Does this sound familiar? You fill your dog’s bowl only to be met with a curious sniff and a side-eye. You’re not alone! Many dog parents share this experience with us.

Feeding time is just as important as what’s in your dog’s bowl. Knowing when your dog wants to eat and identifying its feeding window can unlock health benefits.

At its core, a feeding window respects your dog’s natural circadian rhythm. Dogs are carnivores and in the wild, they would catch prey, eat, and fast until their next hunt. Unlimited grazing? That’s for goats, not dogs!

For most healthy-weight dogs, Dr. Karen Becker and Rodney Habib, recommend an 8-hour eating window with a 16-hour fasting window. Make sure, however, that the final meal is at least two hours before bedtime.

For example:
Serve the first meal at 8:00 a.m.
Complete last meal no later than 4:00 p.m.

At our house, Beau and Lucy picked their feeding window. They eat their first meal early - between 4:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. - and their second meal later in the morning - between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. This is the schedule they want.

A feeding window:

🐾 Allows the GI/digestive system to rest
🐾 Enhances metabolic flexibility
🐾 Minimizes tossing out uneaten food
🐾 Respects your dog’s natural rhythms
🐾 Aids “picky” eaters

Recently, a client took my advice and discovered her picky eater wasn’t picky at all. Her pup simply prefers one meal a day around 4:00 p.m. Waiting for her dog’s natural hunger cues solved the problem!

There are numerous health benefits to understanding and honoring your dog’s circadian rhythm that are detailed in The Forever Dog by Dr. Karen Becker and Rodney Habib. Their book is an eye-opening resource for any dog parent!
