Welcome to our latest team member! We recently adopted this adorable hamster. He was a patient of ours from the Petsmart in Commack. Our staff fell in love with him and the Petsmart management graciously allowed us to keep him. Well are still working on a name for him. We will announce the name once we finalize it.

Happy National Veterinary Technician week! We could not function so efficiently and provide such amazing patient care without our technicians! We appreciate their dedication and hard work this week, and always! Please be sure to thank Ashley, Sandra and Kelly extra this week! 🐇🐀🐹🦜🐦🐢🦎🐍

We would also like to take an extra moment to think of Heather this week. Heather played a very important role in training all of our technicians who have passed through IEVC over the last 10+ years. We are grateful for her knowledge, skill and compassion that lives on through her training. ❤️

Thank you to all those Vet Techs out there for everything you do! We appreciate you!

Ovarian Cancer Awareness: Please Read and Save a Life!
Information from National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC) www. ovarian.org

Nearly 22,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year, and approximately 14,000 women die from the disease. This is because the early signs of ovarian cancer are easily confused with other more common and non-cancerous ailments. Unfortunately, most cases are diagnosed in later stages when the prognosis is poor. However, if diagnosed and treated early when the cancer is confined to the o***y, the five-year survival rate is over 90 percent. Remember that the ovaries are located deep in the abdomen and even in early stages cannot be palpated on routine examinations. There is no early detection test for ovarian cancer; a Pap test cannot detect the disease. So, women need know their bodies, be aware of the signs and take early action. It’s imperative that the early signs and symptoms are recognized not only by women, but by their families and the healthcare community.

Signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer may include:
Abdominal bloating or swelling
Quickly feeling full when eating
Weight loss
Discomfort in the pelvic area
Fatigue
Back pain
Changes in bowel habits, such as constipation
A frequent need to urinate

You can see that these symptoms are also commonly caused by many other things. When they are caused by ovarian cancer, they tend to be persistent and a change from normal - for example, they occur more often or are more severe. These symptoms are more likely to be caused by other conditions, and most of them occur just about as often in women who don't have ovarian cancer. But if you have these symptoms more than 12 times a month, see your doctor so the problem can be found and treated if necessary.

We are walking on behalf of Heather on Saturday September 30th with the NOCC in Belmont Lake Park. Please consider a donation

NOCC leads the fight against ovarian cancer in the US. We support survivors and caregivers, raise awareness and fund research to find a cure.

It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of our long time team member and friend, Heather Mattinson.

Heather was a brilliant teacher, skilled technician and fierce advocate for her patients. Her work with Island Exotic and the veterinary field as a whole has touched thousands of pets and their families. Heather was an integral part of training countless technicians, students and doctors over her many years as an LVT. Her memory, skill and knowledge will continue to live on through all of those that she helped shape and mold.

In her honor, we ask that you consider making a donation to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition to help others continue to fight the terrible disease that took her from us far too soon.

With the warm weather coming, this is very important to remember! Please be on the look out when driving and if you have to move a box turtle to safety please carry it in the direction that it was already headed! Do not relocate them and be sure to speak to a rehabilitator if you have any questions. We have many excellent groups on Long Island!

Please don't move or release box turtles anyplace other than where they are found.

Lets talk rabbit teeth! Rabbits have open rooted, continuously growing teeth! Because of this it is common for rabbits to get incisor maloclussion. This is when their teeth do not line up properly, so they are not worn down correctly when chewing. It can be genetic or the result of trauma. Lop and dwarf breed rabbits are most prone to this due to their compact faces, but it is possible in any breed. These cases will need to be addressed by either trimming or removal of the affected teeth. Because the teeth usually overgrow within a few weeks of trimming, many people opt for removal of the teeth.

Last week, we saw Bear for removal of his incisors that were previously being trimmed every few weeks. His incisors were completely removed and he began eating like a champ immediately!

Yearly well exams, or biannual as your rabbits age, are important to catch any abnormalities to the teeth that may not be visible at home. Symptoms of maloclussion may include decreased appetite, drooling, decreased stool production, lethargy and should be addressed by a rabbit savy veterinarian immediately!
