We are delivering great news this Monday morning! Kevin visited us for his post- operative recheck and was given an excellent report! Dr. McDonnell says that Kevin is much stronger, comfortable, and has good sensation! He’s had impressive improvement within the last two weeks and believes that Kev will make a near normal recovery!!
Way to go little buddy!!!
Cash had an emergency C4-5 ventral slot (neck surgery) in October to address a severe disk extrusion, causing compression of the spinal cord. With a lot of rest and TLC, Cash is doing great, living life pain free! Mom and dad said that they have made some excellent lifestyle changes for Cash. They now use a harness instead of a neck collar for his walks, and have gotten him a set of stairs to help him on and off the couch. Little changes like that go a long way! Good thinking mom and dad!

Charlie came to Dr. McDonnell in January 2017 for help controlling her cluster seizures (multiple seizures back to back) that would last for 3-4 days every few months. Charlie’s MRI and spinal tap indicated that idiopathic epilepsy was to blame. Dr. McDonnell started Charlie on a few different seizure medications, making adjustments as needed throughout the last six years. Within the last year, Charlie has only had 2 occurrences of cluster seizures- one episode in November 2022 and another in august 2023. Both episodes were well controlled at home with her “rescue medication” protocol. We are so happy that Charlie can still be her happy self and enjoy the company of her best friend! Thank you to Charlie’s mom and dad for sharing her pictures, and allowing us to share her story!
We know that seizures can be terrifying and very difficult to treat. We understand how emotionally exhausting it can be. Our team of neurologists are here to help other families like Charlie’s to get better seizure control so more pets can live long, happy lives!

Today we would like to celebrate Harpers 1 year with VNIOC!!Harper is a 6yr old French Bulldog who presented to VNIOC 1 yr ago for painful episodes and not herself. Her owner knew something was off with Harper; she just was not herself. Moving slower, not wanting to jump on furniture or use stairs. It was recommended Harper get an MRI of her neck which revealed she had MUE. We sent out her spinal fluid which also came back abnormal. MUE is a category or group of diseases that affect the brain and spinal cord as a result of inflammatory cells within the central nervous system. She started her Cytosar treatment that day. Harper has had 8 treatments in the last year. With her family's dedication and support. She continues to do amazing!! We are all so happy to see Harper back to herself.
Meet Enzo🐾💝! Enzo is a spunky 5 year old daschund who presented to VNIOC in August for hind limb paralysis. Dr. McDonnell recommended a TLS (back) MRI which revealed a large ruptured intervertebral disc at vertebrae T12-T13 on the left side causing Enzo’s paraplegia. Dr. McDonnell performed a hemilaminectomy at T12-T13. Enzo did great post surgery, and when we saw him back for his 2 week post op recheck, Enzo was back to his normal self! 🎉 Amazing job to team Enzo!
Hi everyone! Have you heard of Wobbler's Syndrome? This disease is characterized by osseous (or bony) compression of the spinal cord and/or nerve roots, which leads to neurological signs and/or neck pain. The term 'Wobbler Syndrome' is used to describe the characteristic wobbly gait that affected dogs have. This generally occurs in large breed dogs. Here at VNIoC, we see many cases of Wobbler's, like our next highlighted patient - Pudge Donnelly! Pudge, a 6 year old Labrador Retriever, presented to our hospital as an emergency consultation for being unable to walk. An MRI the same day revealed Caudal Cervical Spondylomyelopathy (a.k.a. Wobblers)! Pudge was able to be stabilized with pain medications, and is now much improved! We look forward to being a part of his continued progress!
