🎁 December is National Safe Toys & Gifts Month!

Our pets love presents just as much as we do, but not all toys are created equal. Before you wrap up that squeaky surprise, make sure it’s safe, sturdy, and size-appropriate.

🐶 ✔ Choose durable toys without small parts
🐱 ✔ Look for pet-safe materials
🦜 ✔ Skip anything that can easily be swallowed
🐾 ✔ Always supervise playtime

Safe toys = joyful (and safe!) play.

❓ True or False: A head tilt in your pet always means an ear infection.

👉 Answer: False!
Ear infections can cause a head tilt, but they aren’t the only reason. Neurological conditions such as vestibular disease can lead to the same signs and may require specialized care.

If your pet is tilting their head, it might not be just a cute quirk. It’s their way of showing that something may be wrong. A veterinary exam is the best way to find out what’s going on and get them the right care.

At GCVS, our board-certified neurologists are here to help find answers and provide compassionate, expert treatment.

Concerned about your pet? Talk to your primary veterinarian about a referral to GCVS Houston Neurology.

One of the first pets seen at NASA Parkway was Bex. Bex is an adorable 1.5-year-old female German Shepherd mix who decided to get into the Houston restaurant scene. The only problem… her meal of choice happened to be a gallon of granular ant bait containing an insecticide called bifenthrin.

Within 12 hours of ingesting this poison, Bex began experiencing significant muscle tremors and an unsteady gait. Because of this, she was presented to GCVS at NASA Parkway, where she spent the next three days in the hospital under the watchful eye of Drs. Evanow, Whittington, and Manino.

The doctors at NASA Parkway initially performed a procedure to remove the poison from her stomach and administered medication to help with her tremors. Despite these measures, Bex’s condition worsened to the point of developing seizures and an elevated body temperature (hyperthermia), putting her at risk of irreversible brain damage.

Thinking quickly, her team of caretakers began an infusion of a special medication called intravenous lipid emulsion (ILE) to help bind and remove the toxins from her blood. Forty-eight hours later, Bex was back to her normal self—giving kisses and eating more appropriate food. It was a rough journey, but thanks to the innovative care provided by the entire staff at GCVS NASA Parkway, we are happy to proclaim… mission accomplished!

⚠️Warning for Pet Owners: Bifenthrin & Pyrethroid Exposure⚠️

Bifenthrin is a pyrethroid insecticide found in many everyday products, including ant bait, yard treatments, and some flea collars. While these products work well against insects, they can be harmful to pets—especially cats and small dogs.

Pets exposed to bifenthrin or similar compounds may show signs such as vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, muscle tremors, or difficulty walking. Severe cases can lead to seizures and dangerously high body temperatures. If you notice any of these symptoms, seek veterinary care immediately.

Treatment may include inducing vomiting, giving activated charcoal to bind the toxin, and medications to control tremors or seizures. In serious situations, pets may need intravenous lipid emulsion (ILE) therapy to help remove toxins from the bloodstream.

Pyrethrin- and permethrin-based flea and tick products should never be used on cats and should only be used on dogs under veterinary guidance. When unsure, always check with your veterinarian before using any over-the-counter parasite product.
