As temperatures drop in Houston, BARC is teaming up with Houston PetSet to help pet owners provide safe and warm shelter for their dogs during this cold weather. Responsible pet ownership includes making sure your furry friends are protected from the elements according to city ordinance, and we’re here to help!

📍 Where: 3200 Carr St. (BARC Wellness Center entrance)
🕒 When: Today at 3 PM, while supplies last

What You Need to Know:
• FREE dog houses and straw for City of Houston residents
• Limit one dog house per vehicle
• No pets need to be present at pick-up
• Please bring a vehicle large enough to transport the dog house home at the time of pick-up
• No reservations or later pick-ups can be accommodated

This is a first-come, first-served event, so arrive early to ensure your pet has the shelter they need to stay safe and warm.

Houston is under a severe weather and freeze warning. We’re urging everyone to complete all winter weather preparations today. During warnings like these, it’s crucial to protect the Four P’s: People, Pets, Pipes, and Plants.

Winter Pet Safety Tips
✔️ Bring Pets Indoors: If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them. Ensure they have a dry, warm shelter to stay safe.
✔️ Paw Check: Ice can harm your pet’s paw pads. Be sure to wipe down their paws, legs, and belly when they come inside.
✔️ Look Out for Outdoor Cats: Community cats may seek warmth under car hoods. Tap the hood of your car before starting the engine.
✔️ Avoid Chemical Hazards: Clean up antifreeze spills immediately—it’s highly toxic to pets. Contact your vet if you suspect ingestion of something harmful.

Meet Scoot A1954415, the kitty who proves that nothing can hold you back! 💕
Scoot may be a special needs kitty, but he’s 𝘦𝘹𝘵𝘳𝘢 special in every way. As a kitten, Scoot became paralyzed and now scoots around by dragging his hind end. This doesn’t slow him down for a second. Scoot is playful, mischievous, and always the life of the party. 🎉

Because of his paralysis, Scoot needs a little extra care. He can’t control his bowels or bladder, so his bladder and bowels need to be expressed 2–3 times a day, and he wears the cutest little diapers when exploring the house. 🩷 He’s a champ at sleeping peacefully in his kennel during the day, keeping himself entertained with his favorite toys.

Scoot currently shares a home with cats and dogs, but he’ll need slow introductions to his future furry siblings. If you’re ready to open your heart and home to this incredible kitty, Please email us at [email protected] so we can connect you with his foster mom.

Meet Penelope (A1980727), an 8-year-old Staffy mix who’s not just a dog but a true family gem. She’s an absolute sweetheart with kids of all ages—even toddlers—and has a knack for bringing calm, gentle energy to any home. Paired with her love for other dogs, Penelope is the ultimate companion for families.
 
In her foster home, she’s taken on the roles of snack connoisseur, sous chef, and occasional beauty assistant, all while staying house-trained, crate-trained, and fluent in commands. This holiday season, the magic of giving was alive and well in the Oak Forest community! Thanks to the incredible efforts of two devoted animal lovers and the generous support of their neighbors, the fourth annual Winter Wonderland Supply Drive brought in a sleigh full of supplies for our shelter pets! 🐾

From dog and cat food to toys, treats, cleaning supplies, yoga mats, and enrichment items, your kindness is helping us care for countless animals in need. Although the holidays have passed, the spirit of generosity lives on. We are so grateful to everyone who made this season brighter for the pets at BARC! 🐶🐱✨

Update: Butter 💛

Butter's new family recently came to BARC after saying goodbye to their beloved Shepherd mix of 10 years. Though their hearts were heavy, they knew they were ready to open their home and hearts to another rescue pup—and Butter was the perfect match.

"He's so sweet and cuddly and just what we needed. The kids are over the moon for him, and he fits right in with our big family and our other dog!"

: Meet West! 🐾 West (A1962994) is a 2-year-old American Staffordshire mix who has come a long way from his rough beginnings. He was found outside an abandoned mall, where he had been living for several days, but thanks to his incredible foster family, his life has turned around.

West is an energetic and playful pup who loves chasing his tail, lounging by the pool, and splashing in the water from a garden hose. He’s also highly food-motivated—especially when chicken is involved! In fact, he’s even jumped into a pool for a piece of chicken.

Right now, West is enrolled in a multi-week professional training program led by retired K9 police officers. His training focuses on helping him feel more comfortable with strangers, other dogs, and new situations. His trainers are teaching him essential commands and helping him become the best version of himself.

West is looking for a committed, disciplined adopter who will continue his training and provide him with the structure he thrives on. While he’s still working on some socialization skills, West is a loving and affectionate dog who has plenty of love to give to the right home.

✔️ House-trained (he’s never had a #2 accident indoors!)
✔️ Affectionate and playful

This holiday season, we were touched by an incredible act of kindness. A young animal lover (whose name we, unfortunately, didn’t catch!) raised $200 by making friendship bracelets and chose to use every penny to brighten the holidays for our shelter pups. With her donation, she bought brand-new toys and spent time sharing them with our dogs. 🐾

Great with dogs and kids, she’s currently the Chief Snack Officer in her foster home, moonlighting as a sous chef and occasional makeup artist. House-trained, crate-trained, and fluent in commands, Penelope is a chill adult with the occasional burst of Lightning McQueen energy. A snack enthusiast (spaghetti squash excluded), Penelope is a lady of leisure looking for a forever home with a well-stocked pantry. Dr. Edward B. Evans, was not only the first black veterinarian licensed in Texas but also a pioneering educator and the grandfather of Councilmember Carolyn Evans-Shabazz. After becoming the first black veterinarian in Texas, he dedicated his life to education and community service, serving in various capacities at Prairie View A&M University, including as its first President. His impact on veterinary science, education, and the African American community is profound and far-reaching, laying the groundwork for future generations to follow in his footsteps, including staff at BARC Animal Shelter & Adoptions who are PVAMU alumni. We are honored to partner with Houston’s District D to highlight the work of Dr. Edward B. Evans during Black History Month. #BlackHistoryMonth
