🐾 Guava – Your New Best Friend! 🐾

Guava is a stunning 4-year-5-month-old, 55-pound yellow lab who is as sweet as she is beautiful. She’s the ultimate love bug, ready to find her forever home and shower her family with affection.

✨ What Guava Loves:
Belly rubs are her absolute favorite!
Playing fetch with tennis balls (she’ll happily chase them for hours).
Sunbathing and soaking up the sunshine.
Being wherever her humans are, whether it’s going for a walk or curling up by your feet during movie night.

✨ Her Personality:
Guava is great with kids and adores playing with other dogs, making her a fantastic family companion. She’s housebroken and well-mannered most of the time, but she can get a little mischievous if left alone for too long (chewing or getting into the trash).

✨ Skills and Training:
Guava knows how to:
Sit
Shake
We’re currently working on “down” and “stay.”

✨ Areas She’s Working On:
Like every dog, Guava has a few things she’s learning to master:
Leash pulling: She gets excited and can pull when walking.
Door manners: She needs to learn not to run out the door or knock people over in her excitement.
Jumping: She’s working on curbing her enthusiasm!

✨ A Note on Separation Anxiety:
Guava does get stressed when left alone, even for short periods, so someone who works from home would be ideal. To help her feel more confident, she was evaluated at Smash K9, and they recommend 8 weeks of obedience training (2x per week). This will help her with both her anxiety and commands. Bonus: New adopters will receive a 10% discount on training if started within 10 days of adoption!

Guava is a beautiful, loving, and energetic girl who just needs the right family to help her continue to grow into the perfect companion. If you’re looking for a loyal, fun-loving pup who will adore you unconditionally, Guava might just be the one for you! ❤️ Let's get this love bug into the home she deserves! 🐶

✨ A Star Adventurer:
Smart and well-trained: Foxx knows all her basic commands.
Great in the car: She’s a perfect passenger on road trips.

Foxx is sweet, loving, and eager to please. She’s a girl who thrives on companionship and craves the love and security of a forever family.

Anyone who knows us knows our passion lies in rescuing dogs—we love our dogs! 🐾 But our love for rescue extends beyond that. We cherish our partnerships with shelters near and far and work tirelessly to help as many as possible, especially our local shelter partners. Our reach, however, goes far beyond the local community, and through the years, we’ve developed wonderful relationships with surrounding shelters, welcoming countless beautiful pups into our care.

This past week, we received an urgent plea from a couple of our rescue partners in Virginia. These shelters were facing heartbreaking decisions, including euthanizing for space. This particular plea hit home in a deeply personal way—it came from shelters where our dear and wonderful friend, Teresa Darlene McDowney, had poured her heart and soul into saving animals.

Teresa served as an Animal Control Officer, Animal Shelter Manager, and Animal Advocate and in every role, her dedication and passion for saving lives were unmatched. Teresa was a force of nature, willing to do whatever it took to rescue even just one dog. Her unexpected passing on February 22, 2024, was a tremendous loss to so many, especially to the animals she cared for so deeply.

This rescue became more than urgent—it became a mission to honor Teresa’s memory. With the incredible generosity of our friends at Prince Frederick Chrysler Jeep Dodge, who lent us a van, and the compassionate efforts of the Virginia shelter staff, we were able to transport nine precious souls to safety. To further honor Teresa, several of these pups have been lovingly named after her:

Meet Teresa and her pups Brulee and Soot, Darlene and her pups Riblet and Kabob, Nathaniel (named after Teresa’s beloved son), Kevin, and Rook.

We know Teresa would have done everything in her power to ensure these dogs made it to safety. This rescue was a tribute to her extraordinary spirit and her legacy of love and compassion for animals. She is deeply missed here on earth, but her memory lives on through every life saved. ❤️

A shelter is no place for two of our sweetest senior pups, KC and Skeeter and they are hoping today is the day they find their forever homes!

At 10 years old, KC is a gentle, laid-back girl who loves nothing more than relaxing by your side and soaking up some belly rubs. She’s the perfect companion for someone looking for a calm and affectionate friend.

Nine-year-old Skeeter, on the other hand, is a bundle of energy and love! He’s incredibly friendly, full of life, and happiest when being picked up and showered with affection. This lovable boy would thrive with someone who can match his enthusiasm and joy.

Let’s help these two wonderful pups find the homes they deserve. They’ve got so much love to give! 🐾💖

Cooler weather is coming be prepared. Straw will reflect body heat back to a cat and actually repels moisture. Straw is tough, thick, dry leftover stalks from crops. It's lightweight and golden in color. Straw has a hollow center which makes for great insulation (just like double pane windows).

Do NOT use hay (OR blankets) for bedding in outdoor cat shelters. Hay is green and heavy. Hay is typically used to feed animals, like horses. It absorbs moisture, making it damp, cold and uncomfortable for cats, and has the potential to get moldy.

You can buy straw bales at your local co-op, farm/ag supply stores, local garden center/nursery, Home Depot, Lowe's, Tractor Supply or Ace Hardware. We’ve even seen bales of straw being sold outside grocery stores along with pumpkins. Farms selling pumpkins often sell bales of straw too.

Remember Straw for Strays

DO NOT BUY CRAFT STORE SMALLER BALES OF STRAW. THESE ARE USUALLY CHEMICALLY TREATED AND COULD HARM ANIMALS!
