It’s National Dress Up Your Pet Day! How long does your pet actually keep their costume on? If it’s only a few seconds, that still counts!

Just be sure any pet clothing or costumes fit well and don’t limit your pet’s movement or breathing.

❄️🐾 Winter Pet Care Tips 🐾❄️

As the cold weather settles in, it's important to remember that our furry friends need extra attention to stay safe and comfortable. Here are some key tips for keeping your pets happy and healthy throughout the winter months:

1. Clean Up Anti-Freeze Spills: Anti-freeze is toxic to pets! Be sure to clean up any spills promptly, especially if you're using it in your vehicle or driveway. Pets might be attracted to its sweet smell, but it can be deadly.
2. Dog House Requirements: If your pet must stay outdoors, make sure their dog house meets local regulations. According to city ordinances (Ordinance 18-952, 5-6, Number 9, Letter A, C), a proper dog house should have four sides, a roof, and a floor to provide shelter. And importantly, it should maintain temperatures above 40°F. Don't let your pet suffer in the cold!
3. Straw Over Hay: If your pet spends time outdoors, use straw in their shelter instead of hay. Straw provides better insulation, while hay can retain moisture and become uncomfortable or even harmful in cold weather.
4. Bring Pets Inside: Even if it's just for a short while, try to bring your pets inside during extreme cold spells. A warm spot in the house can make a world of difference, especially on those freezing nights.
5. Know the Signs of Hypothermia: Pets, especially smaller or short-haired breeds, can suffer from hypothermia. Watch for signs such as:
• Shivering or shaking
• Lethargy or weakness
• Slow or irregular breathing
• Stiff muscles or joints
• Pale or discolored gums If you notice any of these symptoms, seek veterinary care immediately.
6. Extra Food and Water: Pets burn extra calories trying to stay warm in winter, so give them a little extra food. Don't forget to provide fresh, unfrozen water at all times. Hydration is just as important in the winter as it is in the summer!
7. Shorter Outside Trips: Keep outdoor walks and playtime short and sweet. Be mindful of how long your pets are exposed to the cold. Quick potty breaks are better than long strolls!
8. Pet Clothes: For smaller or short-haired dogs, consider investing in a cozy sweater or coat to help them stay warm while outside. If your pet tolerates it, booties can also protect their paws from salt and ice.
9. Monitor Older Pets: Senior pets and those with health conditions may be more vulnerable to the cold. Keep them indoors and warm, and consult your vet for additional care recommendations.

Stay warm, and take good care of your four-legged friends this winter! 🐶🐱❤️
