CARING FOR ANIMALS SINCE 1927
631.368.8770
Little Shelter Animal Rescue and Adoption Center is a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter nestled on six wooded acres in Huntington, Long Island. Included on the grounds is Sheltervale Pet Cemetery, which has been the final resting place for companion animals for more than 80 years. Suffolk County’s oldest humane organization, Little Shelter has been dedi
cated to saving abandoned dogs and cats and placing them into loving homes since 1927. Age, physical condition, and socialization issues are never criteria for rescuing a dog or cat whose life is in jeopardy. Most of our companion animals have been saved from kill shelters on Long Island, in New York City, and in several southern states. As a member of the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals, Little Shelter is regularly called upon by the city’s municipal shelters to take their dogs and cats in need of rehabilitation. All Little Shelter pets receive the highest quality medical care and are spayed /neutered before adoption. Every potential adopter is interviewed and thoroughly screened to ensure the best quality homes. To extend our mission of finding loving homes for all dogs and cats, Little Shelter has implemented the One Call Saves One Life program. Through this initiative, we ask all animal lovers to make one phone call to encourage one friend or relative to save one animal’s life by adopting a shelter pet and by relaying the adoption message to someone else. With the help of One Call spokesperson Richard Belzer, individuals as well as shelters have spread this lifesaving message. Our FACEBOOK GUIDELINES: We love hearing from our Facebook friends. Please post your photos, questions, comments, news bits and article links so we can all enjoy. However, we do prohibit and reserve the right to remove cross-posting ads for products, services or for non LSAR pets. To keep the page from getting muddled, we remove any posts that ask our readers to vote in contests, sign petitions, 'like my page' or to send money. We also remove posts that have wrong information, severe accusations, or other negative commentary. The page is used to promote LSAR events and our pets and if general conversation is not vital to the page or our supporters we will delete the post. Should you have specific or immediate questions it is best to call our general line as that will be answered more quickly than a Facebook post. Thank you for understanding, and thank you for your support!

Another spectacular senior adoption is in the books. Rory, our 8-year-old Dachshund mix, has officially found his forever home! Rory was surrendered to a local shelter by his previous owners, who could no longer care for him. His prior owners did note a previous spinal injury that hindered his ability to utilize his back legs. However, this did not affect his outlook on life whatsoever. His personality was almost puppy-like; he loved to zoom around, play with squeaky toys, and befriend as many dogs as possible. We knew we had to step in from the second we heard about him. With the abundance of animals in town shelters, it is easy for dogs like Rory to be overlooked. It would be difficult, but we wanted to give Rory his best chance. After months of evaluation, X-rays, and treatment, it was determined he would need someone dedicated and compassionate to continue the extensive care he would require. That perfect person came along just in time. His wonderful adopter instantly fell in love with him and was ready to take on all his medical needs without hesitation. It is not an easy undertaking, and adopters like her allow us to continue to rescue dogs like Rory. He is now happily enjoying his new life with his fantastic adopter and furry siblings, getting all the love and care he needs!

“This Senior Sunday, we want to show some extra attention to our lovable lady, Grandma. Grandma is a terrier mix rescued from a local town shelter. She has unfortunately found herself in the shelter system at the age of 14 but has high hopes of finding her next home soon. She enjoys sunbathing, napping, and hanging out with her fellow shelter seniors. Grandma can change any bad day into a great one with her warm hugs and exceptional cuddles. If you’re interested in adopting Grandma or have additional questions, please call 631-368-8770 ext. 21.”

"We recently celebrated the adoption of one of our special seniors, Scarlett. Scarlett’s journey through the shelter system into her forever home perfectly encaptures the time and dedication that goes into animal rescue. Upon her arrival at Little Shelter, Scarlett was severely emaciated, weighing only 28lbs and she had a few other health issues that needed to be addressed. We also discovered she was deaf! Temperament-wise, she was easy going but had no interest in people, dogs, or toys. We’re not sure what led to Scarlett’s poor condition, but we knew she didn’t receive the care she deserved. After a few months of care, Scarlett was adopted by a family. We thought this was her big break into a new life where she could get the love she desperately deserved. Unfortunately, a few months later, the family had an unexpected change in living situations, resulting in Scarlett’s return to the shelter. Now she was a senior on top of being deaf. As upsetting as it was, her second time around was completely different. She was much more lively, playing with toys, running around with the other dogs, and even enjoying the company of staff and volunteers. You’d never find her in her kennel; she was always out in the village, at events, or helping out in our adoption office. The months flew by, and we enjoyed every second we spent with her until the day finally came. Scarlett had found her family, and it was love at first sight. While it was a bittersweet goodbye, we could not have been happier for her. She is now living the life she truly deserves. Here’s to many more success stories like Scarlett."

Our glamorous one-eyed girl Ginny hopes to find her new home this Senior Sunday. While we don’t know much about Ginny’s backstory, we do know she’s an absolute love bug. She often goes by her nickname, nurse Ginny, as she loves to supervise vet exams and help the other cats feel comfortable during checkups. When she’s not assisting our medical team, you’ll find Ginny putting together her outfit for the day. She loves to dress up in costumes and put on a fashion show for everyone in the cattery. After a long day of work, she enjoys snuggling up with her favorite people and catching up on some much-needed rest. If you’re interested in adopting Ginny or have additional questions, please call 631-368-8770 ext. 36.

This sweet little girl Christina and her family adopted an amazing black-and-white kitten named Bonita (now renamed Millie) from Little Shelter. Spending time at Little Shelter really made an impression on Christina, and she decided that she wanted to do something to help us take care of the cats and dogs who deserve forever homes.
Christina set up a table in front of her house where she sold homemade lemonade, cucumber water, and bracelets and other jewelry. There was an outpouring of support from her community and her family and friends. Christina raised over $450 for the shelter!!!! THANK YOU, CHRISTINA, FOR YOUR KINDNESS AND SUPPORT!!! YOU ARE AWESOME!!!!!
