Heat Wave Pet Safety Tips ☀️
With extreme heat comes extra responsibility. Here's how to help all your animals stay cool, hydrated, and safe:
For Dogs🐶
Always offer fresh, cool (not ice-cold) water
Caution: Avoid giving large amounts of ice water immediately after intense activity. This can shock their system or cause stomach upset. Offer cool water instead and let them drink slowly. Ice chips or small cubes are okay in moderation.
Avoid midday walks as hot pavement can burn paws. Walk early morning or after sundown and do the 5-second paw test on the ground.
Cooling treats like frozen broth cubes, sliced cucumbers, or dog-safe popsicles.
Keep dogs inside with fans or AC. Cooling mats, damp towels, or frozen water bottles wrapped in cloth are great, too.
Never leave them in the car even with the windows cracked, temps can spike dangerously fast.
For Cats🐱
Cats often hide in hot places like sheds or under decks. Make sure they’re cool and safe inside.
Try ice cubes in their bowl, offer wet food, or use a pet water fountain to entice more drinking.
Cats love cool tile floors. Offer frozen water bottles wrapped in towels in their favorite nap areas.
For Small Animals (rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, etc.)🐹
Place frozen water bottles near (not touching) their enclosure to cool the air.
Use fans near cages but not blowing directly on them.
If they're housed outside, move them inside during heat waves.
Offer safe fruits like cucumber or small pieces of watermelon (no seeds!).
For Farm Animals🐮
Check and refill water sources frequently. Ensure access to clean, shaded water troughs.
Use tarps, shelters, or trees to provide relief from the sun.
If you have access, use misters/fans in barns or coops to reduce heat.
Consider adding animal-safe electrolyte supplements to their water (ask your vet for guidance).
For Wildlife🐰
Leave out shallow dishes of water in shaded areas for birds, squirrels, and other wildlife.
Avoid trimming back natural cover, plants and shrubs give wildlife much-needed shade.
Let’s keep every critter safe during this heat wave!
