With temperatures soaring and a heat advisory in effect for Houston over the next few days, it's essential to prioritize the safety and well-being of our furry friends. Here are some hot weather tips from BARC to keep your pets cool and comfortable during this heatwave:

🚰 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗛𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱: Ensure your pets always have access to clean, cool water. Multiple water sources throughout your home can help keep them hydrated all day. A pet fountain can also help keep water fresh and enticing.

🏠 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗔𝗱𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿: Shield your pets from the extreme heat by bringing them indoors during the hottest parts of the day. If it’s too hot for you, it’s definitely too hot for them! Remember, City Ordinance requires proper outdoor shelter to protect pets from extreme temperatures.

🐕 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁: Plan walks and exercise sessions during cooler times, such as early mornings or late evenings, to avoid injuries from hot pavement.

🚗 𝗡𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗣𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝘀: Even with windows cracked, temperatures inside a parked car can skyrocket within minutes. Always take your pets with you or leave them at home where it’s safe and cool.

🚨 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗣𝗲𝘁 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝗶𝗱: Know the signs of heat distress and heat stroke in pets. Quick intervention can be lifesaving.

If you see animals suffering due to the extreme heat, report it immediately to the Harris County Animal Cruelty Taskforce at 832-927-PAWS. Remember, in Texas, it’s illegal to leave pets outdoors in extreme weather conditions, including excessive heat. Let’s keep our pets safe and comfortable this summer! 🐶❤️

BARC had a total of 93 adoptions during Petco Love MEGA Adoption weekend at the George R. Brown convention center and in shelter this year! We are so grateful to the Houston community that showed up to help shelter pets find their forever home this weekend! All pets went home sterilized, chipped and vaccinated, setting adopters up for success!

📣 Shout out to all the shelter staff, volunteers and sponsors that made this wonderful event possible. It takes a village, but together we can make a difference!

We’re thrilled to share that more than 60 dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens have found loving families during the MEGA Adoption Event so far! 🎉 It’s been an incredible two days with and we’re so grateful to everyone who’s opened their hearts and homes to these wonderful pets.
