TRICKS-MAS - DAY 12 ✨
Something a little trickier today…
Lights On/Off! 💡
This trick teaches your dog to turn the lights on and off. A great trick to impress your Christmas guests. 👌
How to start…
Grab painter's tape or a sticky note. (Your dog should already have a paw target to object before doing this trick).
Then…
Place a piece of tape on your hand and give your dog the cue to offer a paw target.
Transfer the tape or sticky note to light switch and cue your dog for paw target to object.
Make the sticky note smaller and smaller
Remove tape, and cue paw target to the light without sticky note.
Finally…
Rename the cue to something like “Get the lights” or “Lights on”
Tah-Dah! Wouldn’t this be a great trick to master? Give it a go, and keep me updated on your progress!

TRICKS-MAS COUNTDOWN - DAY 10 ✨
Tell me…
How's it going to spend time with your pups?
Would you like another?
Let's talk slippers! 🥿
More specifically, ask your dog to bring your slippers to you on cue!
Not only is this fun for your dog to learn, but it’s also extra handy for you!
What you’ll need for this trick is yummy treats, a little bit of patience and some old slippers! (save the newer ones for once they have mastered the trick!)
Your dog should already have a fetch to hand for this trick and be familiar with shaping.
Steps:
✅ In a distraction-free room, present your slipper to your dog and wait.
✅ Mark and reward the moment your dog looks at the slippers. Repeat 2-3 times.
✅ Next, present your slipper but wait for your dog to touch them in any way (mouth, nose, teeth). Mark and reward for any touch. Repeat 2-3 times
✅ Now, present your slipper but wait for any teeth to slippers. Mark and reward for any touch.
✅ Repeat gradually moving the slippers to the floor.
✅ Lastly, place the slippers on the ground and wait for your dog to pick them up. The moment they pick up, present your hand and ask them to drop it into your hand. Mark and reward.
✅ Now that your dog is fetching your slippers and bringing them to you, you can put the trick on cue, such as “slippers” or “Fetch me my Slippers.”
✅ You can make this trick a tad harder by increasing the distance by moving your slippers to another room. Use the cue you have chosen and reward them with a treat when they get it right. Now your slippers can be retrieved wherever they may be in the house!

TRICKS-MAS COUNTDOWN - DAY 9 ✨
Ready to learn a trick that will help your dog build confidence while having fun?
Yes? I’ve got just the trick for you!
Today we are going to teach your dog how to weave through your legs!
For this trick, make sure your dog is in an environment with plenty of room to move, free from distractions.
Place treats in both hands and starts with your dog next to you, facing the same direction as you. Toys work great for this trick too.
Place the foot farthest from your dog forward, and slowly lure your dog through your legs to finish beside your front foot.
Mark when your dog reaches the outside of your front foot and reward next to your front foot. Then step your back foot forward and repeat in the opposite direction.
As your dog gets really good at this, you can remove the food from your hand and guide them using only a hand signal. Mark and reward for each step at first before asking your dog to take two or more steps.
When your dog is doing really well you can add two weaves through before your mark and reward. Then, three or four steps.
Have fun practicing your new trick!

TRICKS-MAS COUNTDOWN - DAY 8 ✨
Jumping through circled arms is a very entertaining (and impressive!) trick best suited to small to medium-sized dogs who are fully grown. This trick is much easier if your dog has already jumped over your leg, hoop or baton.
This trick is physically exhausting and should take a few weeks to teach, so focus on that bonding time you guys will have!
Let’s go…
Sit next to a wall, chair or couch on a non-slip padded surface. Put your arms low, touching the ground, and your hand against the wall. By doing this, your dog won't go around. Toss a treat over your arm to encourage your dog to hop over your arm. A toy works well too.
Repeat until your dog is happily going over your arm.
Gradually, in small increments, move your arm 1-2 inches higher at a time so that your dog is jumping over rather than walking over.
Now, move your hand away from the wall, and reward your pup for each successful over.
When your dog jumps over your arm and away from the wall, it's time to fade the lure and get the trick on a verbal cue.
Once you have the hop over on a cue, you can begin to complete the circle.
After you give your dog a cue to hop over, place your other hand high over your jump arm to make a large circle. Over time, you can make your circle smaller.
You can eventually cue your dog to jump through your arms by presenting your circle arms.
Don’t be put off by this one if it takes time to make progress. Instead, focus on that time you’re spending with your pups!
How are you feeling about this one? Going to give this trick a go today?

TRICKS-MAS COUNTDOWN - DAY 8 ✨
I LOVE this trick...
...because I get ALL the kisses and a perfect way to bond and spend time with your dog. 😘
Teaching your dog to give you a kiss on cue is one of our favorites to teach for some dogs (the more calm dogs). It also happens to be one of the easiest tricks to train a dog to do.
Pucker up and let's begin!
Start with a few nose targets to hand, mark, and reward.
After that, you'll want to sit down, keep asking for a nose target to your hand, but gradually move your target hand towards your cheek. Place the back of your hand on your cheek and ask for a nose target.
You can gradually move your hand away from your cheek after doing a few reps to your hand (back of your hand on your cheek).
Now... this trick might take a few days or weeks but you can eventually place a verbal cue such as "give me a kiss" or even make the kiss sound as the cue!
Do me a favor? Give this a go and share your training with us in the group!

TRICKS-MAS COUNTDOWN - DAY 6 ✨
Another new day, another new trick!
This time we are going to teach your dog how to jump over your knee! This a fun trick your pup will pick up in no time!
Sit on the floor with your dog on one side and stretch your legs flat on a softly padded, slid-proof floor.
Use the hand furthest from your dog to lure them over your leg. Mark and reward them for going over your leg. Walking over is fine to start.
Repeat a few times.
Once your dog is happily going over your leg, remove the treat out of your hand and try using a hand gesture to signal to your dog to go over your leg.
From here, you can raise your leg just a little higher and get a jump over. Be mindful of the height and surface you're asking your dog to jump on to prevent injuries.
When your dog can jump over your extended leg, you can bend your knee so that your thigh is horizontal. Using your sweeping motion, signal your dog to jump over your knee. Mark and reward each success.
Jumping over your knee is the first step to learning to jump through your arms. Just like other jumping tricks, keep the sessions short and let your dog rest between sessions.
Now.. I’ve got two questions for you… 👇
Are you going to share your updates about this trick in the group today? (please do, I’m watching! 👀)
Are you feeling festive yet?! 🎄🙌

TRICKS-MAS COUNTDOWN - ✨
Let's get those puppers posing!
It's time for Paws In and Pose!
This is a confidence-building trick as your dog learns to place paws in a box.
Let's begin...
To start, like any new prop, you'll want to introduce your dog to the box so that your dog is not afraid of it. Cut down the sides of a shallow box so that the sides are just a few inches high.
Place the box down on a non-slippery surface and mark the moment your dog offers any eye contact on the Box. Reward and Repeat!
Wait for your dog to touch the box in any way (paws, nose, mouth), mark and reward. And repeat!
The next step is to look for your dog, placing a paw inside the box. The moment they do, mark and reward.
Repeat, and gradually progress to two paws in the box.
If you have a box large enough you can progress to all four paws in the box. To do this, look for a third and eventually all four paws in the box.
From here, you can put this trick on cue. Common cues are “Go hide” or “Get in the Box.” Once your dog is comfortable getting into a box on cue, you can begin to add distance away so you can snap a picture.
Keep your sessions short and set a timer or count out your reps so you don't over-exhaust your dog. “Paws in a Box” is a great shaping exercise for you and your dog.
Feel free to try it out and let us know what you think.
Let’s see those pics. Share a pic and use the #clachristmascountdown, and don't forget to tag @caninelearningacademy so we can share your pics or videos.

TRICKS-MAS COUNTDOWN - DAY 5✨
Ahhh! The cutest trick ever! Here's how to make your dog sit pretty for Santa!
In this trick, your dog sits on their back legs and curls their front legs in front of them. It will also require your dog to know already “sit.”
You’ll also need some of your dog’s favorite treats to hand!
This is a great trick for healthy dogs. If your dog has pre-existing injuries, consult your vet to inquire if this trick is safe for them.
Here are the steps to this trick…
First things first, ask them to sit. Reward the sit.
Now, hold a treat just above his nose and slowly raise it a couple of inches above the nose. Your dog should lift their front feet off the ground when they try and gets the treat.
Now praise them and give them the treat.
Continue raising the treat higher so your dog stretches further until they are entirely sitting on their hind legs only.
** Some dogs have trouble staying balanced in this position, so you may need to let them rest their front legs on your arm until they build the core stretch to do this trick.**
When your pup is comfortable and repeating this trick, you're ready to put it on cue, such as "sit pretty."
This trick is also a good stretch for dogs and strengthens their core muscles, which protect the spine from injury.
Practice short sessions daily until your dog builds the balance and strength to hold the position.
Give it a go, let me know how you get on and please drop those videos into the group; I want to see them!

TRICKMAS COUNTDOWN - DAY 3 ✨
Playing hide and seek is fun, right?
Your dog especially thinks so!
It's a great way to keep them busy indoors
Here are the rules (just in case you weren't sure!)
Practice your sit or down stay with your dog. Rewarding for staying put.
Once they are staying put, go hide 10-12 treats throughout the selected room. Place the treats in plain sight at different heights your dog can reach.
When you first play this game, hide your treats in fairly easy-to-find places. As they get the hang of the game, you can make it slightly more challenging.
Now that the treats are placed bring your dog to the room and say something like, "Find It!". Then, sit back and let your dog explore with their nose without hovering over your dog.
You may need to help show your dog where the first treat is and continue encouraging them from a distance.
Once they get good at this game, you can branch out to different rooms and eventually into the backyard.
Have fun and don't forget to share how you got on with this trick!

Trick-Mas Countdown - DAY 2 ✨
This one will knock your socks, clean off… literally!
Today we are going to teach your dog to remove your socks!
This trick is handy if you have a dog who is a little unsure of playing tug… and you don’t have to take your socks off! 😂
Step 1: Motivate your dog to tug by playing tug games with their favorite toy
Step 2: You can now play the same game with an old sock until your dog feels confident tugging on it
Step 3: You can put half the socks on your hand at first to encourage your dog to play. Praise and reward your dog when they pull at the sock (on your hand).
Step 4: Now that your dog is pulling the sock off your hand, place the sock loosely on your foot with enough material for your dog to grab and pull away.
Step 5: Reward your dog when they pull your sock off!
Step 6: From here, all that's left for this trick is for your dog to grab the sock and bring it back to you.
Give this a go, and let me know how you get on with a video, a photo, or even just a comment if you’re short on time! 👇

Here we go... Day 1 of the Trixmas Countdown,
One of my favorite tricks to teach a dog is to teach them to tell you a secret on cue!
You'll only need some yummy treats, a can-do attitude, and a sprinkle of festive patience to pull this off!
So, let’s start the first day of tricks, shall we? 🙂
There are several ways to teach this trick. If your dog already has a nose target to hand on cue, you'll find it pretty easy to use these steps to teach this fun trick.
✅ With your dog in front of you, start with a nose target to your right hand. Mark and reward (with left hand) for every success. Reward a few times before moving on.
✅ Continue to cue the nose target with your dog while you gradually move your target hand (right) towards the left side of your face with your hand in front of your left ear.
✅ Now that your target hand is over your ear, reward with your left hand, but hold the treat in place while your dog nibbles on it. This will make it look as if your dog is whispering in your ear and build duration in the goal position.
✅ You can eventually put this trick on cue, such as "Do you have a secret" or simply "Secret," and then present your hand over your ear.
Spend a few minutes practicing this trick several times a day. Once your dog gets the trick, it’ll be excited to tell you a secret every time.
