The weather in our area is frigid, and wind chills can be dangerous for our furry friends. Here are some tips to keep your pets safe and comfortable:

1. Limit Outdoor Time:
Take your dog out for potty breaks only, and keep walks short. Prolonged exposure to extreme cold can lead to frostbite or hypothermia.

2. Protect Their Paws:
Ice, snow, and salt can damage your pet's paw pads. Use pet-safe booties or apply paw balm before heading outside. Be sure to wipe their paws clean after walks.

3. Layer Up:
Small, short-haired, and senior dogs may need a coat or sweater for extra warmth.

4. Keep Them Dry:
Moisture can make your pet colder. Ensure their coat is dry after being outside.

5. Monitor Their Behavior:
If your pet is shivering, whining, or lifting their paws off the ground, it’s time to head inside.

Xylitol, a common sugar substitute highly toxic to dogs, is now often labeled as birch sugar. It’s crucial to recognize all its aliases to keep your furry friends safe.

Xylitol is also known by many other names, including:

Birch sugar

Wood sugar

Birch bark extract

Sucre de bouleau

Meso-Xylitol

Xlitol

Xylite

Xylo-pentane-1,2,3,4,5

(2R,3r,4S)-Pentane-1,2,3,4,5-pentol

Where it’s commonly found:

Sugar-free gum, candy, and baked goods

Peanut butter and spreads

Toothpaste and mouthwash

Dietary supplements and medications

Sugar substitutes (granulated and powdered forms)

Why it’s dangerous:
Xylitol can cause a severe drop in blood sugar and liver failure in dogs, even in tiny amounts. Symptoms include vomiting, weakness, seizures, and collapse.

What to do:

Always check product labels carefully.

Never feed your dog human food without confirming it’s safe.

If your dog ingests xylitol or birch sugar, contact a vet immediately.
