Purplebrown Farmstead is part of the Countryside Initiative Program in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. We have applied the permaculture design process to develop a long term vision for these 12 acres, and are beginning to make changes to the landscape, contour by contour. We produce a lot of diverse fruit, berries, mushrooms, perennial vegetables, herbs, flowers, and animal products. We look forward to working together with others to grow a more resilient NEO!

Did you know? if you don't cut back flowers and don't remove all the natural mulch, you'll grow baby trees accidentally & provide food for birds all winter? It's a magical time to restore - when the snow falls, and when it melts, when the full moon shines bright & when darkness makes everything gloomy, your body & mind replenish with the cold air outdoors, in nature, daily. I didn't have to travel far to find respite in wilderness.

Five out of five stars. Highly recommend: nature, year round.

Yes year of course there's also lots of work happening. Because: pruning fruit trees, planning annual plantings, feeding & tasking care of the animals - bring purpose & joy too πŸ’œπŸ€Ž

Find our own organic duck eggs at
.. Though they won't be certified organic for much longer, friends ... Not because we are changing anything (we have always used certified organic feed, and follow a high standard of pasture rotation, and animal treatment)
But because (as you may have noticed) the economic and regulatory landscape is shifting quickly and among the many impacts - there is no federal funding this year for cost-share program farmers can take advantage of to off-set the high cost of organic certification. Our little tiny farm, for example, paid just over $1300 last year, and it just goes up from there.

So, we will take a pause on our organic certification this year. We hope this is short term, because we are strong advocates for voting with our dollars and investing in the institutions we want to succeed - without national organic standards (however imperfect and wavering to the trends), there is no collective standard, transparency, or accountability. And then we each have to dig deeper, and learn more personally where our food comes from? If you care about that kinda thing.

So yeah, buy our eggs and much more good local food, down by the river, in

Newsflash! Much of the money is not being distributed right now through USDA to the farmers that depended on it. Most contracts are reimbursements - which means many farmers have come out of pocket for expenses that are not being reimbursed.
These are competitive and non-competitive grants and payments. Some farmers will surely lose the farm over it.

This was a popular topic of concern among farmers at the annual conference - lots of stories, tons of stress
Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association

USDA funding remains frozen despite a rescinded order, leaving farmers and conservation programs in financial limbo with no clear timeline for payments.

Organic means that wherever these grains are grown - no glyphosphates /roundup are used and neighbors can breathe easy. It's what we strive for - clean water air & soil for all πŸ’œπŸ€Ž
