I am a box turtle. I may seem insignificant to you as you pass me trying to cross the road...but did you know that I will produce 60 eggs in my lifetime and of that 60, if lucky, 2 may survive to adulthood? If left alone and in a healthy environment, I could live for 55 - 60 years! I do not reproduce until I am 12 years old. The odds that my 2 offspring that live will get to reproduce are impacted by traffic, disease that is introduced by humans, and humans taking my offspring in as a pet and releasing them somewhere in which they will spend the rest of their life trying to find their original home. Even 1/4 of a mile from our original home can keep us wandering for the remainder of our life, causing us to get hit on active streets or not looking for a mate to reproduce. I want to be around for many more years so that your grandchildren's grandchildren will have the pleasure of witnessing my curious and gentle nature in the wild as it was meant to be. So please, enjoy me in my natural element and if I need help, consider that you are possibly benefiting your future generations as well as mine!
