One of our patients before and 4 weeks after a bilateral, single session TPLO surgery.
TPLO surgery is the most common surgery we do at NAVO. We use this procedure to treat cruciate ligament disease for several reasons:
It works amazingly well. The joint is immediately stabilized once the rotation is performed. Your dog goes to sleep with an unstable knee and wakes up with a stable knee.
It is probably one of the least painful procedures to address cruciate ligament disease. The bone is cut under surgical anesthesia. It is then plated with 6 robust screws and a plate. The cut bone is not painful because the two pieces of bone are compressed together tightly, producing a very stable construct. Many of our patients are bearing weight on the operated knee the next day.
There is little risk of this repair breaking down. Conventional lateral suture procedures rely on a piece of suture material to imitate the ligament. These sutures almost always end up breaking over the course of a large dog/ very active dog's life. The TPLO is different- once the bone has fused, it will remain in that position forever.
If you have a limping/ painful dog, please dont hesitate to call us. We will take care of you!
