Eleven days ago, we processed 15 Freedom Ranger meat birds🐓! We raise them from chicks and it usually takes about 90 days to grow them out. Yes, that is a little longer than the Cornish X crosses. We prefer a slower, more natural growth rate. They free range for their food, mostly eating grass and bugs and then we supplement with a high protein feed 1-2 times a day. Also, we give them scrap treats from the garden. ( tomatoes, cucumbers, etc.). When processing day comes, we can immediately tell how well the broth is going to be by the amount of fat the chickens have on them during the evisceration process. This batch received an A+!
I wanted to do a little experiment on how many meals I could get out of 15 chickens so here is the break down that works best for our family and we adjust accordingly if we have guests….
* 7 pkgs of breast (4 per pack)
* 1 pkg of breast (2 per pack)
* 2 pkgs of tenders
* 7 pkgs of leg quarters (4 per pack)
* 1 pkg of leg quarters (2 per pack)
* 3 pkgs of wings (8 per pack)
* 1 pkg of wings (6 per pack)
We use chicken broth for a lot of meals in place of water. A store bought broth doesn’t even come close to the flavor and richness of homemade broth!! After I made the broth, I picked all of the excess meet off of the bones and canned it for future meals such as chicken and dumplings, chicken salad, enchiladas, soups, gyozas, etc.
* 21 quarts of broth from carcassEd
* 11 pints of carcass meat
Many people groups use chicken feet for soup bases as well as specialty dishes. I decided to make broth and season with some Asian spices since we love to cook Asian dishes. This broth is very high in collagen and is super healthy.
* 7 quarts of chicken feet broth
So, there you have it! We have protein for 30 + meals plus 28 quarts of broth for the base of many more meals. All this out of 15 chickens!!!
PS…..I forgot to mention that we also got 3 quart ziplock bags of dog treats!! 🐶
We also save the livers, gizzards and hearts as well. Sometimes for us and sometimes for our dogs!☺️
I know many people do not have the option to raise their own chickens or be able to can food, however, you can purchase whole chickens (keep an eye out for sales), take them home and part them out yourselves. It will save you so much money! If you don’t know how, you tube it. There are a lot of great videos out there. Then boil your chicken carcass down and make you some broth. You can probably get at least two quarts. If you don’t have a pressure canner, (cannot water bath broth or meat), freeze it!
Food prices are on the rise and we are all looking for ways to stretch our dollars. I hope this is an encouraging post for someone. You can do this!!!
