I had a client’s daughter wanting to cover equine dentistry for her career day so she sent me a few questions. I thought it was pretty neat!
Equine dentist
Do you like your job?
I absolutely love my job❤️
What is your favorite part of your job?
I get to meet a lot of great people and build relationships. I also get help horses be able to live and eat comfortably, and perform to their full potential. I really wanted a job where I could help horses and people. Being an equine dentist allows me to do both of those things. Also, I get to help educate others about how their horse’s teeth work and why it’s so important to get their teeth done annually.
What procedures do you do the most?
A routine float is removing sharp enamel points and balancing to the mouth. That includes taking down malocclusions such as, waves, ramps, hooks, and protruding molars and premolars. I also do extractions pretty routinely. Those include wolf teeth, caps(baby teeth), molars and premolars.
What is the most challenging part of your job?
Telling people no. I can’t always get to every person’s horse. I have to be smart because it is a business and for it to continue, it has to be profitable.
Do you need to have insurance to do your job? You don’t have to carry insurance, but it is definitely recommended.
Is continuing education required?
Yes. In the state of Texas an equine dentist has to be certified through the IAED or EDPA, and licensed through the Texas Veterinary Board. In order to keep a current valid license, I have to complete 6 hours of CE annually.
What expenses do you have as a small business owner?
