Have you ever been really stressed about accomplishing something, then, you nail it and feel great? That is what the goal of confidence building is for dogs. Learning how to work through and overcome stress in unfamiliar situations.

This was Gary’s lesson focusing on confidence building and socialization. He nailed it!!

Meet Gary!! He’s killing it in his private lesson program!

He has fear aggression and lacks confidence when it comes to new people. Him and his owner have been learning all about setting boundaries, opening up a line of communication, building confidence, and learning how to advocate.

We welcomed Ivy into our 10 week private lesson program. Ivy has mild fear aggression and gets uncomfortable when new people come into her home/space. She has also had issues with the other dog in the home. We have made some changes to how she lives day to day and started laying a foundation. She is making great progress in her program already!!

Does your dog struggle with behavioral issues? Our 10 week program is a great option!

If you have a fearful, nervous, or reactive dog think of your walk as training opportunity but do not think of it as fulfilling exercise for them.

If your dog is fearful, nervous, or reactive on your daily walks chances are they are not having a great time. Give them an outlet that fulfills them. Fetch, tug, off-leash time (or long line if they are not off-leash trained), flirt-pole.

If you are struggling with your dog on the walk hire a professional to help bring peace back into your walk and find a fulfilling outlet for you and your pooch!

We’re baaacckkkl!!!

Starting off our new training season introducing Tucker!! Tucker is a 2.5 year old mixed breed enrolled in our 5 week program.

Tucker has had some relationship issues with his owners, as well as, resource guarding issues. Prior to starting his program his parents made some adjustments to how they live with Tucker and it has been paying off! Tucker and his parents killed their first lesson, and Tucker is showing he is one smart boy!!

Be on the lookout for more updates of Tucker’s progress!

In 2022 we decided to open Mountain Mutts! Amidst working full time and part time jobs we still wanted to slowly start to grow in our community, and I think we did just that!!

We are very thankful for each and every one of our clients. For allowing us to help you and your pup build a better relationship! We have had so much fun and learned from each and every one of you.

We are starting 2023 with a break. A break to revamp some of our packages. A break to maybe offer some new, exciting things (YAY). A break to talk about what worked and what didn’t work. And most importantly a break to travel and learn more so we can help more dogs and their owners. We will still be scheduling evaluations at this time, and anyone interested in booking a program will be booked end of March into April.

Thank you for an amazing first year of business!!

Happy Thanksgiving from our pack to yours!

✨Tips to keep your pup safe during the holidays✨

With the holiday season quickly approaching we often see a rise in the number of dogs being rehomed, surrendered to a shelter, or needing behavioral rehab assistance due to a number of reasons. Be your dogs #1 advocate and keep them safe with these easy tips. These can be for any dog, from nervous to happy-go-lucky!!

1. Utilize a Crate: If your dog is properly crate trained put them in their crates before guests arrive with an enrichment toy or safe chew.

2. Tether Decompression: Start practicing tether decompression now!! All you need is a leash and a flat collar. Start having your dog wear the leash and collar around the house, and throughout the day tether your dog to a stationary item. Keep them tethered until they relax (nose-to-tail on the ground). Start in a low distraction setting, like when you are watching tv, and work up to having your dog settle around distractions. This is going to teach your dog to settle on their own!! Make sure to have guests ignore your dog (no touch or no talk).

3. Place Command: If your dog can hold a “place” have them go to their designated place area while you have guests coming in and out, socializing, and eating. Make sure to tell your guests to ignore your dog (no touch, no talk). You can also use a tether to ensure your dog will not break place.

All of these above will ensure that your dog is not able to door dash, jump all over guests, counter surf, or be put in an uncomfortable situation around guests that may cause them to act out.

Feel free to comment any questions below!

This is Kido! She enrolled in our 5 week program for dog reactivity. We’ve spent some time working up her basic obedience and engagement. The last couple lessons we’ve worked her around one of our dogs at a distance. During yesterdays training we decided it was time to challenge her and WOW did she rise to the occasion!

“She’s never been this close to a dog without barking her head off”.
We knew you had it in you, Kido!

We will still be taking on new clients, as well as, scheduling evaluations during this time, so if you submit a contact form we will still get back to you!

If after an evaluation you are interested in one of our programs the program will be booked starting in March.

We have decided to take a couple months off after we finish our current program clients to spend time with family and travel.

Thank you for understanding 🫶🏼

Kylo is enrolled in our 10 Week Program to work on his excitability, overall calmness, and on/off-leash obedience.

We have been learning a lot about Kylo in these first few lessons and molding the program to fit his needs. Kylo is very handler sensitive meaning he picks up on body language very easily and needs a fair but soft hand. We are spending lots of time making sure the owners are handling him the way he needs to be handled. Along with obedience, we are also showing his owners a proper play outlet to express his genetics.

If you are considering looking in to training for your dog or you have already ventured down that path just know that having a trained dog is a lifestyle.

Training does not end after your training program, it does not end the moment you leave the facility, and it does not end the moment your hour session ends. Training is forever, and it is sometimes it is not easy.

As a trainer it is my goal to coach you on how to teach, live with, and effectively handle your dog. All while teaching your dog a valuable skill set and building confidence within them.

Set realistic goals for yourself and your dog,
stay consistent, stay patient, and expect gradual change over time.

Happy training!

Dogs by nature are more dog selective and may not like every dog they meet. New dog introductions should be done carefully especially when bringing in a new dog to their territory (home).

Some friendships will not form overnight and will require patience, clear boundaries, structure, and some management.

Your dog is normal if they don’t love every dog! Plus, from a socialization aspect dogs/puppies should not meet every dog they see.

IT IS NOT NORMAL FOR DOGS TO “VISIT” DOGS IN OTHER HOMES

A frequent “complaint” I get from owners in why they want to seek out training is because their dog displays aggression when another dog visits their home or when they take their dog to visit in someone else’s home.

Guys, this is not normal for dogs.

Can we give up the idea of dogs visiting “dog friends” at other houses as a necessity? You’re taking an animal - a predator - and bringing it to another predator’s territory. Dogs are not human. Wild canids don’t visit other territories for an evening of appetizers and cocktails. That’s a human thing.

Yes, there are dogs who truly enjoy the company of others and are sociable and non territorial. Those dogs can accept visiting dogs or go to other dogs’ homes without issue. If your dog truly enjoys these activities, then by all means continue to enrich their lives! But know that this is the minority, and not “normal” behavior that should be expected of all dogs.

It tends to be a problem when the dog hits social maturity, when a honeymoon phase ends after rehoming, or when the owner expects the new dog to be ok with this because their last dog “loved it.”

If your dog doesn’t accept visiting dogs inside your home or doesn’t like going to other people’s houses, this is not a problem on your dog’s end. Your dog is normal. It’s a problem on your end in your realistic vs unrealistic expectations.

Miss Sadie and her wonderful momma graduated our 10 week program! Sadie has big feelings and gets frustrated when she sees other dogs causing her to react.

Over these 10 weeks we have built her confidence, taught her a whole new skill set, and most importantly given her momma confidence to give Sadie direction and handle her properly.

Sadie’s brother will start training soon, so you will be seeing more of this team in the near future 😉!
