One Day at Garden Oaks Veterinary Center

A couple of evenings ago we had a client come in with the sweetest cat that was suffering. The cat had a history of respiratory problems going back several years but was only seven years old. Two years ago, the owner had spent thousands of dollars at an emergency clinic on its respiratory issues.

The cat had not been seen by us in a year and was having a tough time breathing. It wasn’t eating or drinking much the previous few days and our staff quickly got to work trying to find out what was wrong and find a way to help the owner and her precious friend.

In our line of work, we are lucky in that we get to interact with great people and wonderful animals every single day. We can be having a tough day and one of our team can walk through with a big old lovable pit bull or a new kitten and everyone has to smile. We are in one of the most wonderful professions on the planet.

With this cat, our medical director saw it immediately and we got it on oxygen. The amount of oxygen in its blood would go up if it was breathing straight oxygen, but on room air would drop quickly. The lungs sounded wheezy as if it was breathing through a straw. With a human we can ask a lot of questions to more easily pinpoint what tests we need to run. For a veterinarian they have to be smart and intuitive and, even then, the best of them still have to run tests to determine what is going on.

With this one, minimally we needed X-rays, and we needed them to be read by a specialist stat. We needed a urinalysis and lab work, and the cat needed to eventually go to an overnight emergency clinic for oxygen support for an unknown amount of time.
Our client was not able to afford all that was needed. The costs would have easily gotten into the thousands of dollars. We can talk with a client about where the costs can start, but we also have to say that as we find things, other tests and treatment may be necessary, and the costs can go up. I have seen cases like these quickly get to five thousand dollars or more if the animal must stay in emergency for a few days.

We had to have the talk about quality of life and suffering. We had to talk about the costs of going on. First, we reached out to a resource we sometimes use to see if there was any money they could provide to assist this sweet lady. Given they had paid over four thousand a few weeks before to help another client with a dog in our care, they were not in a place to help her.

When we have that quality of life and cost talk, it is very difficult for us. We know how difficult it is for our clients and their families, because each of us has had to say goodbye to animals that were a part of our souls, a part of who we were.

Typically, in a case like this, before talking with our client, the veterinarian, medical director, practice manager, and techs will talk about what is going on and what has to be done. Part of that talk is us reassuring one another we are making a good decision and questioning if we have done all we can do.

As we stood there talking in the treatment area away from the client, everyone started having to look away and wipe their eyes. Several broke down into tears.

Once our client realized there was little that could be done for this cat she loved so much, she understood that it was time to say goodbye. She asked us for a lock of its hair and to be sure we got both colors. We took her to our private comfort room and brought in her sweet kitty so that she could hold it and say goodbye as we helped it cross over to the Rainbow Bridge.

We know that we did all we could do in that moment. We know that this poor cat would have suffered otherwise. We know that the owner was suffering with her loss. It does not change the fact that each of us went home sad. There is nothing in the day that can take that away.

So, this morning when we get to work, we are going to hug every kitty or puppy that comes through our door. We are going to love on that rescue or that snarly tomcat in a cat carrier. It is the one thing that takes the hurt away for a while. It never goes away 100%, but if you keep dropping by with Milo, Cali, Snickers, and all the others, you really are helping us to remember: we have a lot of joy to go with the hurt. Believe me, we love them as much as you do, and we really do hurt when you and your precious pets are hurting.

Please hug your pet today and tell them the team at Garden oaks loves them too!

July 4th arrives on a Thursday in 11 days. The bad news is that means people will celebrate days before and through the weekend.

One thing many people do not seem to understand is the distress that fireworks of all types cause animals. I have seen someone who rescues dogs lose dogs that were calm every day of the week up until the fireworks went off and they literally did everything in their power to escape. They just needed to be away from the noise and they run themselves to a point of not knowing how to get back.

Your fun with fireworks is something you should consider giving up given the massive distress you put animals in with that. Think about the animals that are older and have health conditions and what that additional stress causes them. Please reconsider and find another way to celebrate.

For those with animals you are worried about, talk with your vet this week about medicines, thunder jackets, white noise, and pheromones. Use any and all methods to help them. It is an extremely stressful time for them.

Let's do all we can to protect them and let's start with giving up fireworks.

Dear Residents and Clients from Garden Oaks, Oak Forest, West Oaks, and the Heights,

I have been involved in animal welfare, rescue, and advocacy for over 20 years. In late 2020 Dr. C and I (with the help of a lot of friends) took on the city to save a dog from BARC killing it and the dog won. I don't give out praise easily, but you deserve a ton of praise.

I was talking with a client on Thursday who had rescued a dog from a bad situation and had spent his own money to help the dog. It got me to thinking about what I have seen at Garden Oaks Veterinary Clinic over the last 4 years.

I never cease to be amazed when one of you walks in with a found animal and says, "I found this dog or cat and I can't find the owner and it doesn't have a chip. Can you get us in today; I will pay for everything, but I want to make sure he/she is OK." Some of you I could name over and over again because you never fail to care for that animal you just saw.

We try to help and we contact all of our rescue friends who do so much for so many. We cannot always find them another home, but you just won't give up taking care of them. I am truly honored to have all of you in our lives. I know that Dr. C is looking down and smiling. He knew he picked the best place on earth to put his clinic.

Thank You All and Know the Animals Love YOU!

Dear Clients and Pets,

Unfortunately, on the ninth anniversary of the opening of Garden Oaks Veterinary Clinic, we will be closed as the city continues to grapple with power outages citywide.
Please keep your pets close and know that we will open at the first flicker of power that can be sustained.
The Team at Garden Oaks Veterinary Clinic

Dear Clients and Pets,
We are closed today, Friday the 17th due to the power outage Houston wide. We will keep you appraised for tomorrow, but are hopeful we will get power some time today.

We apologize for any inconvenience.

Dear Clients, Pets, and Friends,

We are happily announcing that we will be moving over into our completed Phase 1 buildout on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday April 5, 6, and 7th. Unfortunately, we will not be able to be open on Friday and Saturday as there is a lot to move and our computers and phones will all go down for a while during the move.

We will reopen on Monday, April 8th and look forward to some of you to be the first to be seen in the new side. Please note the door you come into now will no longer be the entrance. Come to the next door down and that will be the entrance to the temporary reception and waiting area.

J.A. Greene Construction Services, LLC will begin the razing of our current clinic the day we open in the Phase 1 side. That construction will hopefully be finished by late July and we will then move a bit more to set up the clinic fully according to the new plans.

There is so much yet to do, but I know we are all grateful to you, our clients and pets for all you have done for us. We will schedule a grand reopening for sometime in late August or early September. We will be unveiling something truly special then.

I know that Dr. Chmaitelli is somewhere smiling on all of us.

The GOVC Difference

Established May 2015, our mission at Garden Oaks Veterinary Clinic is to provide relationship-centered, compassionate care to our clients and high-quality medicine and diagnostics for all patients. Through open communication and education, we hope to partner with you for your pet’s health and redefine the experience of “going to the vet”.

From the moment you walk in our hospital, we want you and your pet to feel at ease, which is why we have designed our facility to be as serene and calming as possible. We take great pride in ensuring that our hospital never smells “like a vet’s office”, and we operate on an appointment basis in order to minimize any wait time.

During your visit, you will be escorted to a private room by our medical team who will meet with you and listen to your pet’s history and symptoms before the doctor comes in. Should we need to collect any samples for your pet’s visit, we might take them to our treatment area briefly. But since providing transparency is one of our greatest priorities, we have designed windows on every door so you may watch if needed.

When it’s time for your pet’s exam, the doctor will greet you both and take a moment to get to know your pet. The doctor will then perform a complete nose-to-tail physical examination. Even if your pet is here for a routine wellness visit, our doctors still provide the same thorough exam, which includes listening to the heart and lungs, palpating the abdomen, checking joint mobility, and everything in between. Since pets can’t tell us what’s wrong, performing a high-quality physical is often times the only way to detect abnormalities early before they advance.
