Our educational ambassadors are simply the best, but this pair takes it a step further! Introducing Indy (F) and Peabody (M) our Barred owls. Not only do they attend numerous educational programs for us, but they are also wonderful surrogate parents. On April 24th we received a fledging Barred owl from Silver Lake. It was on the ground with no parents around. It was too young to be left alone so it was brought into our facility and was placed in the mew with Indy and Peabody. Eventually the three were moved to a bigger flight pen that included a trough that would be used for "mouse school" so that Indy and Peabody could teach it to hunt. The youngster met all of its milestones and was taken back to Silver Lake on July 7th and released. This is best part of what we do. helping injured or orphaned birds of prey return to the wild. ❤

Here is a link to our website with the story of this fledgling

Moxie and Jamie are still keeping an eye on the young'uns today, but I hope they briefly move out of the downtown area by Thursday as right behind that nest box is the area where the Fort Wayne 4th of July fireworks will be launched from. They do this every year so I'm sure Moxie and Jamie have a great roosting spot picked out for the family 😀

Good afternoon, followers!

Back on May 24th we shared with you the story of a juvenile red-tailed hawk that had fallen from its nest that was atop a power line tower. The initial injury was a broken wing. While with us, the nestling was eating well and was exhibiting defensive posture, which is good as we don't want them imprinting on people. But as time went on, other things started to occur. It began pulling out its feathers from both wings and then we discovered it had broken its leg at the knee. The feather pulling could have been the result of stress or depression, but we were puzzled by the leg break. Could something have been genetically wrong with this nestling and perhaps mom knew that and pushed it from the nest? We will never know the answer to that but in its best interest, we made the difficult decision to humanly euthanize this nestling.

Nature can be both beautiful and cruel to watch but we give our very best efforts to each of the raptors in our care. For those of you that may have contributed for this nestling's care, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts and rest assured, any remaining funds will be used for the care of other injured or orphaned birds of prey.

Update - Tom U37

Tom was examined by the ICU staff at Soarin' Hawk and was found to be in excellent body condition. We also did radiographs (x-rays) and found no broken bones. However, radiographs will not show soft tissue injuries. After looking at the comments on my post from yesterday, an individual did see one of the falcons hit the window of the Indiana Michigan building on Tuesday, 6-4-24 but it was able to fly away and land on another ledge. Was this Tom and did he do the same thing on Wednesday the 5th only this time he succumbed to the strike? His body condition upon examination leads us to believe that a window strike was the ultimate cause of death vs being hit by a vehicle. Only God knows for sure and I take comfort knowing that Tom is now flying high over the rainbow bridge 🌈....until we meet again ❤

It is with great sadness that I inform you, that shortly after I made the end of the season post, we received a call that one of the falcon chicks was found in the middle of Calhoun Street, right in front of the Indiana Michigan building. When I arrived, the caller had moved the chick to the sidewalk and when I bent down, I could see the band number was U37 which was Tom. Tom was named after Fort Wayne's beloved long-time mayor who passed away earlier this year.

I am completely devastated to share this news with all of you. He will be taken to Soarin' hawk to be examined by our ICU staff to see if we can tell what might have happened to him. As a side note, our founder, Bob, was down for our board meeting at one of the neighboring buildings and was watching the chicks, along with Moxie and Jamie soaring around the Indiana Michigan building and landing on the ledges. Did Tom strike the building or was perhaps hit by a vehicle? We likely will never know but I will share our findings, if any, with you.

Fly high, Tom (U37)

Season wrap up ❤

And just like that, they have fledged. From the first egg on 3-11-24, to the first hatch on 4-19-24, to their banding on 5-17-24 and their eventual fledging in late May / early June. The time goes by in the blink of an eye! I've chosen a few photos to spotlight this year and information concerning the descendants of Moxie and Jamie are on the last 3 photos. Please click on the photos to read the text. I hope you've enjoyed watching season 12 and will join us again in March 2025. It's been a privilege to share pictures and information with you and as always, if you need us or have concerns, please reach out and thank you!!!!

This bunch of kids are all over the place!! I captured this photo yesterday. It's only been 9 days since banding and just look at the change in them. Normally we will still see them on the camera in mid June but I'm not so sure with this group. They are moving along very quickly ❤

Hello Soarin’ Hawk Family!

So far this year we have only taken in five babies. Totally abnormal but also fantastic!

Three have been in perfect health other than being displaced and unable to be re-nested. They will stay with us until we know they are capable of taking care of themselves!

One was euthanized on admission due to a severally bad femur break.

The last one, unfortunately, has a broken wing due to an extreme fall! . BUT we are hopeful with cage rest that this fracture will heal and he may return back to his home in a few months!

Good morning!

Tom is doing fine and is on the rail beneath the box and he's preening away ❤ Hold on to your seat as this is only the beginning of the wonderful time in their development. Moxie and Jamie are old pro's at this and will take good care of them!

But as always, if you have any immediate concerns, please reach out to us and we thank you in advance.

Many thanks to the good folks at Indiana Michigan for moving the cam so that we could check on Tom.. Their staff goes above and beyond this time of the year and it’s greatly appreciated!!

Found the pictures.

I am sharing the photos of the area around the nest box. In 2022 Nova did the same thing as Tom, and tumbled out of the box. Now we did intervene that time but there was just one chick left in the box so it was doable.

The first photo shows the outside of the box. The red line points to the area that Tom tumbled from so you can see there is room under the box for him. At the end of the red line you can see the edge of the roof. However, the area beyond that is like another ledge that wraps around that area of the building. So until they are older and can hop or fly that high, they aren't' in danger of going off the top of the building simply by tumbling out of the box. The final photo shows Nova and how she was tucked in the corner. The edge of the roof is above her head and that additional ledge is at the very top of the photo.

I hope this helps! I will share more photos a bit later as they start exploring the railing and the edge....that's when the real nail biting begins!😳

Nail biting season has begun!

Tom (U37) tumbled out of the nest box to the roof below. He is ok and is exploring the roof area under the box. I have alerted I&M so that they can move the camera, if need be, to check on him. Moxie will still care for him as usual and hopefully she can use some food to lure him back to the box. I did observe him hopping from the roof floor to the rail so he should be able to walk the rail back to the box.

While it is unnerving for us to watch it is a normal process for the chicks as they prepare to fledge. I was in a discussion with Bob Walton of Soarin' Hawk, and we feel that the chicks are too old at this point to intervene in putting Tom back in the box. The reason is because in doing so, it could frighten the others and they may jump of the box themselves leading to possible injury.

We will keep monitoring this situation and provide updates. I will also share, as soon as I find them, pictures of the roof of the building which should make you feel a bit better as there is plenty of room under the box for exploring so it's not like he could have tumbled off of the building.

Stay tuned and thank you to our followers for alerting us to this situation. It takes a flock ❤️

Introducing the class of 2024. 2 boys and 2 girls were banded this afternoon at the Indiana Michigan Power Center in downtown Fort Wayne, IN

Left to right-River (M) (U49), Tom (M) (U37), Cindy ( F) (U48) and Storm (F)(U36). All of the bands are black over blue.

Tom and Cindy were named in honor of our late mayor and first lady of Fort Wayne who both passed away earlier this year. ❤️

Happy banding day ❤

We are so excited to find out the names of Moxie and Jamie's chicks for 2024. This makes the twelfth season for this pair, and they will now have 37 banded chicks to their credit!

Watch the cam around 3:50pm today and you will see an arm reach in and grab the chicks one by one. They will then bring them down to the event area where they will be examined, sexed and banded. Folks from Soarin' Hawk will then show the chicks to the invited audience. They will then return to the nest box at approximately 4:30pm but not before they do a clean up of the nest box debris, which I am personally looking forward to! We hope to do a Facebook live for the event but if not, we will share photos and links from the various news organizations that will be covering the event.

Good morning from the grands!

Carla's chicks are just a couple of days younger than Moxie's so if they band in PA, which I'm trying to confirm, it should be sometime after the 17th. I think Carla needs to do some housekeeping 🤣

Flash's chicks are doing great as well. I know that they will be banded and will let you know a date as soon as I have one.

Mark your calendars!

The date has been set for the banding of Moxie and Jamie's chicks, which will be on May 17th, at the Indiana Michigan Power Center in downtown Fort Wayne. You will be able to watch, on the falcon cam, the retrieval of the chicks at approximately 3:50pm EST. They will be returned to the nest box at approximately 4:30pm EST.

I will try to do a Facebook live where you will see them be examined, banded and named. The folks from Soarin' Hawk Raptor Rehabilitation Center will then take the chicks around the room for a close-up view before being returned to the nest box.

Here is an oldie but a goodie from Indiana Michigan Power on how this process rolls out 😀
