The weather outside may be frightful, but inside the greenhouses, everything seems to be faring well. As many of you know, our greenhouses are quite lightweight, and more designed for passive cooling than for retention of heat, but we have buttoned them up and muddling through the cold nights. We will lose a lot of the field grown produce in our soil hoop houses, but, with some luck, it seems like we may escape the winter storm with our hydroponic systems intact and our hydroponic plants happy and healthy.

For our FarmBox customers, we hope to be back in action for deliveries tomorrow, so thanks for your patience!

With the mercury dropping precipitously this coming week, we expect to take a lot of damage to the stuff we grow outside of our greenhouses (like the gorgeous, lacy dill you see pictured here). Little known fact that running an urban farm acquaints you with: that beautiful broccoli head you see isn’t just one thing—it’s actually a cluster of tiny flower buds! Each “floret” is an unopened flower, ready to bloom if left on the plant. The tight, green clusters you recognize are the plant’s effort to create seeds, and when they start to flower, you’ll see gorgeous white blossoms.

So whether it’s our classic broccoli or the delicate flowering kind, you’re actually eating the plant at a very special stage of growth…and we’ll have both this weekend, so come by the market and see it for yourself!

The delicate white and yellow flowers are totally edible—and they taste amazing! Add them to your salads, stir-fries, or simply enjoy them as a snack.

would like to take moment to shout out these three lovely individuals, who have been helping out so much at the farm this fall: Van, Hussein, and Hamida. They were introduced to us by the inspiring folks at , (specifically the dynamic , who is PIF’s Farmer Education Manager) and are working with us for a six month internship program.

They all hail from Burma (Myanmar) and, though we are meant to be the instructors in this whole arrangement, have taught us a great deal about the world and brightened up the farm for the last number of weeks. We’d like to give our thanks to for running a fantastic organization…please give them whatever support you can, as that support results directly in folks like Van, Hussein, and Hamida being able to spend time exchanging experiences with us .

This will be the last weekend before Thanksgiving, so come on out to any of the following farmers markets this weekend and stock up for the annual fall festival of turkey and starch (and VEGETABLES)!
