The high winds have been relentless and as such we have multiple power outages in Walker County. As a reminder, you can report damages you may suffer from this winter event, directly on the app. The information will only go to Walker County Office of Emergency Management and Texas Division of Emergency Management. This information helps us with situational awareness, preparedness and response. The OEM office phone will monitored and answered 24/7 during the freeze/wind event but of course for life threatening incidents, call 911.

Now is the time to prepare! There’s been lots of talk about an Arctic blast coming our way next week.

Our best intel right now is that we could see temps in the lower 20s Monday night, with lows in the teens Tuesday and Wednesday.

While it’s too early to know for sure, we’ve got a few days of nice weather to prepare. Remember the 4 Ps, people, plants, pipes, and pets.

Weather Alert for next week
A strong arctic cold front will move through Southeast Texas Sunday night into Monday morning. Significantly colder arctic air is expected to move into the area behind the front, with temperatures dropping into the low to mid-20s across the Piney Woods and Brazos Valley. South of I-10 and west of I-45, lows will be in the mid-20s to low 30s. The Houston Metro and along the coast lows will be in the mid to upper 30s.

The timing of the coldest temperatures is projected to be overnight Monday into Tuesday morning. Temperatures are expected to plummet into the teens for areas along and north of the I-10 corridor, while the Houston Metro and areas south of I-10 will be in the low 20s. There is an increasing chance of a widespread hard freeze (temperatures equal to or lower than 24F for 2 or more hours) during this timeframe. While lows will be just a touch warmer, there is the potential for a second night of temperatures meeting the criteria for a hard freeze Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

With the increasing concern for well below-freezing temperatures, now is the time to prepare. Plan to bring pets indoors, cover or insulate exposed pipes (including pipes underneath raised homes), bring potted plants indoors and apply a thick layer of mulch around outdoor plants, check on family, and assist elderly family/neighbors who may need help winterizing their home or who need a warm place to stay.

In my years of life, I have learned that when we have completed our time on earth, we will go, no matter the struggle. No one can stop it. We have one life to live. The material things we invest in are left behind. Memories therefore, are important to me. And so, I'm going to start a "reunion of friends". The idea is to see who reads a post without a picture. If no one reads my post, this will be a very short experiment. But if you are reading this message, make a comment using a single word about how we met. After that copy this message on your wall and I will also leave you a word. Please, don't leave a word and then not bother doing the second thing. Let’s go. Friends are important. Those we see and talk to often and those we think of often.
