Happy 5th Birthday to Houston Creatures Great and Small!

It’s hard to believe that 5 years ago I left the corporate job I had for 13 years to start my own business. 50% of small businesses don’t survive past the five year mark! This business anniversary is a landmark year not only because it’s been five years, but also because we survived a pandemic.

In five years I have cared for nearly 200 animals! Those 200 furiends range from giant 152 lb. dog, tiny puppies, hatching a butterfly for a customer’s kid, mice, cats, senior pets, rabbits, and a bird.

During the last five years I’ve also had to say goodbye to 30 furiends who have crossed the rainbow bridge. They often come to mind when I drive past their home or something we did together comes to mind. Never forgotten.

For the second year in a row I’ve had the opportunity to volunteer in two kindergarten classes at Travis Elementary during their reptile section. My ~40 year old turtle Leo and I visit for a couple of hours, and teach the kids about turtle power! Leo is named after a ninja turtle and the kids love his visits. They ask really great questions and it’s lots of fun!

In the last five years, I’ve expanded my skills caring for my senior pet friends by adding the administration of subcutaneous fluids, insulin injections, and intramuscular injections. I also have experience doing post operative care for dogs with IVDD.

We added a new family member this year! Daisy is a maltipoo and new bestie to my dog Brigid. Daisy jumped in as a full pet sitting dog from day one. She loves joining me and Brigid on pet sitting jobs and has many dog friends.

Thank you to my family, friends, and customers for helping me reach the five year mark. It hasn’t been without out struggle or sacrifice, but I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished with your support!

Temperatures will be dropping today and you must protect your pets from harsh weather. A reminder that the Safe Outdoor Dogs Act that went into effect earlier this year bans the use of chain-tethers and requires pet owners to provide outdoor pets with adequate shelter that offers protection from inclement weather.

BARC's Animal Enforcement Team will have extra enforcement officers working during the cold weather days to respond to calls and collaborate with the Harris County Animal Cruelty Task Force to make sure our four-legged friends are protected from the freezing weather. If you see a pet that is being left unattended in dangerous conditions for an extended period, please report it to Harris County Animal Cruelty Taskforce at 832-927-PAWS.

“You’ve got to be there for the long haul, no matter how long it is,” he said. “That’s the responsibility you take on — and it’s 1000% worth it.”

Gino, a 22-year-old rescue dog, helped convince the man who adopted him as a college student that pets are a commitment for life.

I regret having to tell you this at the last moment, but the Almost Home Cat Haven is behind on rent and next month's rent is due in a few days. We don't have enough to pay it. Please let me explain.

As a non-profit organization that is a strictly no-kill rescue, our expenses have ballooned since COVID, and now inflation. From food to vet care to utilities, we are on the brink of closing our doors if we do not get caught up. Will you pitch-in $30, $50, $70 or $100 or more to our emergency rent fund right now?
Paypal @ https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/almosthomecathaven
or
Zelle @ 713-775-8553

Unlike many other shelters -- both public and private -- we do not put down our rescued cats when they can't be adopted or have survivable illnesses or deformities. But each cat who we save adds an average of almost $100 to our costs -- each month. As inflation increases, this will only go higher.

For example, you can see Luna in the photo below. She was born at the rescue when someone dropped off a pregnant feral cat. Her brother, Larry, got adopted within nine months. But Luna developed an infection in her eyes, not uncommon with feral pregnancies. Although she is not blind, she has scar tissue over her eyes that gives her a ghostly appearance. Because she may not be the prettiest cat to some people, she's been with us for three-and-a-half years. But Luna LOVES to sit in laps and be loved on. Her furever home may be at the rescue. And that's okay, as long as we have the financial support of cat lovers like you.

Will you make sure we can get our rent up-to-date with an immediate financial contribution of $30, $50, $70 or $100 or more?

It's because of cat-lovers like you that we are able to protect cats like Luna. Will you make sure she always has a home by donating right now?

For our kittens and cats,
Deena Urich

It’s with heavy hearts that we inform you our beloved Swatch passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday morning at 15½ years old. He was a star who lived a long life full of love, happiness, and plenty of pets. You couldn’t find a sweeter, more patient, or more popular boy. We will miss him with all our hearts.

WATCH AND WAIT: Baby squirrel season is just around the corner! If you find a baby squirrel that isn't injured, place it into a box with a soft cloth and place the box at the base of a tree for the mother to retrieve. Watch for ants on the ground near the baby that may get into the box. If the squirrel does not pick it up within the next two to three hours, bring the baby to the Wildlife Center at 7007 Old Katy Road.
