July 4th arrives on a Thursday in 11 days. The bad news is that means people will celebrate days before and through the weekend.
One thing many people do not seem to understand is the distress that fireworks of all types cause animals. I have seen someone who rescues dogs lose dogs that were calm every day of the week up until the fireworks went off and they literally did everything in their power to escape. They just needed to be away from the noise and they run themselves to a point of not knowing how to get back.
Your fun with fireworks is something you should consider giving up given the massive distress you put animals in with that. Think about the animals that are older and have health conditions and what that additional stress causes them. Please reconsider and find another way to celebrate.
For those with animals you are worried about, talk with your vet this week about medicines, thunder jackets, white noise, and pheromones. Use any and all methods to help them. It is an extremely stressful time for them.
Let's do all we can to protect them and let's start with giving up fireworks.

Dear Residents and Clients from Garden Oaks, Oak Forest, West Oaks, and the Heights,
I have been involved in animal welfare, rescue, and advocacy for over 20 years. In late 2020 Dr. C and I (with the help of a lot of friends) took on the city to save a dog from BARC killing it and the dog won. I don't give out praise easily, but you deserve a ton of praise.
I was talking with a client on Thursday who had rescued a dog from a bad situation and had spent his own money to help the dog. It got me to thinking about what I have seen at Garden Oaks Veterinary Clinic over the last 4 years.
I never cease to be amazed when one of you walks in with a found animal and says, "I found this dog or cat and I can't find the owner and it doesn't have a chip. Can you get us in today; I will pay for everything, but I want to make sure he/she is OK." Some of you I could name over and over again because you never fail to care for that animal you just saw.
We try to help and we contact all of our rescue friends who do so much for so many. We cannot always find them another home, but you just won't give up taking care of them. I am truly honored to have all of you in our lives. I know that Dr. C is looking down and smiling. He knew he picked the best place on earth to put his clinic.
Thank You All and Know the Animals Love YOU!

Dear Clients and Pets,
Unfortunately, on the ninth anniversary of the opening of Garden Oaks Veterinary Clinic, we will be closed as the city continues to grapple with power outages citywide.
Please keep your pets close and know that we will open at the first flicker of power that can be sustained.
The Team at Garden Oaks Veterinary Clinic

Dear Clients, Pets, and Friends,
We are happily announcing that we will be moving over into our completed Phase 1 buildout on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday April 5, 6, and 7th. Unfortunately, we will not be able to be open on Friday and Saturday as there is a lot to move and our computers and phones will all go down for a while during the move.
We will reopen on Monday, April 8th and look forward to some of you to be the first to be seen in the new side. Please note the door you come into now will no longer be the entrance. Come to the next door down and that will be the entrance to the temporary reception and waiting area.
J.A. Greene Construction Services, LLC will begin the razing of our current clinic the day we open in the Phase 1 side. That construction will hopefully be finished by late July and we will then move a bit more to set up the clinic fully according to the new plans.
There is so much yet to do, but I know we are all grateful to you, our clients and pets for all you have done for us. We will schedule a grand reopening for sometime in late August or early September. We will be unveiling something truly special then.
I know that Dr. Chmaitelli is somewhere smiling on all of us.

On September 30th we announced New Things Coming Soon!!...
The week before Thanksgiving we began pre-expansion and tore out the ceiling and floors next door. Last week on Monday, November 27th, we started cutting the slab next door to began our expansion officially! This Monday, they started laying pipe for the new plumbing layout for the other side. We are officially in Phase One of our expansion from 2350 sq. ft. to 5500 sq. ft.
Around March 7th we will move to the other side and the current side will undergo demolition and rebuild.
On June 12th, we are scheduled to move into the full clinic!!
Once full expansion is finished we will have 8 exam rooms, 2 surgical suites, 2 dental suites, CT scanner, and Ultrasound. We will be fully staffed with 5 to 6 veterinarians.
Our clinic (NOW Center!!) will have three entrances. The one everyone comes into now will be for cats only! It will open onto a feline friendly facility with feline waiting area, 2 feline exam rooms, a feline treatment area, and a feline ward! We will be fully feline friendly!
The middle door will be for dogs AND... possibly some other animals! There will be 6 exam rooms on the 'dog' side and it will be where our doctors and techs work from (accept for our feline techs).
We are already adding staff to have them fully prepared for the expansion. You will notice we have new staff at the front and that we have more Licensed Veterinary Technicians (LVT's) on staff.
"Dr.C" is looking down smiling on this team and what he created. We are looking up all the way and smiling back!!
We look forward to inviting all of you to the open house!!!!!
Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year to all!

Today our founder and friend would have been 46 years old. We decided to celebrate his life once more. The whole team was here and we had Tres Leches with fruit which was truly one of his favorites. Though we were a little somber, there was still some laughter about some of his "ways." The love we have for him at Garden Oaks will not wane as years go by. Every time we see an animal saved or made to feel even a little better, we will see Stephen (Dr."C"). Our hearts ache but we all know we are better for having known him. Happy Birthday Stephen!
Hope you are partying with all the animals on the Rainbow Bridge!

This is the hardest thing I will write for a long time. On Sunday morning, without warning, Dr. Stephen Chmaitelli, DVM passed away. He was our rock. He was one of only two people I call best friend. He was a truly brilliant veterinarian who could think outside the box and use his intuition as only the most highly skilled can do.
He treated his team like family. Literally every 2 months we have a night or day out with the whole team which he pays for. Last Friday night we were all out at Top Golf and it was true camaraderie. I think that is why we save so many and have so many clients and so many who want to become clients when they hear about us.
He was there when there was an animal in need like Morgan Webre's dog Koda that the city wanted to kill. (All of his care was pro bono). He recently took on a dog that KPRC2 Lisa Hernandez brought us that another vet wanted to euthanize. That dog has been in our care 14 days as of yesterday and is almost 100% healthy again. He found the real underlying cause and treated it. Amazing.
I am impressed by the Veterinary and A&M Community at all who have called to help. I will name them later.
We will go on and we will expand on his legacy of caring for every patient like they are our own pets. We still have great vets and they will go on treating our patients as we bring in other vets as well.
We want to continue the expansion into the new facility he designed and we are building.
PLEASE in lieu of bringing us flowers make a donation to his favorite charity, Friends For Life Animal Shelter in his name. That will truly honor him.
I will miss you Stephen, We loved you so.

Canine Influenza Outbreak in Southeastern U.S.
Via the Florida Veterinary Medical Association, we are hearing of an outbreak of the H3N2 canine influenza. Currently it appears to be limited to the more eastern portions of Florida from Volusia County down to Palm Beach.
Some think it originated from a dog show in Georgia, and some of those dogs then were shown at a show in Florida. The virus can spread quickly because it is an airborne (respiratory) virus and dogs coming into contact with a diseased dog or with people who have recently been around an infected dog can contract the disease. Humans cannot contract this flu from their pets.
There is no immediate outbreak in Houston, but those going to the World Series of Dog Shows at NRG Center, July 21 to 25 need to be careful when returning home to their pets. If you are showing a dog(s) there, it would be wise to be proactive and have your dog vaccinated now before attending.
Dogs’ symptoms can range from:
• Coughing
• Sneezing
• Nasal or Ocular discharge
• Fever
• Lethargy
• Respiratory Distress
There is no reason to be alarmed at this time but do keep your eyes open and if you think you your dog has a likelihood of exposure, get the vaccine as soon as possible.

April is heartworm awareness month!
How much do you know about this blood-borne parasitic worm?
What you see in this video, (sorry it’s blurry), is microfilariae magnified 10x. In their early larval stage, these immature heartworms circulate through the blood stream making their way to the heart until they mature into adult heartworms. Due to their size, about the width of a single red blood cell, they’re able to travel throughout the bloodstream causing sclerosis of capillary beds in organs such as lungs, liver, and kidneys!
Make sure to follow us to learn more! We will go over what causes them, their life cycles, treatment options and most important...PREVENTION of heartworms!❤️
As the winter storm slowly comes to an end we will be resuming our normal business hours beginning tomorrow, Thursday February 18th. As roads clear up and people begin driving again...please remember that animals, such as cats and squirrels, tend to climb up next to car engines for warmth during cold weather. When turning your car on, honk the horn to make sure any animals that may have crawled up have a chance get out before you drive. We hope everyone is staying safe and as warm as possible!
02/16/2021
We would like to apologize in advance for any inconveniences as we try to make the safest decisions for both clients and staff during the winter storm power and water outages. We have decided to adjust our hours of operation for tomorrow ( Wednesday, Feb. 17th) from noon-6pm. Due to limited staff availability we have also made the hard decision to cancel all surgeries for the remainder of the week, cancel technician appointments that are scheduled for nail trims and a**l gland expressions. Technician appointments that will be allowed include those for patients needing blood work for medication refills, puppy vaccinations, and suture removals. We will hold appointments and openings for urgent and sick patients only. We appreciate you’re understanding during these trying times and hope everyone is staying safe and warm!!
02/16/2021
Due to inclement weather we will be opening at noon today! We hope everyone is staying safe and warm!❄️

Well, while I can get around in this stuff, I am told Houston is not very used to it. So to keep all their pets and clients safe, Garden Oaks Vet Clinic has decided to be closed tomorrow, Monday.
All deposits are safe as no one could plan for this kind of thing. Our team will be calling you to reschedule as soon as possible. If you should encounter any type of emergency please call Vergi Clinic, (713) 932-9589, or Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists, (713) 693-1111.
Please stay safe and warm and keep your pets safe at home and in a warm sheltered area.

COLD WEATHER IS HERE TO STAY
Over the next few days the temperature is going to continue to drop. We are also expecting snow and rain/sleet on Monday with a high of 30 degrees and a low of 17.
Please do not think that this is something animals are used to, they are not. Especially if they have been living here for a while, their bodies have adjusted to the warmer climate just like ours do. So, the cold can kill them.
Make sure that you bring your pets indoors and that they are in an area where they can stay warm. If you must keep them outside one thing that can help is to cover their crate or house with blankets and a tarp if the area is not covered. Then have a light that shines on the blankets/tarp but not close enough that it can cause a fire.
The closer to your house they are, the warmer they will be, also be sure to keep check that their water does not freeze as a dehydrated pet has a greater chance of injury or death from cold than one that is hydrated.
Remember that space heaters are very dangerous in that they can cause fires and can cause carbon monoxide to build up and kill your pet. Especially during these super cold times, indoors is best for them, just like for you!
This is Mercedes before she was adopted. She knows how to stay warm on the sofa!

Koda, the dog that Dr. Chmaitelli and the GOVC team took in from BARC after he lost his leg there came in for a visit today. He was looking so good and was so happy to see the stick he found with Doug!
You can tell from the pics he is getting better! Hard to believe it has been 5 weeks since we saw him. Dr. C wasn't in so Koda's mom, Morgan Webre made an appointment for Koda for next weekend for his checkup with Dr.C! Koda we love you!

Established May 2015, our mission at Garden Oaks Veterinary Clinic is to provide relationship-centered, compassionate care to our clients and high-quality medicine and diagnostics for all patients. Through open communication and education, we hope to partner with you for your pet’s health and redefine the experience of “going to the vet”.
From the moment you walk in our hospital, we want you and your pet to feel at ease, which is why we have designed our facility to be as serene and calming as possible. We take great pride in ensuring that our hospital never smells “like a vet’s office”, and we operate on an appointment basis in order to minimize any wait time.
During your visit, you will be escorted to a private room by our medical team who will meet with you and listen to your pet’s history and symptoms before the doctor comes in. Should we need to collect any samples for your pet’s visit, we might take them to our treatment area briefly. But since providing transparency is one of our greatest priorities, we have designed windows on every door so you may watch if needed.
When it’s time for your pet’s exam, the doctor will greet you both and take a moment to get to know your pet. The doctor will then perform a complete nose-to-tail physical examination. Even if your pet is here for a routine wellness visit, our doctors still provide the same thorough exam, which includes listening to the heart and lungs, palpating the abdomen, checking joint mobility, and everything in between. Since pets can’t tell us what’s wrong, performing a high-quality physical is often times the only way to detect abnormalities early before they advance.
Should your pet need any diagnostics or treatment, we are able to provide a wide range of in-house services to help get your pet feeling better as soon as possible--including blood work, urinalysis, cytologies, digital radiographs, ultrasounds and more. Our veterinarians bring over 20 years of collective experience to our team, and they work collaboratively to develop successful treatment plans that ensure your pet will receive the same medical care regardless of which doctor you are scheduled to see.
We also encourage our clients to use the time during your visit to ask the veterinarian any questions or discuss any concerns that are troubling you. Our goal is that you leave your visit feeling informed, at-ease, and confident in your pet’s care with us. Once a doctor-patient relationship has been established, we are always a short phone call or email away if you have additional questions after your visit, and our team will be sure to respond promptly.
An important part of our distinction here at GOVC is that we are accredited with the American Animal Hospital Association. This prestigious recognition signifies that we have been evaluated on approximately 900 rigorous veterinary standards outlined by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) to ensure that we provide the highest quality of patient care and client service. This status is only earned by 12% of veterinary hospitals across the United States and Canada, and it gives you the reassurance that we mean what we say.
You are always welcome to speak with our team to learn more about us or stop by for a brief tour of our hospital. We look forward to building a relationship with you and your pet, and we hope to see you soon!
