Dr. Edward B. Evans, was not only the first black veterinarian licensed in Texas but also a pioneering educator and the grandfather of Councilmember Carolyn Evans-Shabazz. After becoming the first black veterinarian in Texas, he dedicated his life to education and community service, serving in various capacities at Prairie View A&M University, including as its first President. His impact on veterinary science, education, and the African American community is profound and far-reaching, laying the groundwork for future generations to follow in his footsteps, including staff at BARC Animal Shelter & Adoptions who are PVAMU alumni. We are honored to partner with Houstonโs District D to highlight the work of Dr. Edward B. Evans during Black History Month. #BlackHistoryMonth

Fosters needed! Annually, BARC takes in more than 15,000 animals. We need fosters or adopters to help us get these animals out of the shelter and into loving foster or forever homes. The pets in the most need can be found on our Urgent Pets webpage which is updated every hour and available to be viewed 24/7.
If you can't foster for BARC, we strongly encourage you to look into fostering with one of our partners like, Rescued Pets Movement, who help us place hundreds of pets each month with rescues up north.

Teamwork makes the dream work! ๐ค A big big THANK YOU to the city of Houston for spreading the word, and to all of our adopters in July that helped a shelter animal in need!
Shelters are at a critical point in time with record number of animals and adoptions and rescue statistics in decline. Through all of August, BARC is partnering with NBC and Telemundo Houston for Clear The Shelters and offering $20 adoption fees for all pets! Select PURRFURRED pets are also available for $5.
Houston, help us keep this momentum going and adopt a shelter pet today! Visit BARC's adoption center located at 3300 Carr St. Houston TX, 77026, from 12pm - 5pm, or go to houstonbarc.com to learn more.
Be prepared this hurricane season by putting together a pet go bag for your furry friend! Overlooking pets during a disaster can result in them being lost, injured, or worse. If a family is going to evacuate, the familyโs pets should probably be evacuated, too. Your pet's go-bag can include items like:
โข Pet medications
โข First aid kit
โข Strong leashes and collar/harness
โข Carriers to transport pets safely
โข Current photos of pets (in case pets get lost)
โข Pet food
โข Potable water
โข Bowls
โข Litter/pan
โข Muzzle
โข Can opener
โข Toys
