Sometimes, despite our best efforts in training and socialization, dogs may still exhibit challenging behaviors due to their genetics, early experiences, and emotions.
Remember, your dog’s behavior isn’t a reflection of you. Keep working on what you can change and accept what you can’t.

THE BLAME GAME
Is a dog’s “bad” behaviour a reflection of, or the fault of their guardian?

In some cases, yes – abuse, neglect, unmet needs etc., but this isn’t what this post is about.

This is about having a dog that behaves “badly” no matter how knowledgeable and experienced a dog guardian may be or no matter how much socialization or training that dog has had.

Some dogs are just different and more difficult than others and it’s not your fault.

Puppies are certainly not a blank slate. We cannot always mold a dog into what we want them to be. We can try our best to do everything right, but genetics, individuality, early life experiences, learning experiences, trauma - all play a role in how a dog behaves.

Behaviour is driven by emotion and emotions are not something that we have control over. Just like we cannot control how another person feels or reacts to something.

One of my dogs is difficult. She is highly sensitive, reactive, unsociable, introverted and suspicious of other people and other dogs.

I know first hand how it feels to be judged, blamed, feel embarrassed, isolated, frustrated, angry and resentful.

Surely it must be my fault – I must be doing something wrong, especially as a behaviour consultant, if I can’t even control the behaviour of my own dog? What will people think?

It took me a long time to accept her for who she is, to ignore the judgement, the blame and all the negative feelings that go with it.

It has taken a long time of consistent work, managing the environment, understanding and supporting her to see glimmers of positive change in her behaviour and accepting that she will never be perfect.

My own experiences with my “difficult” dog have gifted me empathy, understanding, compassion and relatability for those who have similar difficulties.

Our dog’s behaviour is not a reflection on us.

Keep working on what you can change and accept what you can’t.

🔥🐾Today is National Pet Fire Safety Day
Here are some essential fire safety tips to ensure your furry friends are protected in case of a fire emergency:

▪Create a Fire Escape Plan:
Include your pets in your family's fire escape plan. Assign a family member to be responsible for each pet. Practice your escape plan regularly to make sure everyone knows what to do
▪Place pet alert window clings on your windows to let firefighters know there are pets inside.
Make sure to update the number of pets as needed.
▪When leaving home, keep pets in areas or rooms near exits where firefighters can easily find them.
▪Never leave pets unattended around open flames like candles, fireplaces, or stovetops. Pets can accidentally knock them over, causing a fire.
▪Use flameless candles for a safer alternative.
▪Ensure that electrical cords are out of reach from curious pets who might chew on them.
▪Use stove k**b covers to prevent pets from accidentally turning on the stove.

Your pets are part of your family, and their safety is just as important. Take these steps to ensure they are protected in case of a fire. Stay safe and prepared!

Does your dog have a label?? Labels are misleading and limit your dog's potential.

LETTING GO OF THE LABEL
People love to label things - from containers to personality types, physical or mental differences and everything in between.

Why do we like labels so much? Labels are comforting, they help us to feel more secure.

Labels allow us to close that particular “box”, because it now has a label and we no longer have to think about it or be concerned about it.

It’s been judged, identified, labelled and we can now move on, confident in the belief that there’s nothing more to be done.

We may also be very good at labelling dogs. My dog is stubborn, aggressive, lazy, shy, timid, greedy, jealous, untrainable…. It’s comforting for us to assign a label because it takes the pressure off trying to find out why they behave that way because we might believe that it’s just the way they are.

If we remove the label and take note of the behaviour in context and the circumstances or environment it’s happening in, we may realise that our dogs need our help to cope, not our labels.

Look into what can be done to improve or change that behaviour if it's something you’d like to change.

Sometimes a label does fits, it’s just the way it is and we need to accept that, but sometimes labels hide the need to look beneath the surface and discover what the real cause of that behaviour is.
