Since starting his own public stable in the fall of 2009, Tony Alagna has established himself as one of harness racing’s top trainers. Alagna has seen his stable’s earnings increase regularly and enjoyed a career-best year in 2013, with 151 wins and $5.44 million in purses. His stable ranked No. 3 in North America in earnings last year and has amassed more than $15 million since opening its doors.

Alagna trained Captaintreacherous to Pacer of the Year awards in 2012 and 2013. “The Captain” became the first pacer to win that honor in consecutive years since Jenna’s Beach Boy in 1995-96 and joined Niatross as the only horses to accomplish the feat at ages 2 and 3 since the award was first given in 1970. Pacer Bret Hanover was honored at ages 2, 3 and 4 with the Horse of the Year Award from 1964-66. Other top horses for Alagna have been My MVP, who won the 2012 Kentucky Futurity, as well as stakes-winners Authorize, Fresh Idea, Handover Belle, Ideal Magic, Major Bombay, Mel Mara, Nikki Beach, and Rockaround Sue. He was riding a pony at age 3 and studying bloodlines before he was a teenager. Soon after graduating from high school, Alagna was assisting his mom with her stable. He later worked for trainer Brian Pinske before finishing his college degree in 1997. After college, he worked as the private trainer for Pat and Ken Walker’s Fox Valley Standardbreds in Illinois for three years and then spent six years as the top assistant to trainer Erv Miller. While with the Miller Stable, he helped train standouts such as Lis Mara, Shark Gesture, Classic Photo, and Muscle Mass. He started his own stable in 2009 at the age of 37.

“I definitely get my work ethic from my mom,” Alagna said. “She instilled in me that if you don’t work hard, you’re not going to be successful. Mom always told me that if you don’t take care of the horse, the horse won’t take care of you.”

Captaintreacherous has been the Flagship for two-year-old pacing sires by money earnings for four straight years! In 2024 his freshman pacers earned in excess of $3.4 million with leading performers including $740,000 Metro Pace and International Stallion Stake winner Fallout p,2,1:48.4m $568,600; $382,200 Governor’s Cup and $150,000 NJ Classic winner Captain Optimistic p,2,1:49m $454,830; International Stallion Stake and Bluegrass Stake winner Rodeo Drive Deo p,2,1:50.1m $393,800; and PASS and Tompkins Geers winner Prince Hal Hanover p,2,1:52.3s $287,321. He shows eight $100,000 winners and four $200,000+ two-year-old winners to his credit this year.
His sophomore performers earned $5.3 million in 2024 ranking him second amongst three-year-old pacing sire money earnings with top contenders including $525,000 Little Brown Jug, $350,000 Adios, $300,000 Max Hempt Memorial, $267,960 Progress Pace and $185,500 Matron Final winner Captain Albano p,3, 1:48.1m $1,564,253 ($1,118,573 in ’24; $100,000 Jerry Silverman Memorial and Tompkins-Geers winner Caviart Belle p,3,1:49m $687,753 ($228.722 in ’24); Little Brown Jug elimination and North America Cup elimination winner Captain’s Quarters p,3,1:49.1s $714,661 ($325,518 in ’24); and $200,000 Hempt Consolation winner Captain Luke p,3,1:49.1m $671,469 ($339,360 in ’24).
His aged performers racked up $17.3 million in 2024 and his overall lifetime-progeny earning surpassed $94,483,733 with 260 $100,000 winners; 34 $500,000 winners, and 14 millionaires!
Captaintreacherous sold 28 $100,000 yearlings in 2024 with 10 selling for $200,000 and 2 for $400,000.
