While this isn’t a dog related post, this is a post that relates to adversity and resilience.
One year ago, the future looked bright for me. I was doing well in Vet Tech school, dog training business was going well, and I was enjoying building everything around me. However, life had different plans. I had the first of two strokes one year ago. These strokes were not diagnosed at first. I was left disabled and unable to walk, write, and safely be independent.
Over the next year, I would find the strength to overcome the adversity the universe put in my life. It took over 9 months of physical therapy, but with the help and encouragement of clients who have become friends, long time friends, family, my dogs, and my business it has been a tough road, but I feel more and more normal each day.

I frequently get asked when can I stop rewarding a recall. The answer is NEVER! Kiely actually came to me first before I started videoing, which is why she was rewarded second here! They both came from almost 100 yards away while out on our hike too. Good puppies!!!!
This is what a well socialized dog looks like! Notice Armada is off-leash and has neutral body language. He is paying attention to what is around him, but he’s not actively going up to Campbell (the cat) or investigating her. This is how Armada is around every animal and person he’s around. In fact, I would often have to say “Go say Hi” on therapy visits for him to leave my side.
Yes, I realize Armada is an old dog and he is well trained, but he’s only had a cat for about 3 years and one has only lived at our house for a year.
For some dogs this can take some time and training for a dog to not care about other dogs, people, or animals. For other dogs it can come more naturally. For Armada it was more natural. For my youngest dog, Kiely, she thinks EVERYBODY, is her best friend!

I had some time between private lessons today, so I thought I’d play with Wonton some. She batted the hand food was in, so I opened my hand and lowered it for her and this happened.
She still won’t let me touch her though, but I’m also being respectful and not tricking her into me touching her. She’s a great cat and she’s working on her recall now too.

As many of you know, I have a feral cat who is our “rodent control manager.” It’s a very important job!
Anyway, since she’s staying in for the winter and a little more bold than I was hoping she’d be…we’re working on crate training. She already goes into her crate to get her meals (she’s always fed in her crate), but I thought putting it on cue might be more helpful.
Tonight was our first actual training session on putting “go to bed” on cue. I think she did a pretty good job!

I am so proud of this team! Sadie was referred to me by her veterinarian for some Canine Fitness work. Sadie’s pasterns are showing some signs of collapse due to osteoarthritis and being overweight. We’re working on strengthening her pasterns, decreasing body fat, and increasing core strength!
Sadie has already lost over a pound and her pasterns are looking stronger (more straight). She’s also brighter and more active! She even ran to me when I was getting equipment out. Just a little bit of low impact work, and we’re seeing HUGE results in just 3 weeks.
The goal for this exercise was to build confidence on “strange” surfaces and add some weight shifting by having Sadie purposefully walk up onto a slightly raised surface and then back down. She rocked it!!!

Colin came in recently for some canine fitness work. He finished up this lesson with a little Body Awareness obstacle course. This was his first time doing anything like this. As you can see, he has a couple of foot placement wobbles, but with more work he’ll get stronger and more precise!
