Chances Dog Rescue and Relocation

Chances Dog Rescue and Relocation A non-profit 501c3 dedicated to rescuing Houston's neglected dogs and relocating them North to find welcoming homes and loving families.

Upon moving to the Houston area in late 2016, we were overwhelmed by the number of homeless dogs in the area. When we investigated the local shelters, we became even more horrified to learn of the incredibly high euthanasia rates. It was unlike anything we had ever seen while living in Massachusetts where there is virtually no stray pet problem, and people wait in line hours for the opportunity to

adopt a dog from a local shelter. We reached out to the Massachusetts shelters we had adopted from over the years, and asked for their partnership as a receiving group for Houston dogs. These shelters have long received transports of pups from the South, and have incredible success in quickly finding them loving, forever homes. Pre-adoption, the shelters also spay or neuter and microchip each dog to ensure unwanted litters and lost dogs are not an issue. After learning that the rescue community in Houston is primarily comprised of small, grass-roots groups each doing what they can to save as many dogs as they can afford to, we decided to offer to partner with them, pool out resources and pups, and coordinate cost-effective, large transports North. The reception both in Houston and Massachusetts has been positive, collaborative and exciting. We hope you’ll consider joining our effort by making a donation to help cover the cost of vet care, transport and pre-euthanasia shelter rescue. 100% of your donation will go directly to the dog(s), and you’ll receive updates on exactly how your money was used. Of course, since we are a non-profit 501(c)3, your donation is also 100% tax deductible.

Dogs are so deeply good and loving (and at times hilarious). Our lives are so much better because of them. ❤️

It has been at little over six years of rescue and transport here at Chances. We have helped over 4600 dogs leave Texas and find their forever families. It is time for us to switch gears though. Transport has become increasingly difficult and problematic over the past year plus, despite having hardworking and committing receiving partners up north. Adoptions are down, and for the first time in memory, there has been a marked increase in local (New England) adoption returns. We simply can't help dogs transport in a financially responsible way right now. In response, starting in 2024, we are shifting our mission to providing vet care (emergency, spay/neuter, vaccines, etc) to owned and homeless dogs in the Houston area. This will be directly overseen by the incomparable Caren Chellgren, DVM, and supported by our devoted Board members. Should the current climate of adoption saturation in the north change, we will be more than ready to swing back into action and begin transporting again. In the meantime, please know how grateful we have been for your support over the years, and how hopeful we are that you will continue to support our shifted focus. Rescue on!

This sweet girl is in Massachusetts and could use a foster for a week or two until we can find a long term plan for her. We NEVER want to bring dogs back to Texas, but her adopter can no longer keep her due to very significant health problems.
