It is with a heavy heart that we let Maureen go to a better place, early this morning💔

In her way she told us it was time and it would be unfair to not honor her. We are so very grateful that she found her way back to us and we were able to show her the love and kindness she deserved. Thank you to Dr Deb and staff for everything. Thank you all for your prayers and donations to help us with her journey🐾❤️🐾

9:30am
She is being well taken care of at Pet Vet Animal Clinic and Mobile Practice, Ltd. Dr Deb and team have her on IV and heat support.
Her bloodwork shows that her kidney function is off the charts and her blood glucose is barely registering. The rest looks ok.

To be honest the prognosis is poor but we will give her a shot and most importantly make sure she is warm and loved🐾
Thank you all for your support and prayers for Maureen.
We will post again this afternoon.

Maureen was adopted out in 2012 at the age of 2 so she is 14 now.

A good samaritan found her today, freezing in a garage and brought her to the wonderful folks at West Suburban Humane Society in Downers Grove.

Her original adopter moved out of State and handed her off to someone who eventually handed her off to someone else. No one reported her missing and the last time she was seen was September 2024 by the 2nd owner.

This little girl is lucky to be alive.
If you are a bit squeamish, we apologize. This is what happens to an indoor cat who is left to fend on their own, in winter, with no access to food and water.

We have never seen a cat that has so dramatically lost so much weight. She is a shell of her former self.

She has a long road ahead of her.
We hope the next 48 hours will see some progress🙏🏻

If you would like to join us in helping provide her care would would appreciate it.🐾

Oaken Acres has had calls on a dozen or more sick Canada geese in the past two weeks. Some are dead. Some are dying. Others are symptomatic of avian (bird) flu. ALL ARE INFECTED with AVIAN FLU in our opinion. We have had to euthanize several outside our building and freeze them immediately for cremation. It's very sad but at least 50% of the calls we are getting are about geese that are stumbling around, maybe hit by a car, looks cold and sitting all alone in my yard for hours, unable to fly. Nearly all of these are turning out to be cases of avian flu. This is so sad for all these birds.

Oaken Acres will no longer be accepting geese exhibiting these symptoms for the safety of our inhouse birds and our staff. This disease is transmissable to humans and pets and we just can't afford that risk. Here's an important thing for anyone to remember if they are contemplating rescuing any waterfowl with these symptoms:

People can get avian influenza by: Touching bedding, feed, or water contaminated with waste from infected animals, then touching their eyes, nose, or mouth. Breathing in the virus in contaminated respiratory droplets or dust. Working with or drinking raw milk from infected animals.

You can go to this link for more information:
https://www.cdc.gov/bird-flu/virus-transmission/avian-in-humans.html

Also, we are advising the public to NOT try to capture these sick birds. If there is a dead one in your yard, wear a face mask, put on a pair of rubber gloves, have two large garbage bags at the ready, and using a shovel try to get the goose into the bag. Try doing this without having any contact with the dead bird. It can be disposed of in your garbage. Please read the instructions on the flyer provided by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

If there are large numbers of birds that are dead or dying in an area, please contact your regional office of the Wildlife Biologist for the IDNR. In Northern Illinois, contact Jared Trickey at 815.904.4158.

UPDATE ON BOB
Dr Deb and the great staff at Pet Vet Animal Clinic and Mobile Practice, Ltd got Bob in right away and his new tail looks wonderful and he is not in pain.
Bob will be up for adoption soon!

Thank you all who donated to help Bob and his new tail🐾

Thank you eveyone who has donated on Giving Tuesday, and p**f it is gone🌬️

We just took in this super friendly male cat yesterday, that one of our TNR caretakers had sighted with a degloved tail about a month ago.

He was caught and the dead part of his tail fell off.

We named him Bob and he will get an exam and surgery to finish the amputation as there is exposed bone.

In the meantime we will flyer the mailboxes as there are no postings.

Your donations will help cover the medical costs for Bob.

Thank you sooo much🐾

Just a follow up to show that Ginger does love Lucy🐾

Baby is an 11-year-old cat. She’s super sweet but she’s shy. She was originally part of our TNR program in 2014. She was taken in eventually as a house Cat and her owner is no longer able to care for her as she went into assisted living. She would do best in a quiet household. She loves to eat when you’re sitting with her. You can visit her at the Pet Vet Animal Clinic and Mobile Practice, Ltd Huntley during business hours.
