️had the honor of sharing her amazing career with the veterinary students of Texas A&M University, College of Veterinary Medicine! Whoop! 👍🏻🙌🏻

Thanks to the American Association of Equine Practitioners, she was able to share the unique path she took to establish her practice and focus on sports medicine for equine athletes.

Thank you, and for the invitation and opportunity to help mentor the next generation of horse doctors!!
