A big loss for the dog training world. Her contributions and legacy in the field will live on and continue to inspire the dog training world.

We are deeply saddened to learn of Karen Pryor's passing. She was a pioneer in animal training and behaviour whose contributions have shaped modern dog training as we know it. Her innovative approach and entrepreneurial spirit transformed the industry, paving the way for countless trainers and animals to benefit from science-based, positive reinforcement methods.

Karen’s work extended far beyond the Karen Pryor Academy, which has educated and inspired trainers worldwide. Her book, Don’t Shoot the Dog, introduced an entire generation of trainers to the principles of clicker training and remains a cornerstone of dog training literature. The annual Clicker Expos she founded became vital opportunities for professional growth, collaboration, and community-building within the field. Her legacy also includes Reaching the Animal Mind, a profound exploration of the science and art of animal training.

Karen’s vision, intelligence, and compassion revolutionised how we communicate with and understand our canine companions. Her contributions have had a lasting impact on the lives of trainers and the dogs they work and live with. She will be greatly missed, but her legacy will continue to inspire and guide the animal training community for generations to come.

Our thoughts are with Karen’s family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched.

It's heart-wrenching to see & hear about the increasing number of dogs being abandoned and left to fend for themselves. Granite State Dog Recovery's plea to pet owners is a vital reminder of the responsibility we bear towards our loving dog companions.

Abandoning a dog not only jeopardizes their safety and well-being but also contributes to the emotional and mental distress experienced by both the abandoned animal and those who work tirelessly to rescue and care for them.

Each dog deserves a loving and secure home, and it's crucial for pet owners to fulfill their commitment to their pets, even during challenging times. If you or someone you know recognizes a found dog posted by Granite State Dog Recovery or another shelter, please speak up. What’s in a professional dog trainer’s toolbox? It’s a lot more than just treats. (Although that’s in there – a lot of smelly, high-value bits of food can go a long way!) The most important things that a trainer carries are often less obvious.

🐾 Rewards: This includes the previously mentioned treats, but rewards can be anything the dog likes! Sometimes specific toys are more exciting for a particular dog, or getting to splash in the water or find an interesting smell.
🐾 Safety tools: This may include leashes, seatbelt attachments for car rides, harnesses, and collars!
🐾 Water, a portable dog bowl, p**p bags and hand sanitizer: Meeting your dog’s physical needs are important, even (maybe especially) in the middle of a training session!
🐾 Knowledge and Empathy: You may not be able to see these, but they are some of the most important tools for professional trainers. Dogs aren’t robots, and neither are you!

It’s also vital even for professionals to know when they can handle something with a dog and when they need to bring in a different perspective. The APDT Trainer search at locateatrainer.org is a great place to find a professional trainer to be part of your training toolbox!
