“My dog and I have moved around a lot, had seen at least 4 different vets. Since she was a puppy she always had sort of a scabby/ inflamed patch on her belly that she regularly licked. Each vet I saw related it to her licking and fungal issue and prescribed a topical treatment, which did help with the redness. I stopped thinking much about it over the years and just used the topical ointment when it got very red. However, when we moved to Elmhurst I took her to go see Dr. Jennifer Draca for a teeth cleaning. Within 12 seconds of a physical assessment, she figured out the actual issue with my dog’s red belly patch. It was a left-over stitch from when the rescue fixed her. This stitch was causing her so much discomfort for 8 years. She removed it during the teeth cleaning and per my request saved the cursed stitch for me in a tube. I am so grateful.” — Gabrielle V. from Thrive Pet Healthcare in Elmhurst, IL

“My elderly cat had a dental with Dr. Nyquist and the care that she received was really excellent. They were conscious of her other health issues and I felt so much better about her undergoing anesthesia with how knowledgeable and caring they were. Both Drs. Nyquist and Lesley the technician were great with communication and I appreciated the time they took to be thorough. Great care overall and I will be bringing my other ancient cat in for a dental with them as well.” — Audry H. from Heart of Texas Veterinary Specialty Center, a Thrive Pet Healthcare Partner in Round Rock, TX

“It’s been a rough journey for Luca with her blepharitis. Over the months, I’ve visited every board-certified eye specialist in NYC, working tirelessly to treat her autoimmune blepharitis. We tried antibiotics, steroids, a biopsy, culture swabs, and every test they suggested. Despite spending thousands of dollars, I still felt hopeless and lost with her ongoing treatment.

Finding Dr. Wong for a second opinion was the silver lining in this challenging process. I finally feel relieved and confident in her treatment plan. Dr. Wong was incredibly knowledgeable and compassionate. She listened attentively to Luca’s treatment history and thoughtfully suggested the best next steps for her. She took the time to patiently explain the reasoning behind her approach, ensuring I fully understood.

I’m so grateful to have found Dr. Wong. Her staff are also incredibly kind and welcoming. I highly, highly recommend her to anyone seeking expert care.” — Jiwon N. from Eye Care for Animals, a Thrive Pet Healthcare Partner in New York, NY

“From day one, this facility gave me a great sense of caring for the creatures (and humans) that walk through the door. Attention to detail, technique, examination protocol, "patient" intake & registration—I have not seen better! I love my turtles enough to travel from Brooklyn to Manhattan because I know we will receive the care needed at The Center. The staff (Doctors, Boarding Residents, Reception staff) are ALL on point. Don't go any place else—this is the place!” — Donald A. from Center for Exotic and Avian Medicine, a Thrive Pet Healthcare Partner in New York, NY

“My dog was attacked on a Sunday, so my normal vet was closed. I wanted to get her checked out ASAP. They were open. The waiting room and exam room were spotless. The receptionist moved us to an exam room quickly, so we had a comfortable place to wait to see the tech and vet. I expected that we would need a bit of a wait since it is an emergency room and there were other cars in the parking lot. All the staff was caring, supportive of my concern about my dog, they handled that I was shaken very well. They were very clear setting expectations for wait times since, like I said, it's an emergency room and they have other pets to attend to. My dog was treated, we were sent home with clear care instructions and meds. I have been to emergency vets before and I was expecting a high bill, but it was about half of what I was expecting. Everyone was caring, friendly, and communicated very clearly.” — Allison F. from Pet Specialists of Austin, a Thrive Pet Healthcare Partner

“I have never LOVED a veterinary clinic before. My words are going to fail me as I try to tell you how awesome this team is. But I’m going to try my best.
In the last two weeks, I’ve had 3 separate issues with my two working dogs. Hometown Veterinary Hospital has provided us with top-notch care in every circumstance.
One of my girls needed an MRI ASAP and the veterinarian on her case got us up to Kansas City by Friday instead of Monday. So much effort went into that!
Then my other girl began vomiting to the point of becoming lethargic. They got me in ASAP and explored all the possibilities for what was wrong with her.
If you want a veterinary practice that goes the extra mile to make sure your dogs get the medical care they need, this is the best place to go.
Lily, Dr. Hilton, and Dr. Mease are the folks I particularly interacted with and I could hug every one of them. I love them all so much. They helped me walk through the scary medical issues I had with my girls. They kept me informed and made sure we had the care we needed.
Thank you, Hometown Vet! You are the best!” —

Kidney (or renal) disease is very common in dogs and cats, and it may be reversible or permanent based on underlying causes. The disease could be a result of age-related changes to the kidneys, acute injury or toxin ingestion, congenital defects present from birth, or in rare cases, a side effect of some medications. To prevent kidney disease or slow its progression, it's vital to stay regular with wellness visits so that together, we can monitor renal levels with blood work and urinalysis and catch any changes ASAP.

06/25/2024

Warning:️ this post is about p**p! 💩 If you’ve ever wondered why you’re asked to bring in a f***l sample as part of your pet’s annual wellness exam, the answer is to check for intestinal parasites.

There are a variety of parasites that thrive inside of otherwise healthy pets, so having them routinely tested is essential to their well-being. Your pet's p**p will be checked for evidence of hookworms, roundworms, giardia, and more. 🔬
These parasites can not only make pets uncomfortable and irritable but can also lead to many more serious issues if left untreated. Several parasites can even be transmitted to people, so by having your pet’s f***s examined, you are protecting humans in your household, too!

To learn more about what intestinal parasites we test for in f***l exams, visit:

06/17/2024

Check your pet for ticks every day, especially after they spend time outdoors. Run your fingers through your pet's fur with gentle pressure to feel for any small bumps. If you find a tick, it’s important to act quickly and safely. You can either try to remove the tick yourself or take your dog to your nearest pet urgent care or an emergency pet hospital for help.

If you choose to remove the tick from your dog, follow the steps below:

1) Use tweezers (or a tick remover instrument like a Tick Key) to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible, removing the whole head and body.
2) Pull the tick straight out with slow and steady pressure. (If the head of the tick is left in the skin, it can cause an infection and still transmit disease, so make sure the whole body is removed!)
3) Once the tick is removed, you can place it in a sealed container in case your vet wants to test it for diseases.
4) Clean the area of your dog’s skin with soap and water then apply a pet-safe antiseptic.
5) Contact us for advice on next steps. We may ask you to bring the tick in for testing.

Many of the diseases that parasites cause can spread from your pet to you and your family, too. Pests like and can crawl or hitch a ride into your home on shoes, clothing, or even on the fur of another pet. Itchy yet? Let’s talk pests:

🕷️ Ticks 🕷️
Not only are ticks a threat to our pets, but an estimated 476K Americans are diagnosed with Lyme disease each year.* They aren’t just a warm weather issue, either: contrary to popular belief, ticks don’t die in the winter and do not hibernate, either. If you or your pet spend time in grassy or wooded areas, get in the habit of spot-checking yourself and them for these small, spider-like creatures after every outing. If you find one, pull it off carefully and intact, then call us.

🐜 Fleas 🐜
These teeny-tiny jumping parasites aren’t just annoying for the itchy rashes they cause in pets and people. Studies have shown that the plague is once again on the rise and that fleas are one of the culprits. Fleas can multiply and jump from host to host alarmingly fast, so if you catch your pet itching more than usual, have them checked for fleas ASAP.

that ONE bite from an infected mosquito is all it takes to transmit to your dog or cat? Scary, but true. Mosquitoes thrive all over the US, and not just during summer: different breeds are active throughout the year. 🦟

Treating disease caused by parasites in dogs can be complex and costly, and options are limited for cats. But there is good news: oral, injectable, or topical preventive medications are effective ways to protect your pet and are much more affordable than treatment itself, but *only* if your pet receives the recommended dose on a monthly or yearly basis. We can help find the right preventative for your pet based on their lifestyle and health needs, so don’t delay: book a visit today!

Our pets can’t tell us when they’re experiencing pain and discomfort, so ensuring they’re checked routinely from nose to tail can help them live longer, fuller lives. 💚 This includes diagnostic testing, which is needed ahead of dental cleanings and can be done as part of their annual wellness exam. Testing healthy pets’ blood and urine also provides baseline values to compare to as they age, while f***l testing helps detect intestinal parasites that live and thrive in your pet's gastrointestinal tract. Like with regular testing, a baseline allows us to detect changes and illness before ever seeing outward signs of disease. 🔬
