If you’ve been in for a visit this past week you may have seen a couple new faces.

We’re currently hosting two veterinary students from Mississippi State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine for their clinical externships.

Kate (right) is a 4th year student and will be graduating in May. She has accepted a position with a non-profit clinic outside of Denver. She will be focusing her work on exotics and emergency surgery.

Sophia (left) is a 3rd year student and completing her first externship with us. She has interests in general practice small animal medicine

Externships provide hands-on, in-depth clinical experience under the guidance of a licensed veterinarian inspected and approved by the University. Dr. Sette and Jennifer have been a part of the staff at MSU for 4 years and helped develop their externship program.

On the twelfth day of Christmas a client brought from us twelve doses of Nexgard Plus

We recommend pets be on flea, tick, AND heartworm prevention year-round. Unfortunately, it's not getting cold enough to kill off the fleas and ticks in the winter. These pesky parasites have figured out they can move indoors to survive. Even if it gets cold enough to kill the adult flea the flea egg can survive below freezing temperatures. Ticks seek shelter in nature rather than dying off and will re-emerge as soon as the weather warms up even the slightest bit. In addition to Lyme disease, a variety of other tick-transmitted diseases and infections could harm your pet. So we encourage annual heartworm tests that check for these as well.

The unpredictability of weather patterns and fluctuating temps create an ideal condition for mosquitos to breed and ultimately bite animals. Heartworms mature and live in the heart and an infection impacts blood flow and internal organ functions resulting in death. An estimated 300,000 dogs become infected annually with cases reported in all 50 states.

Some parasite preventions like Nexgard Plus come in a chew that is given monthly to prevent all three types as well as a variety of intestinal parasites. Skipping doses intentionally during winter months will get you out of the habit and make it more likely that your pet goes unprotected for far too long.

We can help you determine the best type of preventive for your pet. And if you have any questions about preventive care, please ask.

On the eleventh day of Christmas a client brought to me eleven collies limping!

Limping is one of those concerns that we don't want to "wait and see" if it will resolve. Limping can be a symptom of a variety of problems from a paw pad injury to osteoarthritis to a CCL tear. One of the vet will need to do a physical exam in order to evaluate the injury properly. Sometimes that means we will need to do additional diagnostics like x-rays or bloodwork.

Once we have a diagnosis we can set up a treatment plan that may include acupuncture and/or therapeutic laser alongside traditional pain management

On the tenth day of Christmas a client brought to me 10 metal screws

This one year-old cat came to us after being hit by a car. Both rear legs were injured. Her right leg only had soft tissue injuries and a couple dislocated digits. However, her left tibia was fractured. Dr. Sette removed any loose bone fragments and then placed a metal plate with screws over the reset fracture.

After recovery, she stayed with us for a couple days to monitor the healing and make sure her pain was being well controlled. She'll return in 2 weeks for a progress exam that will allow Dr. Sette to evaluate how well she is healing

On the ninth day of Christmas Alison held for a nine teeth floating.

Horses have between 36-44 teeth that need floated annually. Dr. Miller is available to do these at any time, but recommends having it done during your annual visit along with deworming, vaccines, and coggins.

On the eighth day of Christmas Dr. William saw eight labs vomiting.

Labrador Retrievers are notorious for eating things they shouldn't. This can lead to a variety of problems. We recommend keeping the Pet Poison Helpline's phone number (855-886-7965 or 844-492-9842) on your fridge so you can call and find out if the ingested item is toxic. They will also give you directions for treatment with us or an emergency vet. So write down that case number!

Be sure to call us if your pet's vomiting is accompanied with diarrhea or anorexia. We may be dealing with more than just a few too many dog biscuits. Please be sure to tell the receptionist when you call if they could have eaten any non-pet food item, fabric, plant, or human medication (prescribed, medicinal, or OTC).
