Level 4 is Level 1 with excellence ;)

I read a theory about why so many riders lack a deep command of basics, and it was explained like this---

Correct basics are hard to master because there is an enormous amount of repetition involved, and if someone has tried something hundreds, possibly thousands of times, and still can’t do it, it is easy for the person to conclude that he/she is taking on an impossible challenge.

In his book “Mastery,” George Leonard wrote that on the quest to become good, there will be long stretches of “seeming non-improvement.”

Like watching grass grow, change is happening, but so slowly that it can’t be measured daily, weekly, or even monthly. But at some point, for those who stick with it, “suddenly” they can do things that before they couldn’t do.

The issue is giving up in frustration before putting in those many many many many months of practice.

That is ONE theory. I am sure there are many others, but this one does ring true.

On the road again! This time on the way to Pagosa to help teach and ride with Pat for the month. Fonz and Broom got to meet some great-nephews and niece of mine. Thankful I have such good travelers with me :)

Ha, I need to work on my picture taking skills!
I’ve been spending time at the Animal Rescue League of Iowa while I’m up here this month. They assigned me to some horses that have been hard to catch or unhandled, a favorite of mine 🙂 We’ve made some progress the first week. The two mares are following me around more and have stopped trying to run through me. I just added the two yearlings who haven’t been haltered and need to be gelded. Fun projects!

Got to spend some time with this little cutie. 🙂 She hadn’t been touched before yesterday and laid down instead of getting off the trailer, so I coached the vet team to help her unload and get into a stall.
The 1st pic was at the start of the session, the second one at the end. She was getting more relaxed with me but was still a bit skeptical.
We played with her being ok with me approaching. I rubbed on her and found a couple itchy spots. Then I started to help her understand how to follow a feel and a suggestion. By the end she understood to come forward instead of turn and run the opposite direction. Good progress for the day!

It was great to be at Road to the Horse and see Tik do a fantastic job with his horse! He stuck to his principles and put the horse first throughout the weekend and it paid off :)

Fun but challenging setup for the obstacles yesterday during the working equitation clinic Fonz and I went to. It helped me see what Fonz and I need to focus on in our foundation. Mainly to help with balance plus energy on the smaller curves and being precise about where our transitions happen. Fun stuff!!

Last day with John Baar today and a full day with no rain, yay! I love how he started out with the idea of changing our story and thoughts we bring with us when we go to play with our horses. Then we’ve been focusing a lot of feel, timing and balance. Plus learning more strategies for when we feel the mental, emotional and physical braces come up in these horses. We’ll see if I can remember to take some pics while riding today, lol

Got back to Huntsville later than expected because I got to spend some sweet moments with these two this morning. So fun to be there for the first moments of a foals life 🥰

A little snippet from the group liberty catch me. This is one of my favorite group exercises because you get to be the source of comfort for your horse without doing any work! All your friends get to help the horse find you :)

Just enjoying the moments with our horses at the end of a Liberty workshop day. We did individual time in the round pen, some catch me, one at a time in a rodeer and ended with everyone at liberty keeping it simple.

My group from the Ride with Robin decided to play around with some drill team maneuvers at the end of the day. Not bad for their first time together, I think there’s some potential there!

Who out there has a horse who isn’t this good for trimming? I got to be a part of another first for Harmony, my little bay mare. 🙂 She was SO great! Untouched less than a week ago to standing with a rope over her back while I used the nippers and rasp to trim her up a bit. There were even people walking about and other horses being played with while I was trimming. My only goal was for her to have a good experience and get used to the tools, I didn’t care if I got all of her done. But she let me do all 4 feet! THIS is why I love the Parelli program so much! It teaches you horse behavior and psychology and helps you learn better feel and timing so you can set these horses up to be partners for all interactions.

When you just need a quick Lola break while giving a horse a moment to process 🙂
