Cobalt is boarding with us while his family goes on vaycay. Look how cute he is! šŸ’™

In-Home Boarding is a more personal, less stressful way to have your dog cared for when youā€™re away. They arenā€™t kept in a kennel, surrounded by other dogs who are just as stressed out as they are. Instead, your dog is part of the family when they stay!

Please do not attempt ā€œtestingā€ your dog by touching or petting him/her while they are eating. I just donā€™t understand this philosophy.

There is ZERO to prove in this situation. If you are trying to teach your dog you are the dominant one, your information is incorrect.

Client: ā€œBut Ian, we have small kids in the house, we do this just in case the kids touch the dog while he/she is eatingā€.

Ian: ā€œWhat are you going to do if your dog bites your hand while you are testing him/herā€.

Client: ā€œWe will tell her no and scold her for itā€

Ian: ā€œSo then your dog will have a bad association with eating and will probably start to eat faster. Your dog is disciplining you for reaching into its food. You are creating resource guardingā€.

Client: ā€œWhat can we do thenā€?

Ian: ā€œFeed your dog in the crateā€

Client: ā€œBut our dog isnā€™t crate trainedā€

Ian: ā€œThen crate train your dog. Crate training your dog provides structure, boundaries, and safety while eating for the dog and kids. And itā€™s the cheapest babysitter you will ever pay for. The crate should be the bedroom for your dog.

Never have I seen a show about animals where the parents ā€œtestā€ their young by reaching into their food.

Let a sleeping dog lie.

Let an eating dog eat.

* Bringing this post out of the vault, because itā€™s so important * šŸ‘‡šŸ»

I think itā€™s common to think that when our dog is unruly, there is something wrong with them.Ā

Especially when we look around us and see perfectly behaved pups strolling happily down the street with their owners.Ā

But the truth isā€¦

Everything your dog does is NORMAL.Ā

Chewingā€¦

Diggingā€¦

Barkingā€¦

Pulling on the leadā€¦

Lunging at other dogs or joggersā€¦

Growlingā€¦

Itā€™s all NORMAL.Ā

This isĀ  a normal response for a predator (because thatā€™s what dogs once were) that got plucked out of their natural environment and dropped onto your sofa.Ā

Whatā€™s not normal?Ā

Walking on a leash at a mind numbingly slow pace as you stare at your phoneā€¦

NOT chewing things, or mouthing youā€¦

Holding a sit stay or a down stay as you chat to a friendā€¦

NOT losing their mind around another dog.Ā

Sure selective breeding has curbed some of the more natural responses our dogs haveā€¦

But the truth isā€¦

Your dogā€™s behavior is a NORMAL response to them trying to adapt to an environment that truthfully is NOT normal for them.Ā

So tell meā€¦

What does that shift for you?Ā

Because your dog isnā€™t ā€œBadā€. Thereā€™s nothing wrong with them. Everything they are doing is completely normal.

Miss Ruby is getting the whole ā€œwalk slowlyā€ thing down! Sheā€™s became insensitive to any collar or slip leash pressure on her neck because of her habit of pulling. With the help of the prong, Iā€™ve been able to teach her where Iā€™d like her to be & without force on my end. Our next step will be to fade out the prong & walk on her flat collar.

Khaleesi is on week 3 of her Board & Train, which means itā€™s time to introduce the e-collar in a positive way. This is her first session ā€” can you even tell when the collar is being used? Nope! And thatā€™s how it should be!

Training with e-collars gets a bad reputation due to irresponsible people using the tool. Many owners view e-collar training as a last resort to fix problematic behaviors but the opposite should be true. With a gentle introduction to the stimulation from the collar, using reinforcement, dogs stay happy and thereā€™s no need for harsh corrections!

Oreo has improved so much since his first day. Before, he was nervous, lacked any engagement, and pulled HARD on the leash. Today he was showing off his new skills by offering me a perfect, focused heel. šŸ¤©

Good dog training always involves play. I struggled for days to get Khaleesi to relax enough to engage in play with me. Yesterday I got her to crack! Some dogs love to fetch, some dogs love to tug; Khaleesi loves to be chased! šŸ¤£

It was a perfect morning for tracking with Hex. Sheā€™s connected the dots for a short track, finally moving off of puppy scent pads. Weā€™re learning tracking for IGP/Schutzhund, which has been a goal of mine for over 10 years. Learning this sport is challenging but ultimately helps me understand how dogs learn even more!

Phin is working on his reactivity. Heā€™s been pulling mom around the neighborhood, barking and lunging at other dogs. Weā€™ll get him cool, calm and collected soon! šŸ˜Ž

After months of training and learning how to be a dog, sweet Ace gets a family for Christmas! šŸ„°šŸŽ„

It hasnā€™t been easy fostering him. Ace was nearly feral when he came to me for help. With time, he has learned that people & dogs are safe to interact with. Iā€™m so happy to have been a part of his journey. Seeing his true personality shine has been the biggest reward in all of this.

Keep on being a good boy, buddy! šŸ’ž

And this is why we say, let them sniff on walks!

A fun visual representation of what your dog sees (smells) every day. Look at how noisy it is and how many tracks there are intertwining. The different animals, people, and dogs movement in just one area. The snow lets us humans see the history of this area and what animals and people have passed through. A dog will smell this every day and know who and what animals have passed through. Smellavision!!!!

Dogs are incredible.

Imagine tracking and detection dogs needing to filter out all this noise and track a single scent down. Amazing!

(Note this is a fun representation, not accurate)

Pierre mastered a parallel walk around the neighborhood and ended with play in his own backyard. If you wouldā€™ve asked me and his owners months ago, weā€™d say this was impossible.

Way to go, buddy!! šŸ¤©šŸ„°

Some dogs are never going to be ā€˜daycareā€™ dogs ā€” thatā€™s okay! Some people arenā€™t into parties ā€” thatā€™s okay, too! As dog owners, itā€™s our job to teach our dog (friendly or not) to exist around the presence of other dogs without being rude.

Pierre is a long time student who has been working on his social skills. He might be small, but he has big feelings about strange people and dogs. His owners have worked hard and made good progress with him, but thereā€™s still more to be made!

Today, Pierre socialized (off muzzle) with Atka, Kuma, Vika and Bear. Heā€™s responding to body language from the other dogs as well as corrections from humans. Being able to exist, calmly, in a group of dogs is the first step of proper socialization.

About Sarah

Sarah has been involved with dog training since childhood, where she trained her family dog as a serious hobby. When he passed, she wasn't allowed a new dog but kept her spark alive by volunteering to train the local shelter dogs. She also got some great experience in high school working at a behavior clinic. After 3 years of professional experience as a trainer, she decided to begin her own business here in Tennessee. Her goal is to educate owners and help them communicate effectively with their dogs. She believes that a positive relationship between dog and human involves structure, training and play!

Sarah lives, breaths and sleeps dogs. She has three of her own; Bear, Kuma and Pinot. They also have ā€œKittyā€ who is convinced that he is a dog, too! She enjoys doing a variety of things with them all, including hiking/camping, agility, therapy dog work, disc, and dock diving. Along with her own dogs, Sarah and her family open their home to McMinn Regional Humane Societyā€™s most ā€œin needā€ dogs.
